Double Median Ranked Set Sample: Comparing To Other Double Ranked Samples For Mean And Ratio Estimators, Hani M. Samawi, Eman M. Tawalbeh Nov 2002

Double Median Ranked Set Sample: Comparing To Other Double Ranked Samples For Mean And Ratio Estimators, Hani M. Samawi, Eman M. Tawalbeh

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Double median ranked set sample (DMRSS) and its properties for estimating the population mean, when the underlying distribution is assumed to be symmetric about its mean, are introduced. Also, the performance of DMRSS with respect to other ranked set samples and double ranked set samples, for estimating the population mean and ratio, is considered. Real data that consist of heights and diameters of 399 trees are used to illustrate the procedure. The analysis and simulation indicate that using DMRSS for estimating the population mean is more efficient than using the other ranked samples and double ranked samples schemes except in …

Habitat Structure And Alarm Call Dialects In Gunnison's Prairie Dog (Cynomys Gunnisoni), Bianca S. Perla, C. N. Slobodchikoff Nov 2002

Habitat Structure And Alarm Call Dialects In Gunnison's Prairie Dog (Cynomys Gunnisoni), Bianca S. Perla, C. N. Slobodchikoff

Habitat Assessment and Management Collection

We examined the relationship between habitat structure and alarm call characteristics in six colonies of Gunnison’s prairie dogs (Cynomys gunnisoni) near Flagstaff, Arizona, before and after a mid-summer vegetation change. We found significant differences in alarm call characteristics between colonies, confirming the existence of alarm call dialects. Differences in frequency components but not temporal components of calls were associated with differences in habitat structure. Playback experiments revealed that differences in alarm call structure affected acoustic transmission of calls through the local habitat. Thus, we identify habitat structure as one factor that may contribute to alarm call differences between colonies of …

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

More must be done to understand how academic researchers involved in agricultural biotechnology are impacted by a growing number of relationships with industry partners, concluded a new report released today by the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology (the Pew Initiative) and Portland State University. The report, University-Industry Relationships: Framing the Issues for Academic Research in Agricultural Biotechnology looks at the advantages and disadvantages to universities and academic scientists who engage in relationships with industry. It specifically outlines the need for information regarding influences on academic scientists' research agendas, the intellectual property rights and technology innovations involved in the relationships, …

Performance Zoning: Shaping Land Development Patterns Today, John R. Nolon Oct 2002

Performance Zoning: Shaping Land Development Patterns Today, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Over thirty years ago The United States Court of Appeals upheld municipal efforts to control growth in the case Golden v. Ramapo. Since then, municipalities have come up with novel tools to harness development into sustainable patterns while mitigating damaging effects of sprawl. This article focuses on the renaissance of one popular land use device, performance zoning, and how the Town of Hyde Park uses this tool to promote growth in community centers and protect undeveloped areas.
