Cranial Morphology Of European Upper Paleolithic Hominins And Other Pleistocene Populations, Paul J. Constantino Jan 2002

Cranial Morphology Of European Upper Paleolithic Hominins And Other Pleistocene Populations, Paul J. Constantino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The cranial morphology of European Upper Paleolithic hominins is analyzed and compared with crania from other populations including other Late Pleistocene groups, Neanderthals, and modern Holocene populations. The results of distance, cluster and principal component analyses as well as univariate tests indicate that the European Upper Paleolithic is most similar to other Late Pleistocene populations and to modern Europeans. Combined with the calculated degree of variation in each group, the evidence points to continuity from the Late Pleistocene to Holocene populations, but not from Neanderthals to the Upper Paleolithic. These results lend support to the Recent African Origin hypothesis which …

Crossing Multiple Worlds In Multicultural Literature: A Possible Worlds Reading Of Zora Neale Hurston, Gloria Naylor And Michelle Cliff, Craig Adrian Smith Jan 2002

Crossing Multiple Worlds In Multicultural Literature: A Possible Worlds Reading Of Zora Neale Hurston, Gloria Naylor And Michelle Cliff, Craig Adrian Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

A mimetic approach to multicultural texts assumes that literary representations are reflections of real life situations and persons. Moving beyond a mimetic approach, I argue that the multicultural works examined in this thesis present an odyssey: characters travel across cultural, political, spiritual, and imaginative space and readers follow those characters through their journeys. Applying possible worlds theory to literature written by African-American and Caribbean female writers allows a reading which never loses sight of the political or cultural ties to our actual world, but sees them as altered by the authors in all sorts of interesting ways.

End Of Race As We Know It: Slavery, Segregation, And The African American Quest For Redress, Paul Anthony Dottin Jan 2002

End Of Race As We Know It: Slavery, Segregation, And The African American Quest For Redress, Paul Anthony Dottin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This is a study of one of the most controversial public matters concerning race in America today: the African American reparations movement for slavery and segregation. This issue is hotly contested because racial identity and the relative status and well-being of ethnic groups in America, a configuration I refer to as "race as we know it," is inextricably linked to matters of prejudice, pride, property, and public policy both presently and historically. Any substantial shift in the relative position of blacks and whites, America's most iconically opposed groups, promises to alter fundamental dynamics between these two populations, effectively ending "race …

Examination Of Three Competing Hypotheses Concerning The Origin Of The Indo-European Language Family, Shannon Marie Workman Jan 2002

Examination Of Three Competing Hypotheses Concerning The Origin Of The Indo-European Language Family, Shannon Marie Workman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The thesis will examine three hypotheses which seek to explain the origin of the Indo-European language family. Each will be treated according to the following criteria: the specific data selected, how the data sets used in the hypotheses correlate to one another, the methodology used by the author(s), and how well the final conclusion correlates to the data. The thesis will also discuss how the Bantu and Romance languages spread. The mechanisms of dispersal of these two languages will be examined and the supporting data will be compared to the mechanisms of dispersal and the supportive data of the three …

The Greatest Problem With Which The Library Is Confronted: A Survey Of Academic Library Outreach To The Freshman Course, Cindy Pierard, Kathryn A. Graves

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

The Freshman Year Experience movement has created an excellent opportunity for academic library outreach. Its values, which include collaboration among various campus units charged with supporting student success and a focus on student mastery of key academic skills, correspond well with the objective of many college and university libraries: to become a more central part of the institution's educational mission. This chapter provides a discussion of academic library outreach to one of the movement's most significant components, the freshman course. The aim is to provide an overview of historic and contemporary trends in postsecondary freshman programming and corresponding library outreach …

Religious Syncretism As A Factor Ensuring Economic And Social Security In The Country, Yevhen Kharkovshchenko, Vitalii S. Nitsenko, Eugene Piletsky, Mariia Nesterova

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

The article points out the potential of religious syncretism to ensure the political, social and economic security of Ukraine. The interpretation of religious syncretism not only as a sociocultural phenomenon, but also as a process of formation of this phenomenon is substantiated. The study singled out the stage of interfaith dialogue from the process of religious syncretism, which should form the basis for mutual understanding of faiths. This stage is considered as a multi-level communication of churches with separate structural directions, including the communicative direction of the denomination-society, in particular, the issue of economic and social security, and interfaith communication. …
