Peer Group Instructional Conversation: Collaboration In Context, Linda Greene Capalbo Jan 2002

Peer Group Instructional Conversation: Collaboration In Context, Linda Greene Capalbo

Open Access Dissertations

American schools traditionally have reflected and promoted societal values of autonomy and independence in the development of the individual child. This limited perspective on how humans come to know focuses on the accrued cultural capital of each learner and neglects the role of 'the other' in the construction of meaning. Such a view can be especially debilitating for students who have been identified as marginal learners. This study examines how social interaction organizes participation opportunities and strategies for members of a peer learning group, including a student designated language learning disabled. The study documents the development and negotiation of individual …

A Numerical Study Of Gulf Stream Meandering And Associated Physical Processes, Sergey Alexander Frolov Jan 2002

A Numerical Study Of Gulf Stream Meandering And Associated Physical Processes, Sergey Alexander Frolov

Open Access Dissertations

The symmetry properties of the Gulf Stream (GS) system downstream of Cape Hatteras are investigated in a series of idealized numerical experiments. A baroclinically unstable GS-type jet is shown to stabilize over a sloping bottom due to a nearly barotropic shear associated with two recirculation gyres forming north and south of the jet. The recirculation gyres are formed via the mechanism of deep potential vorticity mixing by the bottom-intensified eddies, which accompany the meandering process of the jet. The magnitude of the northern recirculation gyre, as measured by its transport, is larger than the magnitude of the southern recirculation gyre. …

A Friend Of Edward's: Identity, Homosexuality, And The Literature Of Edward Ii, 1300-1630, Michael Gary Cornelius Jan 2002

A Friend Of Edward's: Identity, Homosexuality, And The Literature Of Edward Ii, 1300-1630, Michael Gary Cornelius

Open Access Dissertations

England's King Edward II is a figure handed down throughout history largely because of his same-sex relationships. Medieval and Renaissance authors did not choose to write about Edward II in spite of his same-sex desires, but, rather, because of them; in essence, to explore issues surrounding same-sex relationships, these writers chose Edward II as their representational figure because his name was already inextricably linked with these desires. In doing so, these authors--including Adam Davy, John Lydgate, John Barbour, Christopher Marlowe, Michael Drayton, Francis Hubert, and Elizabeth Cary--create a genre of queer literature that extends back seven centuries and that, in …

The Nature Of Infant Relinquishment As Described By Two Voices: The Relinquishing Mother And The Obstetrical Nurse, Linda Jean Kobokovich Jan 2002

The Nature Of Infant Relinquishment As Described By Two Voices: The Relinquishing Mother And The Obstetrical Nurse, Linda Jean Kobokovich

Open Access Dissertations

Little is known about the relinquishment experience and nursing interventions for infant relinquishment. The purpose of this study was to first, describe in the birth mother's voice, the relinquishment experience and her perception of nursing interventions, while second, creating an inventory of nursing interventions. Kim's (2000) Practice Domain provided the theoretical background. This two-phase study used an inductive, qualitative approach and employed a mixed method design of semi-structured interview and focus group interview. The interview was crafted upon the interview style of McCracken (1988) and Spradley (1969) while focus group methodology as detailed by Morgan (1993, 1996) guided the second …

Lagrangian Studies Of Oxygen Variability In The North Atlantic Ocean, Peter Lazarevich Jan 2002

Lagrangian Studies Of Oxygen Variability In The North Atlantic Ocean, Peter Lazarevich

Open Access Dissertations

During 1997-2000, our research group participated in a major field study to determine the absolute circulation of the Subpolar North Atlantic. We successfully tracked 50 isopycnal RAFOS floats which measured pressure, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. The floats were ballasted for the 27.5 σ &thetas; density surface, which is found in the lower subtropical thermocline waters of the North Atlantic. A comparison of our field results to historical hydrography for the region shows that the oxygen sensors provided an accuracy of about 5% over periods exceeding one year. One of our goals was to understand the conspicuous difference between the hydrographically …

Electromigration Characterization Of Aluminum-Copper Alloy Interconnects, Brian Joseph Setlik Jan 2002

Electromigration Characterization Of Aluminum-Copper Alloy Interconnects, Brian Joseph Setlik

Open Access Dissertations

Electromigration is the mass transport of atoms in a material due to elevated temperatures and an applied electric field. Electromigration-induced failure has increasingly become a reliability concern in the integrated circuit industry. As this process occurs material can be depleted resulting in void formation and an accumulation can result in hillock formation. When modeling electromigration in interconnects Black's Law is utilized to model a mean time to failure as a function of current density and temperature with additional parameters such as a current exponent, n, and an activation energy, Ea. Using this equation to extrapolate interconnect lifetimes from accelerated testing …

Magnetoacoustic Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Polymer Microspheres, Huqun Liu Jan 2002

Magnetoacoustic Chemical Sensors Based On Swellable Polymer Microspheres, Huqun Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation was to investigate chemical applications of magnetoacoustic sensors based on swellable polymer microspheres. The magnetoacoustic sensor was used to monitor viscosity of starch solution, water loading, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate polymerization.

Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (polyVBC) microspheres were prepared by suspension polymerization and then derivatized to introduce dicarboxylate groups onto the polymer backbone. Poly(vinylbenzyl chloride-trichlorophenyl acrylate) (polyVBC-TCPA) microspheres were prepared by dispersion polymerization and then derivatized to introduce amine groups onto the polymer backbone. These derivatized polymer microspheres swell and shrink with changing pH. They were entrapped in a hydrogel membrane and the membrane turbidity was investigated by …

The Availability Heuristic In Judgments Of Research Findings: Manipulations Of Subjective Experience, Michele A. Shams Jan 2002

The Availability Heuristic In Judgments Of Research Findings: Manipulations Of Subjective Experience, Michele A. Shams

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Previous studies have demonstrated that what is easy to call to mind will influence judgments. The impact of a person's subjective experience was tested for its influence on judgments of social psychological research findings. Eighty three college students generated examples of 40 research findings. Students subsequently judged the ease with which the examples came to mind and the probability of experiencing similar examples. Students then evaluated the obviousness and importance of and their interest in the research outcomes. Students also provided demographic information and indicated their previous knowledge in psychology. In the current study, the ease with which examples of …

Ningyo: Destined For The Trash Can?, Anita Y.K. Davis Jan 2002

Ningyo: Destined For The Trash Can?, Anita Y.K. Davis

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Japanese Ningyo (dolls) are static art, individual sculptures and expressions of creativity. This paper explores the loss of these wonderful works of art. While western dolls fetch high prices and are highly sought after if even a few decades old, we explore the destination of most ningyo as they fail to be recognized or preserved. Particularly the dolls fashioned by women to decorate their homes, as their beauty fades they are set aside. What has happened to them? What is taking their place as globalization is changing the decorating desires of the Japanese?

Effect Of Ph And Temperature On Conformational Changes Of A Humanized Monoclonal Antibody, Sejal Gandhi Jan 2002

Effect Of Ph And Temperature On Conformational Changes Of A Humanized Monoclonal Antibody, Sejal Gandhi

Open Access Master's Theses

Maintenance of the structural integrity of a therapeutic protein is essential for its efficacy in relation to physiological and pharmacological activity. Therefore, a major challenge confronting the pharmaceutical scientist working with protein formulation is the instability of the protein during processing, handling, storage, and use. Hence well-defined preformulation studies for proteins need to be performed to understand the stability issues relevant to their production, formulation, and use. Vast numbers of drugs available in the market are rnicromolecular dugs, which have molecular weight less than 1000 D. There is a good reason to believe that polypeptides and proteins offer different challenges …

Lecithin Organogel-Based System For Topical Application Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Angela Attar Nasseri Jan 2002

Lecithin Organogel-Based System For Topical Application Of Ketorolac Tromethamine, Angela Attar Nasseri

Open Access Master's Theses

Among various nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ketorolac tromethamine has been widely used for post operative and emergency treatment of pain. However, it accompanies adverse side effects including gastrointestinal irritation when administered orally. Topical administration of ketorolac offers the advantage of enhanced drug delivery to the affected sites with a reduced incidence of gastrointestinal side effects. However, as skin is an exceptionally effective barrier to most chemicals, very few drugs can permeate it in amounts sufficient to deliver a therapeutic dose. Therefore, systems that make the skin locally more permeable and thereby enable transdermal delivery are of great interest. Lecithin organogels …

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch Jan 2002

Evaluation Of Several Metrics Of Benthic Macroinvertibrates, Scott Lynch

Open Access Master's Theses

This study simulates individuals that are modeled after benthic macroinvertebrate populations from streams in Vermont. Using the EPA biological scoring criteria for assessing the overall condition of streams, we analyzed two metrics (parameters) associated with these criteria. The two metrics, taxa richness and Community Loss Index (CLI) have "critical" values that were set by the EPA. These "critical" values although well established are not be justified statistically. In order to analyze these "critical" values, we analyzed three different options: sample size, taxonomic level, and changing the "critical" value to achieve our goal.

We asked the question, how often would two …

Dynamics Of A Granular Particle On A Rough Surface With A Staircase Profile, J. J. P. Veerman, F. V. Cunha Jr., G. L. Vasconcelos Jan 2002

Dynamics Of A Granular Particle On A Rough Surface With A Staircase Profile, J. J. P. Veerman, F. V. Cunha Jr., G. L. Vasconcelos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

A simple model is presented for the motion of a grain down a rough inclined surface with a staircase profile. The model is an extension of an earlier model of ours where we now allow for bouncing, i.e., we consider a non-vanishing normal coefficient of restitution. It is shown that in parameter space there are three regions of interest: (i) a region of smaller inclinations where the orbits are always bounded (and we argue that the particle always stops); (ii) a transition region where halting, periodic and unbounded orbits co-exist; and (iii) a region of large inclinations where no halting …

