A Descriptive Comparative Study Of Student Learning Styles From Selected Medical Education Programs, Dennis C. Gregory, Steven K. Huisman
A Descriptive Comparative Study Of Student Learning Styles From Selected Medical Education Programs, Dennis C. Gregory, Steven K. Huisman
Masters Theses
The authors’ hypothesis was to determine whether comparable variation coexisted among the individual learning styles of health professional students and the general population. Our purpose was to demonstrate learning style variability, as well as justification for the utilization of different teaching modalities throughout education. We administered David Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory IIa to sample populations of Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic students (n = 53), third and fourth year Medical students (n = 28), undergraduate Nursing students (n = 65), second and third year Physician Assistant students (n = 49), and a General student population (n = 70). The results were analyzed …
Alcohol Use And Perceptions Of Alcohol Use Among Biology, Criminal Justice, Health Science, And Psychology Capstone Students At Grand Valley State University, Rebecca Postma
Masters Theses
This study brought the widely used Rutgers PRSP survey to upper level students in biology, criminal justice, health science and psychology capstone classes in the academic year of 2000/2001. The survey explores student perceptions of their own alcohol use, of their friends’ use, and that of other students. Data from 291 participants reveals gender differences in perception, differences in self-reported drinking habits among the four capstone groups, and differences between this group of participants and their expectations of other students’ drinking. These areas of information along with other interesting findings give important insight into the upper level students of Grand …

Project Continuation Proposal: Radiation Transport Modeling Of Beam-Target Experiments For The Aaa Project, William Culbreth
Project Continuation Proposal: Radiation Transport Modeling Of Beam-Target Experiments For The Aaa Project, William Culbreth
Reactor Campaign (TRP)
The AAA program will rely on the use of an accelerator-based transmuter1 to expose spent nuclear fuel to high-energy neutrons. The neutron flux will be sufficient to activate or fission the long-lived isotopes of Tc, I, Pu, Am, Cm, and Np that present a significant radiological hazard in commercial spent fuel. Transmuter fuel will be subcritical and a high-energy proton accelerator is needed to maintain the necessary neutron flux through the use of a neutron spallation target. The maximum neutron energy produced by spallation (~ 800 MeV) is significantly higher than that produced by a commercial light water reactor (~ …
Experimental Investigation Of Steel Corrosion In Lead Bismuth Eutectic (Lbe): Characterization, Species Identification, And Chemical Reactions, John Farley, Dale L. Perry, Allen L. Johnson
Experimental Investigation Of Steel Corrosion In Lead Bismuth Eutectic (Lbe): Characterization, Species Identification, And Chemical Reactions, John Farley, Dale L. Perry, Allen L. Johnson
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The goal of the present research is to achieve a basic understanding of corrosion of steels by Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE). Liquid LBE is under consideration in the transmuter as both a spallation target and as a blanket coolant. There have been previous studies of LBE, especially by the Russians, who have over 80 reactor-years experience with LBE coolant in their Alpha-class submarine reactors. However, a fundamental understanding and verification of its role in the corrosion of steels is still very incomplete. We have begun a program of post-experiment testing and analysis on steel samples that have been in intimate …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics: Task V 4th Quarterly Report, Samir Moujaes
Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)
The project is moving on target with the newly realigned objective set for the Phase I. Through close communications with Dr. Li and Dr. Jinsuo Zhang from LANL a realignment of the simulation work has been recommended. The reason for that is the vendor of STAR-CD/CHEMKIN had not perfected yet the final coupling of the post processing of output for any potential surface chemistry reaction taking place on the inside pipe surface of the LBE loop. This is because the coupling of CHEMKIN and STAR-CD has been done fairly recently.
Our final effort has been to generate using an innovative …

Assessing Faculty Perspectives On Implementing The Boyer Model, Delilah Anne Schwaner
Assessing Faculty Perspectives On Implementing The Boyer Model, Delilah Anne Schwaner
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Boyer model is a well-recognized format chosen by many universities as a guide for leave, rank and tenure criteria, and for rewarding activities by faculty. Given a past, brief association with this model by faculty and administration at Southern Utah University, and the continuing need for a comprehensive review of scholarly effort in the institution, this study was undertaken to gauge the level of understanding of Boyer's model and his four scholarships, satisfaction with present policies, and attitudes toward change. The aim was to explore the use of a questionnaire as an instrument to measure knowledge and attitudes, to …
Narrative Desire And Historical Reparations: Three Contemporary British Authors, Timothy S Gauthier
Narrative Desire And Historical Reparations: Three Contemporary British Authors, Timothy S Gauthier
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
British novelists since Walter Scott have exhibited an interest in history, but this discursive affinity has transformed itself into a veritable obsession in the fiction of the last two decades. Indeed, a concern with and distrust of history and historiographic projects is often hailed as a defining characteristic of postmodernism. And while writers of "new historical novels" cannot be said to form a movement as such, the predominance of such texts reveals the presence of communal concerns, and a readily identifiable strain of literary production that addresses the circulation of mutual symptoms, beliefs, and anxieties as a response to living …

