Deception Detection: Study Of Information Manipulation Through Electronic Identity Theft-Email Forgery In The U.S. Military, Roy V. Rockwell Dec 2002

Deception Detection: Study Of Information Manipulation Through Electronic Identity Theft-Email Forgery In The U.S. Military, Roy V. Rockwell

Theses and Dissertations

This research describes the results of a field experiment which examines the effects of warnings on system trust and individual awareness in government computer systems through the use of email forgery. The experiment consisted of forging a trusted government email account and trying to get government computer users to reply to a forged email address. The results revealed that warning individuals about possible email forgery did not increase their awareness or reduce their level of system thrust in the email system nor did it increase their ability to detect email forgery. The results did determine that government computer users are …

A Performance Study Of Lam And Mpich On An Smp Cluster, Brian Patrick Kearns Dec 2002

A Performance Study Of Lam And Mpich On An Smp Cluster, Brian Patrick Kearns

Dissertations and Theses

Many universities and research laboratories have developed low cost clusters, built from Commodity-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components and running mostly free software. Research has shown that these types of systems are well-equipped to handle many problems requiring parallel processing. The primary components of clusters are hardware, networking, and system software. An important system software consideration for clusters is the choice of the message passing library.

MPI (Message Passing Interface) has arguably become the most widely used message passing library on clusters and other parallel architectures, due in part to its existence as a standard. As a standard, MPI is open for anyone …

Communicating The Handling Of Nonresponse Error In Journal Of Extension Research In Brief Articles, James R. Lindner, Gary J. Wingenbach Dec 2002

Communicating The Handling Of Nonresponse Error In Journal Of Extension Research In Brief Articles, James R. Lindner, Gary J. Wingenbach

Journal of Extension

This article reports a study designed to describe historical treatment of nonresponse error in the Journal of Extension. All Research in Brief articles (N=83) published in JOE (1995-99) were analyzed using content analysis techniques. Results showed that not mentioning nonresponse error, not controlling nonresponse error, or not citing the literature were the norm and not the exception. It is recommended that Extension researchers address nonresponse error when it is a threat to the external validity of their study. Recommendations for additional study and adoption of methods for handling nonresponse are provided.

A Review Of Poanes Hobomok (Hesperiidae: Hesperiinae), With The Description Of A New Subspecies From The Southern Appalachians, Ronald R. Gatrelle Nov 2002

A Review Of Poanes Hobomok (Hesperiidae: Hesperiinae), With The Description Of A New Subspecies From The Southern Appalachians, Ronald R. Gatrelle

The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey

Poanes hobomok monofacies is described from the southern limits of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee, United States. The type locality is Chestnut Mountain, 3,400’, Macon County, North Carolina, United States. This new subspecies is characterized by the similarity of males and females and overall much darker and subdued marking when compared to both P. h. hobomok (eastern to mid-, northern United States and eastern to mid-, southern Canada) and P. h. wetona (Colorado and New Mexico, United States). The northern and western range of this new taxon and the …

Creating View-Dependent Texture Maps, Cindy Grimm, Michael Kowalski Nov 2002

Creating View-Dependent Texture Maps, Cindy Grimm, Michael Kowalski

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

We present a technique for blending multiple images of an object into a single, view-dependent texture map for that object. This technique can be used for image-based rendering, when the object is known, or for “painting” a view-dependent texture map of an object. The technique provides a structured mechanism for combing images at different resolutions, producing a mip-map like structure with the different levels constructed from different images. The user controls the camera angles for which a given image is valid. The technique is also suitable for use on an object that will be animated.

Analysis Of Longitudinal Marginal Structural Models , Jennifer F. Bryan, Zhuo Yu, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

In this article we construct and study estimators of the causal effect of a time-dependent treatment on survival in longitudinal studies. We employ a particular marginal structural model (MSM), and follow a general methodology for constructing estimating functions in censored data models. The inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) estimator is used as an initial estimator and the corresponding treatment-orthogonalized, one-step estimator is consistent and asymptotically linear when the treatment mechanism is consistently estimated. We extend these methods to handle informative censoring. A simulation study demonstrates that the the treatment-orthogonalized, one-step estimator is superior to the IPTW estimator in terms …
