This study examines factors of religiosity and fundamentalism that lead to sexist attitudes toward various women's issues. Analysis of data from the 1996 General Social Survey was implemented to ascertain the dependent variables: the Attitude toward Abortion Scale, the Women in Politics Scale, the Familial Roles Scale, the Attitude toward the Women's Movement Scale, Biology as a Reason for Women Taking Care of Children, God's Will as a Reason for Women Taking Care of Children, Importance of Women's Issues and Self-report Being Feminist. An Examination Of Albert Barnes' Handling Of The Bible In The Debate On Slavery In Mid-Nineteenth-Century America, Kenneth G. Cleaver
An Examination Of Albert Barnes' Handling Of The Bible In The Debate On Slavery In Mid-Nineteenth-Century America, Kenneth G. Cleaver
Faculty Dissertations
Albert Barnes was an influential leader among New School Presbyterians in mid-nineteenth-century America. As a beloved pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and as a biblical scholar whose commentaries are still widely used today, Barnes undertook an exhaustive study of the Bible to address the foremost social issue of his day--slavery. After considering most passages in the Bible being used in the discussion, he realized that a conclusive argument could not be made, which was based exclusively on proof-texts. Barnes challenged those involved in the discussion not to ignore the Bible or its ability to provide answers to …

Lucky Pennies And Four Leaf Clovers: Young Children's Understanding Of Superstitions, Christy Bryce
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The development of organized, explanatory systems of knowledge is an integral part of human nature; it allows us to categorize objects and events and to make predictions based on our experiences. In our society, the quest for answers to the questions "How?" and "Why?" begins early in life. By the preschool years, children are actively seeking and providing explanations for an abundance of physical and social events, and they are developing knowledge of causal forces at work in the environment (Bullock, Gelman, & Baillargeon, 1982; Rosengren & Hickling, 1999). Compositional Trends And Spatial Patterns Over A Quarter Century: Forest Dynamics Of Dobbs Park, Indiana, Nancy Hoalst Pullen
Compositional Trends And Spatial Patterns Over A Quarter Century: Forest Dynamics Of Dobbs Park, Indiana, Nancy Hoalst Pullen
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-five permanent plots were reexamined to identify and describe the spatial and temporal characteristics of Dobbs Park, an isolated old-growth forest stand in westcentral Indiana. The 3.6 ha stand was resurveyed in summer 2000, with all stems greater than 10 cm dbh measured, and accessions and deaths recorded. The results are compared to original data collected in summer 1974, with compositional and spatial patterns identified via GIS and spatial analysis. The stand has declined slightly in density from 342 stems/ha to 333.15 stems/hectare (-2.6%) while basal area (dominance) for the stand has increased from 23.6 m2/ha to 25.8 m2/ha (+8.8%) …