Community College Faculty Attitudes On Professional Development Attendance And Incentives, Patricia T Laflamme
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The full-time teaching faculty of the Community College of Southern Nevada responded to a survey designed to gather their views on internal professional development activities coordinated by the Faculty Center for Learning & Teaching (FCLT). The survey items elicited what types of activities or attitudes interfered with faculty attendance at such activities and what potential incentives or rewards were attractive to them in return for their participation in the activities; Significant findings for reasons that faculty do not participate in professional development primarily revolved around the faculty demographic characteristics of gender or teaching area (vocational or academic). This was true …

The Effects Of Socialization Through The Arts: Teaching Life Skills Strategies To Youth In West Las Vegas, Marcia Raquel Robinson
The Effects Of Socialization Through The Arts: Teaching Life Skills Strategies To Youth In West Las Vegas, Marcia Raquel Robinson
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
There are at least 200 gangs in Southern Nevada with more than 7,700 identified members. "Gang bangers" do not anticipate a future or invest in "dreams," most do not expect to live beyond their 20's. Las Vegas is more the rule than the exception; the West Las Vegas community is the epicenter needing attention. The planning and development of this pilot program "The Performing and Visual Arts Camp for Kids" focused on teaching life skills and character development, such as getting along with others, respect for oneself and others, initiative, the ability to communicate, problem solving, perseverance, and goal setting …
Relationship Of Selected Student Characteristics To Student Ratings Of Importance And Levels Of Satisfaction, Michael L Sauer
Relationship Of Selected Student Characteristics To Student Ratings Of Importance And Levels Of Satisfaction, Michael L Sauer
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Low graduation and retention rates are problems that many universities and colleges across the country face. Students often leave an institution prematurely, not because of academic difficulties but because of other obstacles that they believe impede their progress. Studying student satisfaction can help to understand what some of these difficulties might be. In order to address this issue, this study examined the relationship between student ratings of importance and student satisfaction with elements of the university environment and student characteristics; There were 1,208 subjects in this study. All subjects were given the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory during the Spring 2002 …

A Comparative Study Of State Educational *Policies: Systemic Models Of Equitable Reform, Celeste Ann Jackson Stansberry
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Substantive attention to disproportionate gaps in achievement between minorities and non-minorities has led state educational agencies to institute responsive policy mandates. The implementation of equity and multicultural policies has resulted in the development of strategies and evaluative measures that assist in building capacity within educational environments to meet the needs of diverse groups of students. This comparative case study examines the ways in which two states have addressed issues of low educational attainment among ethnic and linguistic minority students by instituting equity policy mandates. The two state departments of education have reached out to stakeholders, developed action plans, and attempted …
Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel
Cuba's Tourist Industry: Parallel Economies And Social Stratification, Marie Nathan Hummel
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
International tourism has played an important role in unintended social changes in socialist countries. These social and cultural changes affect not only the economic, political and cultural genre of the government, but also of its citizens; This thesis asks the question, "Has the re-introduction of international tourism in Cuba diluted and compromised the egalitarian goals of the revolution"? I intend to show that the consequences of Cuba's emerging tourist industry has not only compromised the ideology of the revolution, but has in fact seen a return of a pre-revolution stratified society and parallel economies, one based on the peso and …
Analysis Of Cyclic Shallow-Water Carbonates: Cambrian Highland Peak Formation, Eastern Nevada, Robyn Allyn Howley
Analysis Of Cyclic Shallow-Water Carbonates: Cambrian Highland Peak Formation, Eastern Nevada, Robyn Allyn Howley
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Several methods of analysis were used to test the robustness of sea level signals recorded in Middle to lower Upper Cambrian shallow-water carbonate rocks in the southwestern United States and to refine stratigraphic correlation of this interval. Embedded Markov chain and cycle architectural analysis define the high-frequency accommodation signal, whereas cycle grouping pattern and facies proportions analysis reveals low-frequency sequence stratigraphic accommodation changes. Gamma analysis and Fischer plots were unsuccessful in deciphering the signature of high or low frequency signals; Six low-frequency accommodation events are present in the Middle to lower Upper Cambrian Highland Peak Formation. Each sequence is bounded …

A Framework For Secure Applications With Qos, Ajay Kanagala
A Framework For Secure Applications With Qos, Ajay Kanagala
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis we propose a solution to support Quality of Service (QoS) network communication transactions modeled on differentiated services and economic principles. We propose an enhanced user-level negotiation protocol where transactions are accomplished in a secure mode and where resource allocations are simple and fair. With the availability of inexpensive network monitoring hardware, any issue dealing with network security becomes a priority. Current networks must support multiple levels of service over a single network connection. Differentiated levels of service create new resource management problems for network middleware. Just as a first class passenger is willing to pay the premium …
