Reparations Theory And Postcolonial Puerto Rico: Some Preliminary Thoughts, Pedro A. Malavet
Reparations Theory And Postcolonial Puerto Rico: Some Preliminary Thoughts, Pedro A. Malavet
UF Law Faculty Publications
This article primarily focuses on the plight of the Puerto Ricans on the island because, in addition to their flawed social construction by the United States and lack of national political power, they are also legally constructed as second-class citizens. In defining the legal rights of Puerto Ricans, the U.S. Supreme Court has held that territorial citizens are entitled to fewer constitutional protections than U.S. citizens residing in any of the fifty states. The racist and essentialist social construction of the Puerto Ricans as inassimilable, the denial of legal rights by the courts, along with the democratic deficit which deprives …

Nonprofit Organziations In Africa: Financial Strategies And Challenges, Christie Chilo Onwujuba
African Social Science Review
This study investigates the financial conditions of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) in Africa with emphasis on the sources of funds. Africa faced with the enormous task of development and improving the general well being of its people could benefit from the services of nonprofit organizations. However, the ability of these NPOs to accomplish development goals and represent the interest of the marginalized depends on the availability and adequacy of resources. The results of this study contradict the common notion that the growth of the sector is fueled by the financial support of governments in the industrialized countries. Grassroot NPOs in Africa …

The Socio-Legal Acceptance Of New Technologies: A Close Look At Artificial Insemination, Gaia Bernstein
The Socio-Legal Acceptance Of New Technologies: A Close Look At Artificial Insemination, Gaia Bernstein
Washington Law Review
Heated debates often surround the introduction of an important new technology into society, as exemplified by current controversies surrounding human cloning and privacy protection on the Internet. Underlying these controversies are disruptions to central socio-legal values caused by these new technologies. Whether new technologies will eventually be accepted by society is often contingent on the reaction of the legal system. This mandates the formulation of a conceptual framework for understanding and structuring the way the law should react in cases surrounding the adoption of new technologies. By using the case study of artificial insemination this Article develops the tools for …
On Apology And Consilience, Erin Ann O'Hara, Douglas Yarn
On Apology And Consilience, Erin Ann O'Hara, Douglas Yarn
Washington Law Review
This Article joins the current debate about the proper relationship between apology and the law. Several states are considering legislation designed to shield apologies from the courtroom, and mediators are increasing their focus on the importance of apologies. The article develops an evolutionary economic analysis of apology that combines the tools of economics, game theory, and biology to more fully understand its role in dispute resolution. When the analysis is applied to the uses of apology before and at trial, a more sophisticated understanding of the relationship between apology and the law emerges.

Race, Crime And The Pool Of Surplus Criminality: Or Why The "War On Drugs" Was A "War On Blacks", Kenneth B. Nunn
Race, Crime And The Pool Of Surplus Criminality: Or Why The "War On Drugs" Was A "War On Blacks", Kenneth B. Nunn
UF Law Faculty Publications
The War on Drugs has had a devastating effect on African American communities nationwide. The concept of the pool of surplus criminality may explain the drug war's focus on African Americans. Faced with a perceived drug problem, White Americans naturally identified African American people as the source of that threat and targeted them for police harassment and penal control. There are ways in which the drug war may be construed as a race war. The disproportionate impact on the African American community, evidence that policy makers anticipated the drug war would disproportionately harm the African American community, and the historic …

Misdiagnosing Esophageal Perforation As Esophageal Atresia, Shaheed M. Meeralebbae, Seidahmed M. Zain, Abdelbasit O. Basir, Abdullah M. Ahmed, Abomelha M. Abdullah
Saudi Medical Journal
We report a case of traumatic perforation of esophagus misdiagnosed as esophageal atresia in a 1.7 kg preterm (28 weeks) twin. Initial resistance to the passage of orogastric tube and failure of passage of contrast material down the esophagus prompted the diagnosis of esophageal atresia. Subsequently, the passage of orogastric tube as well as radiological findings at the age of 7 days made us change the diagnosis to traumatic perforation of esophagus. The baby was managed conservatively and discharged in good health at the age of 2 months. Literature is reviewed and the attention of pediatricians is drawn to this …

