"Like Visions In My Head: Understanding The Formulation Of Student Perceptions Of The Value Of The Liberal Arts Experience, And The Impact Of This Process On College Choice, Margaret L. Drugovich May 2002

"Like Visions In My Head: Understanding The Formulation Of Student Perceptions Of The Value Of The Liberal Arts Experience, And The Impact Of This Process On College Choice, Margaret L. Drugovich

Student Scholarship

Tuition-dependent, private postsecondary institutions need a continuous and predictable stream of students to assure their fiscal viability. Liberal arts colleges, like all postsecondary education institutions, are vying for student s in an increasingly competitive marketplace. As premium price leaders, many liberal arts institutions have been forced to make deep cuts to their 'sticker price' in the form of tuition discounts in order to compete with one another as well as with state institutions that increasingly espouse their ability to simulate the small college experience. However, discounting, though perhaps popular and even necessary, cannot be a long-term solution. According to Lovett, …

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan May 2002

Foreword: Interdisciplinarity, Kathleen M. Sullivan

Michigan Law Review

In the beginning, there was law. Then came law-and. Law and society, law and economics, law and history, law and literature, law and philosophy, law and finance, statistics, game theory, psychology, anthropology, linguistics, critical theory, cultural studies, political theory, political science, organizational behavior, to name a few. The variety of extralegal disciplines represented in the books reviewed in this issue attests to this explosion of perspectives on the law in legal scholarship. This development makes clear that the vocation of the legal scholar has shifted from that of priest to theologian. No longer is a law professor successful by virtue …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone May 2002

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Data collected over an 11 year period were analyzed for behavioral constancy, reaction to environmental change, and the differential influence of environment and genetics in a group of captive chimpanzees using the framework of the Five Factor Model of Personality. Results suggested environment was a more influential factor in behavioral production, although expected reactions of specific individuals were not evidenced. Improvements upon this research include use of a more chimpanzee-specific personality model and more detailed data collection to support more precise conclusions regarding behavioral etiology.

Effects Of Electronic Communication On Culture Shock Of Spouses Of International Students, Diana Bennett

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Culture shock is a serious problem for spouses of international students. This recollection study looked at use of telephone, web phone, email, chat, and online newspapers as predictors for culture shock. Fifteen spouses of international students at a mid-Atlantic university were interviewed with the same rated questions asking them to recall how they felt: When they first arrived in the United States, during their first six months here, during their second six months here, during their third six months here, and at the time of the interview. For the same time periods, they were also asked how many times a …

Islamic Law And Ambivalent Scholarship, Khaled Abou El Fadl May 2002

Islamic Law And Ambivalent Scholarship, Khaled Abou El Fadl

Michigan Law Review

This book reminds me of the image of the arrogantly condescending and blustering tourist in Cairo who drifts into a store that has taken the trouble of prominently displaying the price of their commodities in nicely typed tags. Nevertheless, the tourist walks in, reads the price tag, and then proclaims, "Okay, what is the real price?" The poor store employee stares at him with incredulity, and simply repeats the price on the tag, and, in response, the tourist emits this knowing and smug smile as if saying, "I know you guys, you never mean what you say; everything in Arab …

Mexican American Persistence At A Hispanic-Serving Institution: Lessons And Anomalies In A 10-Year University Cohort, Alfredo Salinas May 2002

Mexican American Persistence At A Hispanic-Serving Institution: Lessons And Anomalies In A 10-Year University Cohort, Alfredo Salinas

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Higher education continues to be the most viable avenue for improvement in the lives of racial minorities. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has called for an increase in the number of Hispanics in higher education institutions in the state of Texas. Although there is a substantial amount of literature in higher education, only a limited amount pertains to special populations. This is even more pronounced for literature that investigates persistence. This study will contribute to the analysis of such factors that can be targeted to improve the college persistence and completion rate of Hispanics. The institution where this study …

Book Review: Spirit Beings And Sun Dancers: Black Hawk’S Vision Of The Lakota World By Janet Catherine Berlo, James D. Keyser May 2002

Book Review: Spirit Beings And Sun Dancers: Black Hawk’S Vision Of The Lakota World By Janet Catherine Berlo, James D. Keyser

