The Répertoire De Vedettes-Matière De L’Université Laval Library 1946-1992: Francophone Subject Access In North America And Europe, Robert P. Holley

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In 1946, the Université Laval in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, started using Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) in French. To do so, the librarians created an authority list in French, Répertoire de Vedettes-matière (RVM), whose first published edition appeared in 1962 (the first edition appeared with the title Répertoire des Vedettes-matière). Since then, RVM has had increasing importance in providing support for subject access in francophone countries around the world as other libraries, first in Canada and then in Europe, either adopted RVM, often with some modification, for subject access or used it as a resource for creating French …

Draft Of The Integrated Studies Of Educational Technology: A Formative Evaluation Of The E-Rate Program, Michael J. Puma, Duncan D. Chaplin, Kristen M. Olson, Amy C. Pandjiris Oct 2002

Draft Of The Integrated Studies Of Educational Technology: A Formative Evaluation Of The E-Rate Program, Michael J. Puma, Duncan D. Chaplin, Kristen M. Olson, Amy C. Pandjiris

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Although the United States is a leader of the technological revolution, there are segments of American society—particularly the poor, minorities, and the geographically isolated—for whom access to computers and the Internet is significantly lower. The E-Rate, created by Congress as part of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 (Public Law 104-104), is a federal program that seeks to bridge this “digital divide” by supporting broader public access to the new digital technology at public and private nonprofit educational institutions. The availability of such public access points has been found to reduce economic and racial disparities, and some research suggests that when …

Effects Of Daily Oral Care With 0.12% Chlorhexidine Gluconate And A Standard Oral Care Protocol On The Development Of Nosocomial Pneumonia In Intubated Patients- A Pilot Study, Michelle Lynn Bopp

Dental Hygiene Theses & Dissertations

The initial purpose of the study was to determine if a difference existed between nosocomial pneumonia rates for intubated patients who received twice daily oral hygiene care with 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate and those who received the standard oral care while in the critical care unit (CCU). Over seven months (February - August), participants were identified through screening and consent procedures, and randomized into one of two groups. Over the seven months, only five subjects were enrolled. While in the study, twice-daily oral hygiene care consisting of brushing the cheeks, teeth and endotracheal tube with a suctioning toothbrush using an FDA …

Defining And Customizing Tagmemic Interaction For Historic House Museum Websites: A Study Of Effective Learning Design For Museum Educators, Julie Jenkins Strohkorb Oct 2002

Defining And Customizing Tagmemic Interaction For Historic House Museum Websites: A Study Of Effective Learning Design For Museum Educators, Julie Jenkins Strohkorb

English Theses & Dissertations

Educational multimedia tools that are marketed most successfully usually are described as "interactive" learning resources. The word interactive broadly suggests a host of positive learning experiences - student-driven inquiry, audio-visual support of ideas, and critical thinking or decision-making opportunities. However, the term interactive often is used loosely, and begs for a more concrete definition. This study defines multimedia interactivity as a give-and-take relationship between a technology tool and its human user. Technology itself is not interactive, but technology can be designed and developed to enhance an interactive experience. This study looks at the problem of defining such a nebulous term, …

Australasian Law And Canadian Statutes In The Nineteenth Century: A Study Of The Movement Of Colonial Legislation Between Jurisdictions, Jeremy Finn Oct 2002

Australasian Law And Canadian Statutes In The Nineteenth Century: A Study Of The Movement Of Colonial Legislation Between Jurisdictions, Jeremy Finn

Dalhousie Law Journal

This paper considers the use between 1850 and 1900 by Anglo-Canadian legislatures of legislative precedents from the Australian and New Zealand colonies and argues that while a wide range of Australasian laws were considered by Canadian legislators, the most significant Australasian influences are to be found in mining law, electoral and constitutional law and land law The paper goes on to explore, by use of archival, parliamentary and published materials, the processes by which Canadian legislators acquired their knowledge of these Australasian initiatives. While governmental and institutional channels (including the Colonial Office) played a significant part in the transmission of …

Breach Of Contract?: The New Economy, Access To Justice And The Ethical Responsibilities Of The Legal Profession, Richard Devlin Oct 2002

Breach Of Contract?: The New Economy, Access To Justice And The Ethical Responsibilities Of The Legal Profession, Richard Devlin

Dalhousie Law Journal

In the last several years, there has been a growing awareness within the legal profession that access to justice, that is, to legal advice and representation, is becoming increasingly difficult. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the cuts to legal aid programmes. The author argues that the response of the legal profession is inadequate because it remains trapped in a welfarist paradigm of legal aid that is insensitive to the impact of the new economy and the newly emergent social investment state. The author explores the possibility of an alternative response - the adoption of a mandatory pro bono …

Differences In Perception And Number Of Incidents Of Sexual Harassment Among College Students In The United States And The Federal Republic Of Germany, Antonia Von Tobiesen

