Cultural Awareness Sensitivity Training, William L. Underwood Jan 2002

Cultural Awareness Sensitivity Training, William L. Underwood

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In this study, employees of the Federal Correctional Institution in Ashland, Kentucky; the Federal Medical Center in Rochester, Minnesota; and the Federal Correctional Institution in Milan, Michigan were surveyed to determine the need for a Cultural Awareness Sensitivity Training program for staff within the United States Bureau of Prisons. In addition, if the need for this program was established, the Cultural Awareness Study was formulated to determine the scope and breadth of the coverage of the program. The respondents were asked to answer 72 questions in the following areas: (1) diversity training; (2) need assessment; (3) staff demographics; (4) inmate …

The Hand Of The Maker: The Importance Of Understanding Textiles From The "Inside Out", Beverly Gordon Jan 2002

The Hand Of The Maker: The Importance Of Understanding Textiles From The "Inside Out", Beverly Gordon

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

This is a position paper of sorts, arguing that the experience of making a textile is an important component of understanding it, and we should be encouraging textile researchers to include hands-on experiments as part of their investigation. Some TSA members will take this idea for granted because they have first-hand experience with textile making, and may find it overly obvious. The point is hardly new, and archeologist Elizabeth Barber made a strong case for the value of textile "reconstruction" in her 1994 book, Women's Work: The First 20,000 Years. Nevertheless, this is not a universally shared assumption, and …

Institutional Denial About The Dark Side Of Law School, And Fresh Empirical Guidance For Constructively Breaking The Silence, Lawrence S. Krieger Jan 2002

Institutional Denial About The Dark Side Of Law School, And Fresh Empirical Guidance For Constructively Breaking The Silence, Lawrence S. Krieger

Scholarly Publications

In the day-to-day business of legal education there is remarkably little evidence that we are aware of the unhealthy-unhappy-law-student(lawyer) problem.' The core of this article is a description of recent psychological research on the components of happiness and life satisfaction. This research provides an objective framework for understanding the pervasive problems in legal settings and thus can lead to constructive discussion and intervention. I first review empirical and anecdotal evidence of the dark side of law school, the process of denial among faculty, and failing paradigms at the heart of legal education. I then discuss the helpful recent research, and …

Bibliography Of Hate Materials, Elizabeth Thweatt Jan 2002

Bibliography Of Hate Materials, Elizabeth Thweatt

Journal of Hate Studies

Interest in working on this bibliography stems from involvement with the Collection Development Committee of the Institute for Action Against Hate at Gonzaga University as we sought to create a collection of materials to support study and research. Not being able to find a bibliography in print suggested that an annotated one would be valuable. Defining hate is problematic. Its scope is so broad that it touches almost all aspects of life and it dwells within the hearts and minds of each one of us. Although many of us cling subconsciously to it, hate harms and sometimes kills its victims. …

Development Of A Numerical Model For Shallow Marine Ecosystems With Application To Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, Mark James Brush Jan 2002

Development Of A Numerical Model For Shallow Marine Ecosystems With Application To Greenwich Bay, Rhode Island, Mark James Brush

Open Access Dissertations

Numerical models have become increasingly important tools for the study of marine ecosystems. While these models serve as valuable research and heuristic tools, they are not yet to the point of producing reliable predictions upon which to base management decisions. Further, most existing models of coastal systems have been constructed for relatively deep estuaries rather than shallow, nearshore systems which receive the bulk of anthropogenic nutrient loading and experience the most extreme degradation in water quality. A numerical model was developed for shallow marine ecosystems which contain both pelagic and benthic compartments of the food web. A series of innovations …

Transcription, Editing, And Switching Of Antibody Genes, Rafael Casellas Jan 2002