Childbearing In Ghana: How Beliefs Affect Care, Michelle Fischer
Childbearing In Ghana: How Beliefs Affect Care, Michelle Fischer
African Diaspora ISPs
Childbearing is an event in a woman's life that requires particular care. Especially in villages, Ghanaian women must choose between modern, traditional, and religious caregivers. The type of care they chose depends on what cultural and religious beliefs they hold. Because of Ghana's prenatal society, infertility is the most heartbreaking affliction that can befall a woman. Caregivers in Komenda offer remedies ranging from herbs to prayer to agreement with fertility gods. Information regarding family planning is not widespread throughout the country, which forces women to rely on unreliable natural practices. Because of the negative stigma attached to contraceptive use, many …

An Assessment Of The Plausibility Of Pan-Africanism From Various Perspectives, Crystal Holmes
African Diaspora ISPs
The following is my attempt to assess the plausibility and desirability of different levels of Pan-Africanism from the perspectives of Africans and Diasporans. I use historical, cultural and social considerations from both perspectives in my assessment. The observations by the author took place in Ghana between August and November of 2002. Observations from American culture are from the author's experience as an African-American.

An Analysis Of The Business Communication Skills Needed By Entry-Level Accountants, David S. Christensen, David Rees
An Analysis Of The Business Communication Skills Needed By Entry-Level Accountants, David S. Christensen, David Rees
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
Numerous surveys have established the importance of communication skills for entry-level accountants, but none has identified the specific communication skills needed. To help us identify what skills to emphasize in an accounting curriculum, members of the Institute of Management Accounting (IMA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) were surveyed to determine (1) the relative importance of 32 business communication skills cited in business communication literature and (2) the level of satisfaction with college preparation in those skills. Based on mean ratings on two five-point scales, English skills (pertaining to spelling, grammar, and punctuation) were significantly more important …

A Method For Cost Effective Integration Of High-Speed Wan Transmission Technologies Into A College Computer Networking Curriculum, Dennis Guster, James E. Weber, Charles Hall
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
The physical structure of the Internet has entered a transition recently due to the demand for higher bandwidth worldwide. Technologies such as T1 and frame relay have been superseded by asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and digital/asymmetrical subscriber loops (DSL/ASL). Along with the new hardware technology there are improvements in software/network protocols as well. The concepts of quality of service and reservation bandwidth further enhance the efficiency of these new technologies by optimizing the use of the increased bandwidth provided.
While networking is extremely important, representing this physical structure in labs for educational purposes can be expensive, with even simple setups …
Instructional Case: A Manufacturing Project, David Satava
Instructional Case: A Manufacturing Project, David Satava
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
Colleges and universities frequently require business majors to take managerial accounting. Since many non-accounting majors find accounting boring this may be one of the reasons why they may have a difficult time learning the fundamental concepts of the course. This paper describes a project I employ when teaching managerial accounting to make cost accounting interesting and relevant. One of the reasons students may have a difficult time learning managerial accounting is that traditional accounting assignments generally provide students with all of the numbers. Thus, there is very little involvement or attachment to the numbers. This project was designed to get …

Using And Enhancing Online Lecture Materials, Kevin R. Parker
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
Online lecture materials are in wide use, but their level of detail as well as level of sophistication varies greatly. Incorporating some sophisticated yet easy-to-use web features into online lecture materials makes them both more useful and more engaging. The author explains how to apply pop-ups, image swapping, and bookmarks to enliven online materials, and discusses special applications for password protection and date-triggered links.
Disentangling Pay And Productivity In A Corporatist Economy: The Case Of Germany, Scott M. Fuess Jr., Meghan Millea
Disentangling Pay And Productivity In A Corporatist Economy: The Case Of Germany, Scott M. Fuess Jr., Meghan Millea
Department of Economics: Faculty Publications
Conventional theory predicts that productivity gains lead to pay hikes. Pay increases, however, can influence labor productivity. But what about in a corporatist economy? Focusing on Germany, we use an innovative technique developed by Geweke to disentangle the relationship between pay and productivity.