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to determine the difference between American and German students in perception and frequency of sexual harassment. The participants were female Old Dominion University psychology undergraduates and psychology students from the Universitaet Freiburg. A survey containing the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire {SEQ), the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and modified questions from Gutek's (1985) Main Questionnaire (Women's Version) was used. The survey was designed to reveal sexual harassment experiences in the work environment or in the university setting, while measuring the effect of the experiences on self-esteem and the students' reactions to the incidents. The results indicated that …

Evaluation Of Kentucky’S You Drink And Drive. You Lose”, Kenneth R. Agent, Eric R. Green, Ronald E. Langley

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Alcohol and drug related crashes continue to be one of the highest priority problem identification areas and considerable emphasis is being placed on programs to impact those types of crashes. Various types of campaigns have been used over the years in an attempt to reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes. Kentucky was selected within the Southeast Region of the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to conduct a comprehensive impaired driving campaign entitled “You Drink & Drive. You Lose”. The campaign was conducted around the 2002 Labor Day holiday. The objective of this report was to document …

Visualisation Of Synchronous Firing In Multi-Dimensional Spike Trains, L Stuart, M Walter, R Borisyuk

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The gravity transform algorithm is used to study the dependencies in firing of multi-dimensional spike trains. The pros and cons of this algorithm are discussed and the necessity for improved representation of output data is demonstrated. Parallel coordinates are introduced to visualise the results of the gravity transform and principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the quantity of data represented whilst minimising loss of information.

Colombia's Conflicts: The Spillover Effects Of A Wider War, Richard Millett Mr. Oct 2002

Colombia's Conflicts: The Spillover Effects Of A Wider War, Richard Millett Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph is the first in a new Special Series of monographs that stems from the February 2001 and the March 2002 conferences--co-sponsored by the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College and The Dante B. Fascell North-South Center of the University of Miami--that dealt with the "Implementation of Plan Colombia." It provides a careful examination of the so-called "spillover" problems generated by Colombia's three simultaneous wars against illegal drug traffickers, insurgents, and self-appointed paramilitary groups. All seek, in one way or another, violently to change or depose the state. All use the uncontrolled "gray areas" in Colombia …

Market Segmentation And Information Values Of Earnings Announcements: Some Empirical Evidence From An Event Study On The Chinese Stock Market, Yu Gao, Yiu Kuen Tse

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper investigates the trading activities of two distinct classes of shareholders, namely, the Chinese domestic investors and the foreign investors in the segmented Chinese A-share and B-share markets, respectively. We conduct an event study on the annual earnings announcements based on two different accounting standards: IAS and PRC GAAP. The earnings announcements based on IAS and PRC GAAP are value relevant. The investors in the B-share market react to both the IAS and PRC GAAP earnings announcements, while the investors in the A-share market pay more attention to the PRC GAAP earnings reports. In the B-share market, positive abnormal …

The Problem Of The Expert Juror., Paul F. Kirgis Oct 2002

The Problem Of The Expert Juror., Paul F. Kirgis

Faculty Law Review Articles

In this article, I argue that the new focus on the risks of spurious "expertise" compels attention to the problem of juror expertise. 24 Specialized knowledge poses the same risks to the truth-seeking objectives of trial whether it enters the decision-making process through expert testimony or through the back door of juror background knowledge. In fact, the risks to accuracy may be less when expertise is offered by a witness than when it is introduced by a juror, because the witness will be subject to cross-examination and rebuttal. Flawed expertise brought to the case by a juror is not subject …

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer Oct 2002

Retracing The Novel: Amatory Fiction And The Novel's Rise, Sarah Elizabeth Alderfer

English Theses & Dissertations

Arguing against. Ian Watt's The Rise of the Novel and other academically accepted accounts of the history of the novel, this thesis positions amatory fiction at the forefront of novel's traditional genealogy by comparing amatory fiction with the Gothic novel in order to link the two genres outside of realistic fiction such as Pamela. Using Love in Excess by Eliza Haywood and The Monk by Matthew Lewis as representative examples of amatory fiction and Gothicism, respectively, this thesis ultimately establishes a connection between the three genres. It examines the similarities in amatory fiction and Gothicism through their use of …

Conspiracy Rhetoric In Cyberspace: Jim Condit And The 9/11 Attacks On America, An Analysis Of The Voice And Appeals Used In Condit's Rhetoric, Kreg Allan Kinney

English Theses & Dissertations

This thesis analyzes the voices and appeals used in conspiracy rhetoric which is distributed via the internet. The voices, one measure of the argument's authority, are analyzed and described in depth, with eleven voices identified. These voices and their significance to Condit's text as a whole are discussed. Following the voice analysis, an Aristotelian analysis of the text's appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos is performed to examine the persuasive force of Condit's argument. Finally, the correlation between the voices and the appeals is examined to determine the strength of the correlation between the two constructs and to determine whether …
