Cognition And The Language Of Learning In South Africa: A Grade 10 Economics Perspective, Gawie Schlebusch

The Qualitative Report

In South Africa an increasing number of learners are taught through the medium of English. Limited English proficiency (LEP) learners who enter classes where English is the language of learning, encounter serious problems in coping with their academic work. These learners have usually acquired informal, colloquial language or Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS), but lack Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). The primary aim of this article is to explore the language dilemma which Grade ten LEP learners' experience. From these findings, recommendations are made concerning ways in which educators can support English language acquisition in the context of the learning …

Communication, Culture And Community: Towards A Cultural Analysis Of Community Media, Kevin Howley Sep 2002

Communication, Culture And Community: Towards A Cultural Analysis Of Community Media, Kevin Howley

The Qualitative Report

This paper promotes a research agenda committed to a sustained, multiperspectival cultural analysis of community-based media. In doing so, the essay takes up two interrelated arguments. First, it is suggested that community media represent a conspicuous blind spot in cultural approaches to communication studies: a situation that is at odds with the hallmarks of cultural studies scholarship, especially its affirmation of popular forms of resistance and its celebration of and keen appreciation for local cultural production. Second, the author maintains that as a site of intense struggle over cultural production, distribution, and consumption within and through communication and information technologies, …

Report On The Situation Of Refugees In Yemen: Findings Of A One-Month Exploratory Study, Nesya H. B. Hughes Sep 2002

Report On The Situation Of Refugees In Yemen: Findings Of A One-Month Exploratory Study, Nesya H. B. Hughes

Faculty Journal Articles

The refugee situation in Yemen is of interest to academics and field professionals working on migration in the Arab world for a host of reasons. Yemen has the Arabian Peninsula’s largest non-Palestinian refugee population . Yet, despite the apparent magnitude of the refugee population in Yemen, little field research has been conducted on this country and its refugee situation. In addition, the Republic of Yemen is the first and only country in the Arabian Peninsula to have signed the 1951 Convention and its 1967 Protocol. Regardless, Yemen is hindered from fulfilling its international obligations because it is simultaneously one of …

Social Entrepreneurship In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan, Teck Meng Tan Sep 2002

Social Entrepreneurship In Singapore, Wee Liang Tan, Teck Meng Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Social entrepreneurship is a new phenomenon in Singapore. Unlike the US, where there are entrepreneurship programs offered at various ACCSB accredited universities such programs do not as yet exist in Asia. The motivations for social entrepreneurship in Asia differ from those in developed countries. While as social entrepreneurship often stem from the social agenda of successful entrepreneurs who are motivated to repay society, the recent trend of social entrepreneurship in Asia may stem from initiatives directed at political liberalisation and the development of civil society on the part of existing governments. The Singapore government in 1997 introduced a series of …

An Environment For Mobile Context-Based Hypermedia Retrieval, James Carswell Sep 2002

An Environment For Mobile Context-Based Hypermedia Retrieval, James Carswell

Conference papers

This paper proposes a novel solution to querying hyperlinked multimedia cultural heritage datasets based on the user's context. Context in this sense is defined as the user's location in virtual space and the particular mobile device being modeled together with user preferences or profile. The purpose is to automatically push relevant data from the database server to the client based on this comprehensive definition of the user's context. Consideration in regard to which mobile device is currently being modeled is a primary filter for determining what data will be sent and in what format. For example, image data will not …

Teacher Persistence: A Crucial Disposition, With Implications For Teacher Education, Karl F. Wheatley Sep 2002

Teacher Persistence: A Crucial Disposition, With Implications For Teacher Education, Karl F. Wheatley

Essays in Education

Teacher persistence helps foster effective teaching. Specifically, teacher persistence may promote high expectations for students, the development of teaching skills, teachers’ reflectiveness, responsiveness to diversity, teaching efficacy, effective responses to setbacks, and successful use of reformed teaching methods. Common evaluation practices in teacher education may undermine teacher persistence. Teacher educators might support the development of teacher persistence by emphasizing the knowledge that makes persistence a rational response to setbacks, by teaching self-regulation skills that support persistence, and by using evaluation practices that require greater effort and persistence of students. The importance of fostering thoughtful teacher persistence is discussed, along with …

Two-Dimensional Ds/Cft Correspondence, Mariano Cadoni, P. Carta, Marco Cavaglia, S. Mignemi Sep 2002

Two-Dimensional Ds/Cft Correspondence, Mariano Cadoni, P. Carta, Marco Cavaglia, S. Mignemi