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1880 the Lakota warrior Black Hawk drew a series of seventy-six ledger drawings in exchange for credit at William Caton’s Cheyenne River Reservation trade store. In 1994, these drawings were purchased for the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York. Working with Sioux elders, Janet Berlo has analyzed Black Hawk’s drawings in a beautiful book that will interest Plains scholars. As an artist, Black Hawk drew seventeen typical ledger art warfare scenes, but probably more valuable are the drawings of his visions, Sioux cosmology and ceremonies, and even enemy Crow warriors. He also drew seventeen natural history studies showing …

Mending The Sacred Hoop: Identity Enactment And The Occupation Of Wounded Knee, Sheryl L. Lindsley, Charles Braithwaite, Kristin L. Ahlberg May 2002

Mending The Sacred Hoop: Identity Enactment And The Occupation Of Wounded Knee, Sheryl L. Lindsley, Charles Braithwaite, Kristin L. Ahlberg

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

This account by Oglala holy man Black Elk of the 1890 US cavalry massacre of three hundred Sioux Indians, mainly women and children, helps us understand the rhetorical importance of the American Indian Movement's return to Wounded Knee eighty-three years later. The occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in 1973 by the leaders of the American Indian Movement (AIM) represented a culmination of frustration felt by Native Americans. Magazines as diverse as Time and National Review reported the incident as a staged "pseudo-event" designed to amplify the oppressor/oppressed relationship. News coverage of Wounded Knee included headlines of mockery: "Of Fallen …

Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox May 2002

Explaining Viking Expansion, Darrin M. Cox

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Current scholarship regarding Scandinavia has neglected to give all but a cursory glance at the factors involved in Viking expansion. This thesis studies and explains employment opportunities, political motives, and societal norms as separate, individual motives that perpetuated Scandinavian migration, conquest, and adventure from the eighth through the eleventh centuries AD. Afterwards, these investigations are used to describe the various and sometimes conflicting forces of expansion that led to the formation of the Danelaw in England circa AD 870. Over time, the eventual adoption of Christianity and feudal relationships within Scandinavia would bring expansion as well as the Viking Age …

Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus May 2002

Sensitivity Of State Aid Allocation To Measures Of Needs And Resources In Local Governments, Adam Dale Baus

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This analysis examines the sensitivity of state intergovernmental aid, per capita, to measures of resources, infrastructure, social services, social problems and demographics in Northern and Southern local governments in 1982 and 1992. Time-periods chosen are based on the potential for domestic policies born through new federalism to harm local governments through lesser amounts of available state aid. North and South are compared to account for possible regional differences. Regardless of region and time however, redistribution efforts to local governments with higher levels of need and lower levels of resources are not particularly good. Redistribution tendencies present in 1982 declined by …

Frequency Of Neutrophil Alloantigens By Polymerase Chain Reaction, Iman H. Al-Sheikh, Mohammed A. Al-Khalifa, Amjad S. Rahi

Saudi Medical Journal

OBJECTIVE: Neutrophil alloantigens are responsible for a number of immune clinical disorders such as neonatal alloimmune neutropenia, febrile transfusion reaction and transfusion related acute lung injury. Recent progress enabled typing of neutrophil antigens by deoxyribose nucleic acid based techniques. In this study we report for the first time the frequency distribution of human neutrophil antigen system-one in Saudis. METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 100 successive healthy Saudi male blood donors presenting to Regional Laboratory and Blood Bank, Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1997. Human neutrophil antigen typing was carried out using polymerase chain reaction-sequence specific primer method. RESULTS: …

The Secrets Of Self-Starvation, Zenobia C. Y. Chan, Joyce L. C. Ma May 2002

The Secrets Of Self-Starvation, Zenobia C. Y. Chan, Joyce L. C. Ma

Journal of International Women's Studies

This is a single case study for which a life history approach was adopted. The informant, a patient suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN), was specifically selected because of her particular circumstances. Three themes emerged from her narrative that accounted for self-starvation: saving money, reserving food and competing for slenderness. The paper explores these themes and closes by emphasizing the necessity of understanding the sensitive and untold story of a patient’s self-starvation in her cultural-familial context.

"Love Is Lak De Sea": Figurative Language In Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God., Kalina Saraiva De Lima May 2002

"Love Is Lak De Sea": Figurative Language In Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God., Kalina Saraiva De Lima

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The principal objective of this paper is to investigate the use of Hurston’s figurative language in the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. Metaphors, symbolism, and personification have always been present in the African American language. Hurston uses the richness of figurative language to depict the African American experience in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. Figurative language is observed in various instances in the novel, such as when the author places special importance on the porch and the “lies” told there. Other significant examples of figurative language include the kiss and the bloom. Hurston …
