Activity Patterns And Correlates Among Youth: Differences By Weight Status, Wendell C. Taylor, James F. Sallis, Marsha Dowda, Patty S. Freedson, Karen Eason, Russell R. Pate Nov 2002

Activity Patterns And Correlates Among Youth: Differences By Weight Status, Wendell C. Taylor, James F. Sallis, Marsha Dowda, Patty S. Freedson, Karen Eason, Russell R. Pate

Faculty Publications

The purposes of the study were to assess differences in physical activity levels and correlates of physical activity among overweight (‡ 85th percentile of body mass index for their sex and age) and non-overweight (< 85th percentile) youth. The sample included 509 seventh through twelfth graders. Activity was measured by a 7-day, 46-item activity checklist. Overweight girls were more sedentary than non-overweight girls (p<.03), and non-overweight girls engaged in more vigorous physical activity than overweight girls (p<.03). For boys, there were no significant differences in activity. The regression analyses for vigorous activity yielded the largest total R2's (R2=.049 for overweight and R2=.27 for non-overweight.) The significant factor for overweight youth was greater athletic coordination (p<.01). For non-overweight youth, the significant factors were greater family support (p<.05), greater peer support (p<.001), fewer barriers (p<.03), and greater athletic coordination (p<.01). Correlates of physical activity vary by weight status of young people.

Guidelines For The Management Of Microbial Food Safety In Fruit Packing Houses, Tony Portman, Elizabeth Frankish, Graham Mcalpine

Bulletins 4000 -

The fresh produce industry has undergone significant change in recent years in the application of quality assurance to business operations. The quality assurance schemes implemented such as the SQFCM programs, have generally served to provide a focus on food quality and operational issues, as well as food safety. Improvements of all aspects of the operations are identified to provide consistent quality, safe produce.

The Design And Evaluation Of Interactivities In A Digital Library, Muniram Budhu, Anita Coleman Nov 2002

The Design And Evaluation Of Interactivities In A Digital Library, Muniram Budhu, Anita Coleman

Faculty Publications

The US National Science Foundation has established a program to create a National Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Education Digital Library (NSDL). One of the subsidiary NSDL libraries under development is the National Civil Engineering Educational Resources Library (NCERL). The first phase of NCERL is the creation and collection of digital resources in three areas of civil engineering—geotechnical (soil), rock, and water engineering (GROW). The concept of interactivities guides the design, development, and evaluation efforts of the GROW digital collection. This article describes the salient features of GROW, defines and discusses interactivities as an emerging, integral part of teaching and …

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2002

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …

A Theoretical Framework For The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo, Timothy Singer Nov 2002

A Theoretical Framework For The Multicast Address Allocation Problem, Daniel Zappala, Chris Gauthierdickey, Virginia Lo, Timothy Singer

Faculty Publications

The multicast address allocation problem requires Internet domains to allocate unique addresses to multicast applications from a globally-shared space. We develop a theoretical framework for multicast allocation algorithms that is influenced by subcube allocation in hypercube computer systems. Based on this framework we derive complexity results for the address allocation problem and describe several new allocation algorithms that use a hypercube model for address representation.

Missouri, The War On Terrorism, And Immigrants: Legal Challenges Post 9/11, Sylvia R. Lazos Vargas

Missouri Law Review

This Article focuses on the legal impacts of immigration at the state level. The pros and cons are primarily considered and debated at the federal level, however, because immigration has been mainly a prerogative of the federal government. States have not had much of an impact on immigration policy. Nevertheless, the repercussions of inconsistent choices have fallen on the states. Missouri and many other states are now home to Latinos and other immigrants because they have found in the Midwest their version on the American dream: a job, upward mobility, and security. Many are providing essential labor to key industries, …

Of Saving To Suitors, Limitation Of Shipowners' Liability, And The Inherent Conflict Between, B. Matthew Struble Nov 2002

Of Saving To Suitors, Limitation Of Shipowners' Liability, And The Inherent Conflict Between, B. Matthew Struble

Missouri Law Review

The federal courts have often been faced with the “recurring and inherent conflict” between the Limitation of Liability Act and the saving to suitors clause. The Limitation of Liability Act allows a shipowner to absolutely limit its liability, for collisions and other losses which take place without the owner’s privity or knowledge, to the value of the ship and its freight then pending. The Act also provides for exclusive federal admiralty jurisdiction to determine whether an owner is entitled to limitation of its liability. The saving to suitors clause, on the other hand, which is included in the statutory grant …

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Mapping The Domains Of The New Interactionist Paradigm, Douglas T. Kenrick, Jon K. Maner, Jon Butner, Norman P. Li, D. Vaughn Becker, Mark Schaller Nov 2002

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Mapping The Domains Of The New Interactionist Paradigm, Douglas T. Kenrick, Jon K. Maner, Jon Butner, Norman P. Li, D. Vaughn Becker, Mark Schaller

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Dynamical systems and evolutionary theories have both been proposed as integrative approaches to psychology. These approaches are typically applied to different sets of questions. Dynamical systems models address the properties of psychological systems as they emerge and change over time; evolutionary models address the specific functions and contents of psychological structures. New insights can be achieved by integrating these two paradigms, and we propose a framework to begin doing so. The framework specifies a set of six evolutionarily fundamental social goals that place predictable constraints on emergent processes within and between individuals, influencing their dynamics over the short-term, and across …

UNOAI Report 02-6

This book is designed to involve families working together on several different hands-on activities during evening meetings at school. The basis for these activities is the in-school study of related science and mathematical concepts and topics by the students in each family. The program provides an opportunity for families to work together in an interesting and enjoyable manner. The Family Aeronautical Science demonstration project consisted of three parts: (1) the in-school study of aeronautics during select science classes; (2) the extensive after-school use of the school’s computer laboratory; and (3) evening Family Aeronautical Science Nights. Key parts …

A History Of The Latter-Day Saints In The Columbia Basin Of Central Washington 1850-1972, Rick B. Jorgensen Nov 2002

A History Of The Latter-Day Saints In The Columbia Basin Of Central Washington 1850-1972, Rick B. Jorgensen

Theses and Dissertations

The Columbia Basin of Central Washington has a relatively recent Latter-day Saint history among the regions of the western states. Most of the sparsely populated rural areas in the west that have large concentrations of Latter-day Saints were originally established as "Mormon" settlements. The basin referred to lies between the Snake and Columbia Rivers and now has thousands of Latter-day Saints who have chosen to inhabit the historically barren land and call it their home. A brief visit or casual observance of the area leads many to question what were the major factors and characteristics leading to the twentieth century …