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate de Sitter/conformal field theory (dS/CFT) correspondence in two dimensions. We define the conserved mass of de Sitter spacetime and formulate the correspondence along the lines of the anti–de Sitter/conformal field theory duality. The asymptotic symmetry group, mass, and central charge of de Sitter spacetime are equal to those of anti–de Sitter spacetime. The entropy of two-dimensional de Sitter spacetime is evaluated by applying the Cardy formula. We calculate the boundary correlators induced by the propagation of the dilaton in two-dimensional de Sitter space. Although the dilaton is a tachyonic perturbation in the bulk, boundary conformal correlators have a …

The General Dominance Of Lottery Over Waiting-Line Auction, Winston T. H. Koh, Zhenlin Yang, Lijing Zhu Sep 2002

The General Dominance Of Lottery Over Waiting-Line Auction, Winston T. H. Koh, Zhenlin Yang, Lijing Zhu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper examines the allocative efficiency of two popular non-price allocation mechanisms — the lottery (random allocation) and the waiting-line auction (queue system) — for the cases where consumers possess identical time costs (the homogeneous case), and where time costs are correlated with time valuations (the heterogeneous case). We show that the relative efficiency of the two mechanisms depends critically on the scarcity factor (measured by the ratio of the number of objects available for allocation over the number of participants) and on the shape of the distribution of valuations. We obtain a set of analytical results showing that the …

Requirements of a business system are established based on the needs and expectations of the business computer user. Linux distributions were selected and tested against these requirements. If a distribution passes the requirements …

Seeking Salvation For Accountability, Melvin J. Dubnick Sep 2002

Seeking Salvation For Accountability, Melvin J. Dubnick

Faculty Publications

This is a paper in defense of a concept that is threatened by its popularity and undermined by those who use it most. It is a call for a reexamination and reaffirmation of “accountability” from the perspective of its central role in modern governance. It is a plea for saving the concept of accountability from the abuses it suffers in the hands of friends and advocates. It is an effort at salvation for a concept that has lost its meaningful “soul” in a world filled with rhetoricians, reformers, and functionalists – all well intentioned, but each contributing to accountability’s fall …

Four-Terminal Quantum Resistor Network For Electron-Wave Computing, Diwakar Ramamurthy, Cheng-Hsiao Wu Sep 2002

Four-Terminal Quantum Resistor Network For Electron-Wave Computing, Diwakar Ramamurthy, Cheng-Hsiao Wu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interconnected ultrathin conducting wires or, equivalently, interconnected quasi-one-dimensional electron waveguides, which form a quantum resistor network, are presented here in four-terminal configurations. The transmission behaviors through such four-terminal networks are evaluated and classified. In addition, we show that such networks can be used as the basic building blocks for a possible massive wave computing machine in the future. In a network, each interconnection, a node point, is an elastic scatterer that routes the electron wave. Routing and rerouting of electron waves in a network is described in the framework of quantum transport from Landauer-Buttiker theory in the presence of multiple …

Composite Structures Using Asphalt Based Roofing Scrap Materials: Eiera -- Final Report, V. J. Flanigan, K. Chandrashekhara, Susan L. Murray

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The uses of recycled materials in composites provide the potential for large cost savings and a solution to the ever-growing disposal problem. Shingles contain petroleum based binders and fillers, which used as a valuable resource in composite production. Composites offer inherent advantages over traditional materials in regard to corrosion resistance, design flexibility and extended service life. Use of scrap-roofing shingles as a core material in glass fiber reinforced composite materials offer potential low cost composite products such as sound barrier system, railroad ties and other building materials including blocks. In the present work, processes have been developed for shredding scrap …

A Label-Switching Packet Forwarding Architecture For Multi-Hop Wireless Lans, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal Sep 2002

A Label-Switching Packet Forwarding Architecture For Multi-Hop Wireless Lans, Arup Acharya, Archan Misra, Sorav Bansal

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A router in wired network typically requires multiple network interfaces to act as a router or a forwarding node. In an ad-hoc multi-hop wireless network on the other hand, any node with a wireless network interface card can operate as a router or a forwarding node, since it can receive a packet from a neighboring node, do a route lookup based on the packet's destination IP address, and then transmit the packet to another neighboring node using the same wireless interface. This paper investigates a combined medium access and next-hop address lookup based on fixed length labels (instead of IP …

Cryptanalysis Of Some Hash Functions Based On Block Ciphers And Codes, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert Huijie Deng Sep 2002

Cryptanalysis Of Some Hash Functions Based On Block Ciphers And Codes, Hongjun Wu, Feng Bao, Robert Huijie Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

At PKC 2000, Inoue and Sakurai proposed some methods to design hash functions from block ciphers and codes (block codes and convolutional codes). They claimed that their hash functions are secure: 2(d-1)m/2 encryptions are necessary to find a collision, where d and m are the minimal distance of the code and the block size of block cipher, respectively. However, we show in this paper that a collision could be found with about a.2m encryptions, where a is a small number.
