Social Capital, Structural Conditions, And Mortality: A Study Of Nonmetropolitan Counties In Mississippi, Domenico Parisi, Steven Michael Grice, Michael Taquino, Duane A. Gill

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

In this study, we examine the extent to which structural conditions that favor investment in social capital affect mortality across nonmetro counties in Mississippi. To this end, we focus on four county structural conditions: (1) place of residence within county boundaries, (2) civic infrastructure, (3) economic conditions, and (4) county regional location. The results clearly indicate that structural conditions that favor investment in social capital lead to lower mortality. Specifically, concentration of disadvantage conditions has an independent effect on mortality. That is, its effect operates independentIy of other structural conditions. Effect Of Cement Production On Vegetation In A Part Of Southwestern Nigeria, A. T. Salami, A. I. Farounbi, J. I. Muoghalu

Tanzania Journal of Science

The impact of cement dust emissions from the factory of West African Portland Cement at Ewekoro in Southwestern Nigeria on the surrounding vegetation was investigated. Sample plots of 20 m x 20 m were established at 1 km intervals from the factory site up to a distance of 10 km intervals from the factory site up to a distance of 10 km in the four cardinal directions. Leaves of common species were randomly selected for chlorophyll content analysis, leaf abundance and leaf area measurement. Smart Growth: Intermunicipal Innovation In Orange County, John R. Nolon

This article tells the story of the town of Warwick, a rapidly developing town in Orange County, New York, made up of three separate villages. Warwick’s proactive measures to prevent the sprawl development phenomenon through the use of an intermunicipal compact was met with much opposition by the three individual village governments, as well as individual citizens. Through the use of mediation, a popular alternative resolution dispute method, representatives from the villages negotiated an intermunicpal plan that satisfied the needs all three villages, while still meeting the original objectives of preserving open space, scenic views, and agricultural lands.

In numerical mathematics, one of the most frequently used ways of gauging the quality of different numerical methods is benchmarking. Specifically, once we have methods that work well on some (but not all) problems from a given problem class, we find the problem that is the toughest for the existing methods. This problem becomes a benchmark for gauging how well different methods solve problems that previous methods could not. Once we have a method that works well in solving this benchmark problem, we repeat the process again -- by selecting, as a new benchmark, a problem that is the toughest …

Characterization Of Metallothionein Expression In Response To Cadmium In The 267-B1, Normal Prostate Cell Line, Madhuri G. Neriyanuri

The objective of the study was to characterize the mRNA and protein expression of the MT gene in response to Cd2+ exposure in the 267-B1 immortalized normal human neonatal prostate cell line. The cells were exposed to 18muM Cd2+ for 4hr and rescued for 48hr in P4-8F normal medium. Samples were obtained at 0, 1, 2, 4hr exposure and 4, 8, 12, 16, 24, 36, and 48hr recovery. Basal levels of mRNA for MT-1E, MT-1X, and MT-2A genes in 267-B1 cells were similar to the expression of the G3PDH where as MT-3 had a low basal level expression. Exposure to …

Historical Changes In Mid-Water Stands Of Common Reed In The Winnebago Pool Lakes, Wisconsin, Anthony O. Gabriel, Leo R. Bodensteiner

Despite the tolerance of common reed grass to environmental extremes, mid-water stands in the Winnebago pool lakes of central Wisconsin appear to be diminishing. Formerly occupying shoreline locations, water level manipulations subsequent to dam construction beginning in the 1850's have isolated reed stands off shore. These stands have persisted but casual observations indicate that stand size has been declining. To address this perception we obtained an approximately decadal series of aerial photographs dating back to 1937 for four stands in Lake Poygan. Annual records were available for 1986–94. Using image analysis software, we determined shape and size metrics. Changes in …

The main objective of this dissertation is to estimate the mean /x and standard deviation cr of a normal population from left-censored samples. We have developed new methods for calculating estimates for the mean and standard deviation of a normal population from left-censored samples. Some of these methods based on traditional estimating procedures. A new method of obtaining the Cohen maximum likelihood estimates for fx and cr without the aid of an auxiliary table will be introduced. Population declines of many Neotropical migrant bird species (NTMs) in parts or all of their North American breeding ranges have prompted concern regarding the conservation of these species. Many NTMs have specific habitat requirements and are thus negatively affected by habitat alteration. In eastern North America, habitats have changed significantly since European settlement and those changes have had different impacts on different suites of breeding birds. Forest birds are frequently identified as species particularly sensitive to habitat changes though, more recently,marked declines of shrubland or early successional songbirds have raised concern.
