In Feminist Rhetorical Theories, Karen Foss joins Sonja Foss and Cindy Griffin to provide deeper insight into the origins of their critique of rhetoric and their advocacy of invitational rhetoric by reviewing the backgrounds of and arguments made by several feminist theorists who suggest that patriarchal values are embedded within the core tenets of traditional rhetorical theory. The first two chapters of the book review the core concepts of rhetoric, feminism, and theory and provide a brief overview of feminist scholarship that has been published within communication studies over the past thirty years. On Apology And Consilience, Erin Ann O'Hara, Douglas Yarn

Washington Law Review

This Article joins the current debate about the proper relationship between apology and the law. Several states are considering legislation designed to shield apologies from the courtroom, and mediators are increasing their focus on the importance of apologies. The article develops an evolutionary economic analysis of apology that combines the tools of economics, game theory, and biology to more fully understand its role in dispute resolution. When the analysis is applied to the uses of apology before and at trial, a more sophisticated understanding of the relationship between apology and the law emerges.

"Beautiful Necessities:" American Beauty And The Idea Of Freedom, David L. Smith

Journal of Religion & Film

A central theme of American Beauty is the disjunction between the quests for liberation undertaken by its characters and the discoveries at which a few of them arrive. The world of the film is carefully structured as a culturally deterministic system. Nevertheless, a kind of freedom - epitomized by the experience of beauty - becomes possible for some of the characters even in the grip of fatal necessities. The Buddhist concept of mushotoku (non-attainment) and Emerson's idea of Beautiful Necessity are used to explicate the film's complex exploration of freedom and fate.

Educational multimedia tools that are marketed most successfully usually are described as "interactive" learning resources. The word interactive broadly suggests a host of positive learning experiences - student-driven inquiry, audio-visual support of ideas, and critical thinking or decision-making opportunities. However, the term interactive often is used loosely, and begs for a more concrete definition. This study defines multimedia interactivity as a give-and-take relationship between a technology tool and its human user. Technology itself is not interactive, but technology can be designed and developed to enhance an interactive experience. This study looks at the problem of defining such a nebulous term, …

This paper states that in order to contribute to epistemology design must clarify its ontological perspective. The act of designing occupies a position fundamentally different from the natural sciences that examine only things or matter and is also beyond the social sciences that deal with people and their relations. In this paper design departs from the relationship of people and things, of subjects and objects. It proposes that within the relationship of subjects to objects, of people to things and thus also of designers to the products they design, there are three different ontological positions. Human Factors Considerations In Human-Webpad Interaction – A Discussion On Color Application, C-H. Chen, Y-T. Chen, B-C. Chiou

The purpose of this study is to explore the role of color in human-Webpad interaction based on a model of human factors. Color is a prominent and prevailing visual stimulus encountered by humans daily. It affects how humans process information perceptually and cognitively. Four important design issues pertaining to the model of human factors, i.e., issues concerning humans, Webpad technology, user interface, and environment, are discussed in this paper.