Transcription, Editing, And Switching Of Antibody Genes, Rafael Casellas

Student Theses and Dissertations

B lymphocytes are the antibody producing cells of the immune system. During B cell lymphopoiesis in the bone marrow, immunoglobulin molecules are assembled from V, D, and J gene segments through a process known as V(D)J recombination. Because of its stochastic nature, V(D)J recombination is expected to create self-reactive specificities. In targeted animals carrying autoantibodies, these specificities were shown to be silenced by deletion, anergy, and receptor editing. While anergy and deletion physically eliminate the autoreactive clone, receptor editing salvages it by replacing its immunoglobulin receptor through ongoing V(D)J recombination. Once a functional non-self -reactive receptor is generated, B lymphocytes …

Race, Ethnicity, Class, And School Dropouts: A Policy Perspective, Richard C. Verdugo Jan 2002

Race, Ethnicity, Class, And School Dropouts: A Policy Perspective, Richard C. Verdugo

Trotter Review

The author presents a review of literature on conditions and circumstances that cause youth to drop out before finishing high school. The essay explains the key features of both cultural and structural theories of low academic performance, and the author argues these theories might profitably be fused in order to formulate effective dropout prevention/intervention policies. The author recommends use of the public health model for prevention and intervention and synthesizes the findings of three recent reports on effective dropout programs.

The Globalization Of Jurisdiction, Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2002

The Globalization Of Jurisdiction, Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article begins by surveying the myriad ways that increasing globalization of communication, travel, and trade, and in particular the rise of the Internet, have forced judges and legal scholars to "adapt" traditional rules for legal jurisdiction to the new economic and social environment. For example, if a person posts content online that is legal where posted but illegal in some place where it is viewed, can that person be subject to suit in the far-off location? How should the International Shoe "minimum contacts" test account for online contacts? Is online activity sufficient to make one "present" in a jurisdiction …

The Cultural Life Of Capital Punishment: Surveying The Benefits Of A Cultural Analysis Of Law, Reviewing Austin Sarat, 'When The State Kills: Capital Punishment And The American Condition', Paul Schiff Berman Jan 2002

The Cultural Life Of Capital Punishment: Surveying The Benefits Of A Cultural Analysis Of Law, Reviewing Austin Sarat, 'When The State Kills: Capital Punishment And The American Condition', Paul Schiff Berman

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Austin Sarat's 'When the State Kills' seeks to explore the interrelationship between capital punishment and American culture. Utilizing scholarly approaches drawn from sociology, literary criticism, cultural studies, and political science, Sarat illuminates the ways in which the official legal regime of capital punishment creates, reflects, and reinforces broader cultural attitudes about crime and punishment. Moreover, he argues that the destructive long-term cultural consequences of the death penalty provide a reason for abolition over and above any criminological or doctrinal arguments against the practice.

Thus, 'When the State Kills' not only offers a powerful intervention in the ongoing death penalty debate, …

Suppose It's Not True: Challenging Mediation Ideology, Deborah R. Hensler Jan 2002

Suppose It's Not True: Challenging Mediation Ideology, Deborah R. Hensler

Journal of Dispute Resolution

Across the country, people who file lawsuits are being diverted from adjudication to mediation. Whereas once mediation was seen as the preferred means of resolving family disputes (especially those involving child custody), now it is mandated for a broad range of civil disputes. Whereas once citizens were called upon to volunteer as mediators in community justice centers outside the courts, now mediation is a line of business for lawyers whose customers are sent to them by the courts. Whereas once dispute resolution theorists called on courts to provide a variety of procedural choices for civil disputants, now courts order litigants …

Expression, Activation, And Regulation Of Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 (Mmp-2) In The Bovine Corpus Luteum, Bo Zhang Jan 2002

Expression, Activation, And Regulation Of Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 (Mmp-2) In The Bovine Corpus Luteum, Bo Zhang

Doctoral Dissertations

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been postulated to be important for angiogenesis and for tissue remodeling events associated with corpus luteum (CL) development. The MMPs are mainly regulated at three levels, transcription, activation, and inhibition by endogenous tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). Unlike most MMPs, pro-MMP-2 activation is accomplished on the cell surface rather than extracellularly. The objectives of the present study were to clone bovine cDNAs for MMP-2 and its activator, membrane type 1- (MT 1-)MMP, to investigate the expression and localization of MMP-2, MT1-MMP, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 in three ages of CL, and to explore the regulation of MMP-2 …

