Selling The Alaska Highway: Tourism And Landscape, Laura Lynne Pitkanen
Selling The Alaska Highway: Tourism And Landscape, Laura Lynne Pitkanen
Arctic and Northern Studies
Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the North. As a dynamic industry, tourism may exert powerful, often unforeseen pressures on the cultures, economies, resources, and landscapes of host communities. As a popular tourist corridor in the North, the Alaska Highway is enshrouded in a mythology based on frontier, hardship, and wilderness images. However, an examination of the Alaska Highway reveals that the tourism landscape contradicts this mythology. Indeed the tourism landscape is in the process of becoming commercial and homogenous in nature. While distinction in landscape is noted as a primary motivation for Alaska Highway travellers, more importantly, distinction …
Discoverers & Possessors: Symbolic Acts Of Possession And Spain's Struggle For Sovereignty On The North Pacific Coast, Timo C. Allan
Discoverers & Possessors: Symbolic Acts Of Possession And Spain's Struggle For Sovereignty On The North Pacific Coast, Timo C. Allan
Arctic and Northern Studies
Until the 18th century, the North Pacific coast of North America remained one of the last territories in the world unexplored by Europeans. As terra nullius, or land unclaimed by any Christian prince, this coastline became a coveted prize as Spanish, Russian, French, and British explorers raced to establish sovereignty on behalf of their respective monarchs. The use of symbolic acts of possession in the North Pacific and the indigenous reaction to those ceremonies has never been properly examined. Often dismissed as meaningless pageantry, symbolic acts were for centuries the principl means by which European powers established claims to territories …
Health In Predynastic Egypt: Using Skeletal Stress Indicators To Assess The Overall Health Of A Working Class Population In Hierakonpolis, Jeanette Matovich
Health In Predynastic Egypt: Using Skeletal Stress Indicators To Assess The Overall Health Of A Working Class Population In Hierakonpolis, Jeanette Matovich
Anthropology
The present project attempts to assess the overall health of a Predynastic Egyptian working class population, based on skeletal stress indicators. This study contributes to a growing knowledge base regarding the biological anthropology of Predynastic Egyptians. Information generated from this research may help address larger questions, such as: how do Predynastic Egyptian mortality profiles compare with each other, and with other groups from around the world? Fifty-three skeletons were examined from Hierakonpolis' HK43 cemetery. Data were collected according to conventional osteological methods. Most skeletal stress indicators observed were mild. Evidence of degenerative disease in adults reflected lifetimes of hard, physical …
The Tingmiukpuk Site (Kir-273): A Prehistoric Site Along The Killik River, Alaska, Aaron C. Robertson
The Tingmiukpuk Site (Kir-273): A Prehistoric Site Along The Killik River, Alaska, Aaron C. Robertson
Anthropology
Tingmiukpuk (KIR-273), a prehistoric archaeological site, lies in a dune field on the east bank of the Killik River in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve. The site consists of several surface scatters of cultural material on and around three large dune prominences. Field research was conducted during the summers of 1990, 1991, 1993, and 1999. Diagnostic artifacts and dates on surface faunal material suggest the presence of two archaeological components: one belonging to the American Paleoarctic tradition, and one to the Arctic Small Tool tradition. Artifacts and faunal material suggest that the site was used for processing …
About Time: Chronological Variation As Seen In The Burial Features At Ipiutak, Point Hope, Jennifer I. Newton
About Time: Chronological Variation As Seen In The Burial Features At Ipiutak, Point Hope, Jennifer I. Newton
Anthropology
The burials at Ipiutak, Point Hope, Alaska, are best known for their spectacular grave goods and burial practices, considered by the excavators to be suggestive of a 'ghost cult', and more recently to be evidence of social complexity. Collections from the National Museum of Denmark, the American Museum of Natural History, and the University of Alaska Museum are studied and re-inventoried, and burial features on the Ipiutak peninsula are re-mapped. Examination of burial practices reveals four burial types, defined in terms of the structure and organization of associated wood. Differences between burial types and variation in artifact inventories are ascribed …

Preliminary Report Of Animal Bones From Hrísheimur, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern
Preliminary Report Of Animal Bones From Hrísheimur, Mývatn District, Northern Iceland, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
In 2000 and 2001 the FSl / NABO project Landscapes of Settlement in Northern Iceland collected animal bones from the heavily eroded site of Hrísheimur south of lake Mývatn. The 2001 season produced a substantial archaeofauna from a 2 x 2 meter test excavation of a midden deposit that apparently fills a small sunken-feature structure. While further excavations are planned to collect more material and to better understand the deposit and site as a whole, it may be useful to provide an interim overview of the bone materials recovered from the largest context (003) of the midden deposit tested in …
