Fermat, Schubert, Einstein, And Behrens-Fisher: The Probable Difference Between Two Means When Σ12≠ Σ22, Shlomo S. Sawilowsky

Theoretical and Behavioral Foundations of Education Faculty Publications

The history of the Behrens-Fisher problem and some approximate solutions are reviewed. In outlining relevant statistical hypotheses on the probable difference between two means, the importance of the Behrens- Fisher problem from a theoretical perspective is acknowledged, but it is concluded that this problem is irrelevant for applied research in psychology, education, and related disciplines. The focus is better placed on “shift in location” and, more importantly, “shift in location and change in scale” treatment alternatives.

Comprehensive Subgrade Deflection Acceptance Criteria - Executive Summary, James Crovetti Nov 2002

Comprehensive Subgrade Deflection Acceptance Criteria - Executive Summary, James Crovetti

Transportation Research Center: Subgrade Deflection Studies

This executive summary presents a summary of the findings of all study phases conducted to develop recommendations for the development of specifications for subgrade acceptance based on measured deflections. The rolling wheel deflectomter (RWD), portable truck-mounted deflection measurement systems, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) were utilized on numerous subgrade construction projects between the 1998 and 2001 construction seasons. Comparative nuclear density and soil stiffness gauge readings were also obtained at selected locations on many of the included construction projects.

The research findings indicate that deflection test results may be appropriate for identifying areas of poor in-place stability within constructed subgrades. …

Designing Interdisciplinary Approaches To Problem Solving Into Computer Languages, Daniel E. Cooke, Vladik Kreinovich, Joseph E. Urban

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many interdisciplinary design efforts require the involvement of computer scientists because of the complexity of the problem solving tools available for the projects. This paper demonstrates how appropriate language design can place high level languages in the hands of scientists and engineers, thus providing a more automated approach to problem solving that may reduce the amount of computer scientist involvement. The language SequenceL serves as an example of this approach.

Soils Of Mississippi County, Arkansas, J. M. Mckimmey, B. Dixon, H. D. Scott, C. M. Scarlat

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

Along with air and water, soil contributes essential processes to the natural order of global cycles. With the exception of edibles from the sea, virtually everything we, and most other land-based animals, eat is derived from soil. Soil is a storage medium of essential minerals and nutrients for fulfilling our agricultural and nutritional needs. Humans work the soil to provide the basics of food, clothing, and shelter. We also use the soil as a medium to store and discard our waste. Virtually everything we do is in some way connected to soil

Extensions Of The Concept Of Exchangeability And Their Applications, Phillip I. Good Nov 2002

Extensions Of The Concept Of Exchangeability And Their Applications, Phillip I. Good

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Permutation tests provide exact p-values in a wide variety of practical testing situations. But permutation tests rely on the assumption of exchangeability, that is, under the hypothesis, the joint distribution of the observations is invariant under permutations of the subscripts. Observations are exchangeable if they are independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.), or if they are jointly normal with identical covariances. The range of applications of these exact, powerful, distribution-free tests can be enlarged through exchangeability- preserving transforms, asymptotic exchangeability, partial exchangeability, and weak exchangeability. Original exact tests for comparing the slopes of two regression lines and for the analysis of …

A Test Of Symmetry, Abdul R. Othman, H. J. Keselman, Rand R. Wilcox, Katherine Fradette, A. R. Padmanabhan Nov 2002

A Test Of Symmetry, Abdul R. Othman, H. J. Keselman, Rand R. Wilcox, Katherine Fradette, A. R. Padmanabhan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

When data are nonnormal in form classical procedures for assessing treatment group equality are prone to distortions in rates of Type I error and power to detect effects. Replacing the usual means with trimmed means reduces rates of Type I error and increases sensitivity to detect effects. If data are skewed, say to the right, then it has been postulated that asymmetric trimming, to the right, should be better at controlling rates of Type I error and power to detect effects than symmetric trimming from both tails of the data distribution. Keselman, Wilcox, Othman and Fradette (2002) found that Babu, …

Type I Error Rates For Rank-Based Tests Of Homogeneity Of Slopes, Alan J. Klockars, Tim P. Moses Nov 2002

Type I Error Rates For Rank-Based Tests Of Homogeneity Of Slopes, Alan J. Klockars, Tim P. Moses

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The purpose of this study was to explicate two issues concerning the standard and rank based test of homogeneity of slopes. Two alternative ranking methods intended to address nonnormality and additive treatment effect patterns were developed and compared in terms of their ability to control Type I error. The results replicated previous findings of inflated Type I error rates with leptokurtic curves and with rank based tests with some patterns of additive treatment effects. The new nonparametric procedures generally control Type I error although they were slightly inflated with skewed distributions.

Teachers' Perceptions On Special Education Students' Social Skills And The Effect Of Peer Perceptions In The General Educational Classroom., Erin E. Harman Nov 2002

Teachers' Perceptions On Special Education Students' Social Skills And The Effect Of Peer Perceptions In The General Educational Classroom., Erin E. Harman

Theses & Honors Papers

This study identified inconsistencies between teachers' perceptions of students with disabilities and parallels between the lack of positive peer perceptions and the inconsistent perceptions of general and special education teachers. To establish data this study used a selective group of seventh grade general and special education teachers from a middle school in central Virginia. This study also used one general education classroom containing students with and without disabilities. General and Special Education teachers were surveyed using the Profile/ Form Walker-McConnell Scale of Social Competence and School Adjustment. Students used a modified version of the peer interpersonal assessment developed by Farmer, …