Review Of Rereading Victorian Fiction; Rethinking Victorian Culture, Alice Jenkins, Juliet John

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

These two fine volumes have their roots in a Victorian literature conference at the University of Liverpool in 1996, which I had the good fortune to attend. At the time, I remember being struck in particular by the erudition of a number of the papers presented and by the impressive range of material covered in eclectic ways. It is extremely pleasing to see many of the best papers from the conference expanded in these two volumes, pleasing not least because these two collections offer an extremely good snapshot representing the diverse richness and buoyant state of Victorian Studies at the …

Introduction: Theorizing The Connections Among Systems Of Subordination, Nancy Levit Jan 2002

Introduction: Theorizing The Connections Among Systems Of Subordination, Nancy Levit

Faculty Works

Theorizing the Connections Among Systems of Subordination introduces a symposium that addresses issues on the leading edge of identity theory, race theory, and critical social theory. It explains the concepts of anti-essentialism, intersectionality, multiple consciousness, multi-dimensionality, and post-intersectionality. It investigates the ways specific types of oppression - such as racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia - support and feed off of one another. It explores the dynamics of subordination that make different forms of subordination connected to each other - the mechanisms by which subordinating systems buttress each other. Where one sees sexism, one frequently can find racism; where classism exists, …

Evolving Questions And Comparative Perspectives In Cultural/Historical Perspective: Lessons From Research In Ngecha, Kenya, Carolyn Pope Edwards Jan 2002

Evolving Questions And Comparative Perspectives In Cultural/Historical Perspective: Lessons From Research In Ngecha, Kenya, Carolyn Pope Edwards

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In studying human development in cultural-historical context, we must integrate multiple levels of analysis and strive to identify culture’s imprint inside the contexts of socialization. Issues of methodology are complex. This paper argues that both comparative and historical-interpretive studies are valuable and indeed generative for each other, using as an example an international, collaborative research project focused on East African women and changing childrearing values. The site was Ngecha, a Gikuyu-speaking community in the Central Province of Kenya, during a period of rapid social change from an agrarian to a wage earning economy shortly after national independence (1968-1973). The experiences …

A Methodology For Streamlining Historical Research: The Analysis Of Technical And Scientific Publications, John T. Battalio Jan 2002

A Methodology For Streamlining Historical Research: The Analysis Of Technical And Scientific Publications, John T. Battalio

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article provides a framework for organizing and structuring the research of historical researchers who analyze technical and scientific publications. Because historical research spans both decades and centuries, an effective research methodology is essential. The framework consists of a multifaceted 10-step method for studying the written discourse of scientific and technical communication, specifically for interpreting historical data obtained from articles published in technical and scientific journals. The method is a reliable means for making sense of the enormous body of data that awaits historical researchers in the volumes of scientific and technical discourse already published.

Environmental Factors Contributing To The Disaggregation Of A Colonial Cyanoprokaryote And Its Influence On Picoplankton Abundance Within Lake Joyce, Virginia, Lewis F. Affronti Jr., B. Thomas Duquette Jan 2002

Environmental Factors Contributing To The Disaggregation Of A Colonial Cyanoprokaryote And Its Influence On Picoplankton Abundance Within Lake Joyce, Virginia, Lewis F. Affronti Jr., B. Thomas Duquette

Virginia Journal of Science

A colonial cyanoprokaryote, Aphanocapsa holsatica and autotrophic picoplankton abundance were monitored weekly over a two year period in Lake Joyce, Virginia. Significant differences were observed in both the cyanoprokaryote and picoplankton abundance over the study period and an inverse relationship was observed between these two plankton groups. Disaggregation of colonies was shown to contribute to picoplankton populations where water temperature and precipitation input apparently trigger colony dispersion. This relationship is suggested to occur in other aquatic habitats. Results of this work and its implications for ecosystem dynamics are discussed.
