Democracy And Disorder: Electoral Violence And Political Modernisation In England And Wales, 1857-1880, Justin Wasserman Jan 2002

Democracy And Disorder: Electoral Violence And Political Modernisation In England And Wales, 1857-1880, Justin Wasserman

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The thesis analyses mid-nineteenth century electoral violence in England and Wales in order to contribute to our understanding of the character of Victorian electoral politics, and to assess the pace of political modernization as it has recently been defined. Historians have long acknowledged the presence of physical violence, rioting and intimidation during British elections from at least the Middle Ages to the turn of the twentieth-century, and yet the precise nature, frequency and scale of this phenomenon has remained somewhat obscured by a lack of statistical data on the subject. Therefore, by compiling a numerical sample of violence, based on …

Monitoring Process Variability With Symmetric Control Limits, Zhenlin Yang Jan 2002

Monitoring Process Variability With Symmetric Control Limits, Zhenlin Yang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Control charts for monitoring process variability, such as the R-chart and S-chart, do not have symmetric probability limits as the distribution of the sample variability is not normal. Hence, the usual zone rules can not be applied although it is still desirable to be able to use the information from more than one point in decision making. In this paper, a modified S-chart based on an optimal normalizing transformation of the sample variance is first introduced. The new chart is shown to have approximate symmetric probability limits and hence can be interpreted in the same way as that of a …

Federating Heterogeneous Digital Libraries By Metadata Harvesting, Xiaoming Liu Jan 2002

Federating Heterogeneous Digital Libraries By Metadata Harvesting, Xiaoming Liu

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies the challenges and issues faced in federating heterogeneous digital libraries (DLs) by metadata harvesting. The objective of federation is to provide high-level services (e.g. transparent search across all DLs) on the collective metadata from different digital libraries. There are two main approaches to federate DLs: distributed searching approach and harvesting approach. As the distributed searching approach replies on executing queries to digital libraries in real time, it has problems with scalability. The difficulty of creating a distributed searching service for a large federation is the motivation behind Open Archives Initiatives Protocols for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). OAI-PMH supports …

Book Review, Steven D. Smith Jan 2002

Book Review, Steven D. Smith

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Surely none of the following essays addresses or explores these claims and questions in any deliberate way. Nonetheless, in these opening pages, it seems that Ahdar is seeking to re-engage the questions that characterized the Western tradition from which our modern issues in law and religion descend, but which that tradition in its modern form has by now largely suppressed. The implication, it seems, is that in order to address the issues of the interaction of law and religion in an efficacious way, we must not only acknowledge that religion is a social phenomenon--although it is that, as Professor van …

Glittery Promise Vs. Dismal Reality: The Role Of A Criminal Lawyer In The People's Republic Of China After The 1996 Revision Of The Criminal Procedure Law, Ping Yu

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In this Article, the Author examines the recent revisions to the Chinese Criminal Procedure Law. The Author maintains that while the revisions were intended to promote a more equitable criminal justice system, the political climate in fact has rendered the revisions a step down for both defense attorneys and defendants. The Author analyzes different aspects of the revised law in order to support this point. In his conclusion, the Author suggests some changes to the criminal procedure law that may help to bring the Chinese defense system up to international standards.

Japan's Communications Interception Act: Unconstitutional Invasion Of Privacy Or Necessary Tool?, Lillian R. Gilmer Jan 2002

Japan's Communications Interception Act: Unconstitutional Invasion Of Privacy Or Necessary Tool?, Lillian R. Gilmer

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

In August 1999, Japan became the last of the G8 nations to pass legislation to allow law enforcement to wiretap communications. For some, passage of the law was long overdue; for others, its passage marked the beginning of an impermissible government encroachment on civil rights. This Note examines Japan's Communications Interception Act, the forces in Japanese society creating the need for the law, and the reasons why the law is being challenged. Part II examines the policy behind the law, its history, and public reaction to the law. Part III presents the history of organized crime in Japan, and a …

Persuasion And Resistance: The Use Of Psychology By Anglo-American Corporate Governance Advocates In France, James A. Fanto Jan 2002

Persuasion And Resistance: The Use Of Psychology By Anglo-American Corporate Governance Advocates In France, James A. Fanto

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Author argues that in the 1990s Anglo-American corporate governance became the dominant model for large, public firms in the international business world, and that corporate governance professionals relentlessly promoted and exported Anglo-American corporate governance throughout the developed and developing world. Contending that it is an appropriate time--if only because the U.S. recession and international hostilities have tempered the "irrational exuberance" of capital market proponents--to examine critically the advocacy of Anglo-American corporate governance, the Author proposes that an important part of the critical assessment is to explain the momentum of the dominant model: to understand why Anglo-American corporate governance appeared …

The analysis of the Iranian Constitution is divided into an exploration of the institutional role of the clerical elites in the form of the faqih and the Council of Guardians, the constitutionally defined role of women, the democratic elements in the Iranian Constitution, and Marxism and environmentalism …

Chinese Business And The Internet: The Infrastructure For Trust, Timothy L. Fort, Liu Junhai Jan 2002

Chinese Business And The Internet: The Infrastructure For Trust, Timothy L. Fort, Liu Junhai

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Although the Internet and E-commerce revolutions have clearly taken hold in the United States and Europe, the Chinese culture has been slow to adopt the Internet as a marketplace. The Authors cite a lack of trust on the part of both potential consumers and potential merchants as the primary obstacle to a robust Chinese E-commerce community. To remedy this lack of trust, the Article proposes the nation seek a middle way between reforms guided by Western rule of law and Eastern rule of ethics, thus incorporating effective regulatory strategies and the philosophical resources already within the Chinese cultural consciousness. The …

The Fullest Possible Accounting: The Myth Of American Pow/Mias In Southeast Asia, David L. Sutton

Iowa Journal of Communication

This essay examines the Vietnam War POW/MIA myth, the belief in the existence of living, breathing Americans soldiers still held captive in the remote jungles of Southeast Asia. This essay takes the position that the Vietnam War POW/MIA myth is not the sole product of a slick and manipulative U.S. government public relations campaign; rather, this contemporary myth finds its origin in the American monomyth, a long-standing cultural narrative.

In Situ Hydraulic Testing And Water Quality Sampling In The Hyporheic Zone Of The Columbia River, Hanford Reach, Washington, Evan V. Arntzen

Dissertations and Theses

Several chemical and radiological contaminants are present in an unconfined aquifer underlying the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site in southeast Washington State. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], previously used as an anticorrosive in plutonium production reactors on the shoreline of the Columbia River, is of particular concern because of its conservative nature, toxicity to humans and aquatic life, and proximity to protected salmon spawning habitat. Hydrogeologic data are abundant from the unconfined aquifer, but are lacking from the hyporheic zone through which Cr(VI) is transported into the river. A hydrogeologic study was conducted near one known Cr(VI) plume to determine the …

Object Persistence And Availability In Digital Libraries, Michael L. Nelson, B. Danette Allen Jan 2002

Object Persistence And Availability In Digital Libraries, Michael L. Nelson, B. Danette Allen

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We have studied object persistence and availability of 1,000 digital library (DL) objects. Twenty World Wide Web accessible DLs were chosen and from each DL, 50 objects were chosen at random. A script checked the availability of each object three times a week for just over 1 year for a total of 161 data samples. During this time span, we found 31 objects (3% of the total) that appear to no longer be available: 24 from PubMed Central, 5 from IDEAS, 1 from CogPrints, and 1 from ETD.
