How Schools Matter: The Link Between Teacher Classroom Practices And Student Academic Performance, Harold Wenglinsky Feb 2002

How Schools Matter: The Link Between Teacher Classroom Practices And Student Academic Performance, Harold Wenglinsky

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

… The current study explores the link between classroom practices and student academic performance by applying multilevel modeling to the 1996 National Assessment of Educational Progress in mathematics. The study finds that the effects of classroom practices, when added to those of other teacher characteristics, are comparable in size to those of student background, suggesting that teachers can contribute as much to student learning as the students themselves.

Improvement In Quantity And Quality Of Prevention Measurement Of Toddler Injuries And Parental Interventions, Lizette Peterson, David Dilillo, Terri Lewis, Kenneth Sher Feb 2002

Improvement In Quantity And Quality Of Prevention Measurement Of Toddler Injuries And Parental Interventions, Lizette Peterson, David Dilillo, Terri Lewis, Kenneth Sher

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Injury is the leading killer of children in the United States, yet little research has focused on this vital subject. One of the distinct barriers to injury prevention is the absence of effective assessment devices. Epidemiological aspects of injury have been assessed, but these provide little information at a level sufficient to allow conclusions about potential behavioral prevention methods. This paper describes an alternative, the Participant Event Monitoring (PEM) system. In this paper, the PEM system is used to examine a sample of 170 toddlers (ages 18 to 36 months), over a 6-month period, resulting in data on over 4,200 …

Elementary History Education And Children's Perceptions Of Time, Christine M. Mccreedy Feb 2002

Elementary History Education And Children's Perceptions Of Time, Christine M. Mccreedy

Honors Theses

When I was in upper elementary school, social studies, history in particular, was often nothing more than reading a text to imprint for a short period of time the "facts" of history. I read books through most of the instruction. I read so many wonderful works of historical fiction, the Holocaust and the Civil War being among the most interesting subjects. Through excellent and not-so-good works of historical fiction, I saw history unfolding in the present, not just the past. The characters gave faces, stories, and meaning to the text we used in class. I grew up with a strong …

The Designed And Achieved Sample Of The 1998 Lsay Sample Technical Paper No. 16, Michael Long, Nicole Fleming Feb 2002

The Designed And Achieved Sample Of The 1998 Lsay Sample Technical Paper No. 16, Michael Long, Nicole Fleming

LSAY Technical Reports

The design was intended to provide a national stratified sample of Year 9 students which would permit a sample of some 10,000 young people to be interviewed by phone in late 2000. The major stratum considered in the design was State of schooling. Students from smaller states were to be over-sampled and, correspondingly, students from larger states were under-sampled. However, in the 1998 sample, the over-sampling of the smaller states and the territories was undertaken at a lower rate than for the 1995 sample. There were two reasons for this: 1. Continued over-sampling of schools in the smaller states would …

Leaf Size, Specific Leaf Area And Microhabitat Distribution Of Chaparral Woody Plants: Contrasting Patterns In Species Level And Community Level Analyses, D. D. Ackerly, Charles A. Knight, S. B. Weiss, K. Barton, K. P. Starmer Feb 2002

Leaf Size, Specific Leaf Area And Microhabitat Distribution Of Chaparral Woody Plants: Contrasting Patterns In Species Level And Community Level Analyses, D. D. Ackerly, Charles A. Knight, S. B. Weiss, K. Barton, K. P. Starmer

Biological Sciences

We examined variation in leaf size and specific leaf area (SLA) in relation to the distribution of 22 chaparral shrub species on small-scale gradients of aspect and elevation. Potential incident solar radiation (insolation) was estimated from a geographic information system to quantify microclimate affinities of these species across north- and south-facing slopes. At the community level, leaf size and SLA both declined with increasing insolation, based on average trait values for the species found in plots along the gradient. However, leaf size and SLA were not significantly correlated across species, suggesting that these two traits are decoupled and associated with …

Bars, Brawls, And Blocks: An Examination Of The Associations Between The Locations Of Liquor-Serving Establishments And Felonious Assaults, Rebecca K. Murray Feb 2002

Bars, Brawls, And Blocks: An Examination Of The Associations Between The Locations Of Liquor-Serving Establishments And Felonious Assaults, Rebecca K. Murray

Student Work

Research on the effects of liquor and liquor-serving establishments as they relate to crime is substantial, although conclusions on the type or size of effects have recently varied considerably. This research attempts to distinguish between particular types of liquor-serving establishments and isolate their effects on felonious assaults, with particular attention to the effects of bars or taverns as separate from both offsite liquor-selling establishments and other onsite establishments such as restaurants. Additionally, this research attempts to determine if dispersion or diffusion effects exist for bars. Findings show that there is a marked difference among the effects of the three types …

Education And Policy In The New Latino Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Stanton Wortham, Enrique G. Murillo Jr. Feb 2002

Education And Policy In The New Latino Diaspora, Edmund T. Hamann, Stanton Wortham, Enrique G. Murillo Jr.

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Increasing numbers of Latinos (many immigrant, and some from elsewhere in the United States) are settling both temporarily and permanently in areas of the United States that have not traditionally been home to Latinos-for example, North Carolina, Maine, Georgia, Indiana, Arkansas, rural Illinois, and near resort communities in Colorado.' Enrique Murillo and Sofia Villenas have called this the New Latino Diaspora (Murillo and Vienas, 1997). Newcomer Latinos are confronted with novel challenges to their senses of identity, status, and community. Instead of arriving in settings, like the Southwest, where Latinos have lived for centuries, those in the New Latino Diaspora …