An Examination Of The Nature Of Reading Fluency, Emily D. Russell Jan 2002

An Examination Of The Nature Of Reading Fluency, Emily D. Russell

Open Access Dissertations

The present study attempted to investigate the underlying cognitive and linguistic skills necessary for three different aspects of reading fluency: rate, phrasing, quality of expression. The variance accounted for by each of these skills on measures of reading comprehension was also evaluated. Oral reading skills of third and fourth-grade normal readers were assessed on narrative passages within each participant's independent reading level (i.e., fewer than two percent word reading errors). Results indicated similarities in the cognitive and reading skills necessary for rapid reading and appropriate phrasing. Specifically, word recognition was the strongest predictor in both cases. However, oromotor accuracy and …

Ghosts At The Table: Historiography And Nonfiction Narrative As Rhetorical Constructs Of The Mexican Counter-Revolution Of 1913, Sylvia Montgomery Shaw Jan 2002

Ghosts At The Table: Historiography And Nonfiction Narrative As Rhetorical Constructs Of The Mexican Counter-Revolution Of 1913, Sylvia Montgomery Shaw

Open Access Dissertations

One of the hallmarks of historical nonfiction is its purported allegiance to truth. But what is historical truth? Prevalent narratives and characterizations of events and individuals? What if research uncovers primary sources that contradict each other? How does one determine the "truth"? I explore these issues by writing my own carefully researched nonfiction novel about a Porfirian family, the Enrique Zepedas, and analyzing it in terms of three intersecting fields: historiography, nonfiction narrative, and rhetoric, to illustrate the centrality of language in conceptions of reality. This study is above all a rhetorical one. Zepeda was a prominent Mexican who conspired …

Convective Transport Of Hydroxyl And Hydroperoxyl Precursors To The Upper Troposphere, Julie Amy Snow Jan 2002

Convective Transport Of Hydroxyl And Hydroperoxyl Precursors To The Upper Troposphere, Julie Amy Snow

Open Access Dissertations

Tropospheric photochemistry point models are unable to capture the vertical structure of HOx (HO and HO2), important atmospheric oxidants in the troposphere. Specifically, the models underestimate HOx levels in the upper troposphere. Convective vertical motion has been proposed as a mechanism to transport HOx precursors, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), methylhydroperoxide (CH3OOH), and formaldehyde (CH2O), into the upper troposphere where they are photolyzed to form HOx. Using a convective influence product which incorporated air mass back trajectories and GOES water vapor images, marine tracers methyl iodide and bromoform, and continental tracers tetrachloroethene and dichloromethane where identified as excellent tracers for convective influence …

An Analysis Of The Predictive Power Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change Applied To Dietary Fat Intake, Julie A. Wright Jan 2002

An Analysis Of The Predictive Power Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Behavior Change Applied To Dietary Fat Intake, Julie A. Wright

Open Access Dissertations

The present research was designed to advance the theory and science of health behavior change by evaluating one of the most commonly used behavior change theories, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). Two criteria were selected for evaluation, empirical adequacy (predictive power) and generalizability of the TTM to dietary fat intake. Predictive power was evaluated by testing evidence-based a priori predictions. Generalizability was evaluated by testing a priori predictions founded on smoking data and tested on diet data. Longitudinal data from a large scale randomized control trial on adults recruited from primary care practices were used to test a priori predictions of …

Analysis And Simulation Of Skeletonema Costatum (Grev.) Cleve Annual Abundance Patterns In Lower Narragansett Bay 1959 To 1996, David Gerald Borkman Jan 2002

Analysis And Simulation Of Skeletonema Costatum (Grev.) Cleve Annual Abundance Patterns In Lower Narragansett Bay 1959 To 1996, David Gerald Borkman

Open Access Dissertations

A 38-year time series (1959 to 1996) of weekly observations of abundance of the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum and related plankton habitat parameters in lower Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island was analyzed. A phytoplankton growth model was then developed for investigation of Skeletonema annual abundance pattern regulating mechanisms. A ca. 45% decline in Skeletonema abundance was detected, from 2,292 cells ml−1 (prior to September 1974) to 1,263 cells ml−1 (after August 1980). Winter-spring decreases were greatest, with declines in March Skeletonema abundance from near 3,400 cells ml−1 before a 1977 change-point to mean abundance of ca. 1,000 cells ml−1 after 1977. …

Information Content Of Open-Market Stock Repurchase And Dividend Policy, Zhiyi Song Jan 2002

Information Content Of Open-Market Stock Repurchase And Dividend Policy, Zhiyi Song

Open Access Dissertations

Numerous studies have documented that the stock market reacts, on average, positively to open market repurchases and dividend increase announcements. Most studies draw their conclusions based on the belief that the motivations for different stock repurchase programs are the same across firms, or the motivations for dividend increase are the same for different firms. However, we find that the stock market reacts negatively to about 20-30% stock repurchase announcements or dividend increase announcements every year from 1985 to 1999. This evidence is not documented in any previous literature; therefore, none of the existing hypotheses provide satisfactory explanations. There have been …
