An Examination Of Online Qualitative Research Methods, Randall S. Dunn

Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is meant as an exploration into possible approaches to answering the following research question: how are educators in the Commonwealth of Virginia integrating the Virginia Technology Standards of Learning into the day-to-day classroom learning environment and curriculum as a whole? Traditional qualitative research methods and online and technology-based qualitative methods will be explored to determine possible techniques and best approaches. Weaknesses and strengths will be outlined. Finally, the placement of these two methodological approaches – traditional and online – will be placed into the continuum of accepted research paradigms.

Anxieties Of Impotence: Cuban Americas In New York City, Christina M. Tourino Jun 2002

Anxieties Of Impotence: Cuban Americas In New York City, Christina M. Tourino

English Faculty Publications

In her paper, "Anxieties of Impotence: Cuban Americas in New York City, " Christina Marie Tourino seeks a basis for comparison between Latin American literatures and Latino literatures of the United States. Such groups have rarely been compared in the past because they are considered part of the same literary "family." However, Tourino argues that owing to the flows of capital driven by global pressures, literatures between and among Latin Americans and Latinos hail from such culturally heterogeneous sites and are made over by so many relocations that they do call for comparative projects. Instead of comparing texts across national …

Selection Of Nesting Habitat By Sharptailed Grouse In The Nebraska Sandhills, Bart L. Prose, Brian S. Cade, Dale Hein Jun 2002

Selection Of Nesting Habitat By Sharptailed Grouse In The Nebraska Sandhills, Bart L. Prose, Brian S. Cade, Dale Hein

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

We evaluated nesting habitat selection (disproportionate use compared to availability) by plains sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus jamesi) on rangelands grazed by cattle (Bas taurus) relative to height, density, and heterogeneity of residual herbaceous vegetation remaining from previous growing seasons. Residual cover is critical for nesting sharp-tailed grouse and can be lacking on grazed rangelands. Aerial photography and a geographic information system were used to analyze residual cover height classes and several measures of residual cover heterogeneity in nest (n = 38) and random (n = 38) plots. Height classes corresponded to visual obstruction readings (YORs), the …

Creating In Our Own Image: Artificial Intelligence And The Image Of God, Noreen L. Herzfeld Jun 2002

Creating In Our Own Image: Artificial Intelligence And The Image Of God, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Theology Faculty Publications

There is remarkable convergence between twentieth-century interpretations of the image of God (imago Dei), what it means for human beings to be created in God's image, and approaches toward creating in our own image in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Both fields have viewed the intersection between God and humanity or humanity and computers in terms of either (1) a property or set of properties such as intelligence, (2) the functions we engage in or are capable of, or (3) the relationships we establish and maintain. Each of these three approaches reflects a different understanding of what …

Hopewell Archeology: Volume 5, Number 1, June 2002, Mark J. Lynott, Jennifer Pederson Weinberger, Jarrod Burks

United States National Park Service: Publications

1. Preliminary Report, 2001 Investigations, Hopeton Earthworks

Although the Hopewell mounds and earthworks of Ross County, Ohio, have been well known to the scientific community for more than 150 years, many simple and basic questions have yet to be answered about the sites, and about the people and culture who built them. Early archeological research focused on mounds and mortuary behavior (e.g., Squier and Davis 1848; Thomas 1894; Mills 1922; Moorehead 1922) and yielded a great deal of information about the artistic and ritual aspects of Hopewell life.

Recent trends in Hopewell research have emphasized settlement pattern analysis and the …

First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein Jun 2002

First Recipients Of Anthropological Doctorates In The United States, 1891-1930, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

This article seeks to show the origins of the professionalization of anthropology by examining early doctoral dissertations in this field and their authors. The bibliography consists of citations with biographical details of the authors, when known, of doctoral dissertations in anthropology from United States educational institutions up to 1930. One hundred twenty-four citations are given in all, representing 18 institutions. Forty-one of the dissertations were not written for degrees in anthropology. Besides documenting the existence of anthropological work outside recognized graduate programs of anthropology, the bibliography provides a demographic profile of anthropology and shows the distribution of subdiscipline concentrations and …

The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner Jun 2002

The Technicity Paradigm And Scientism In Qualitative Research, Carol J. Steiner

The Qualitative Report

This philosophical paper suggests that almost all academic research, including qualitative research, is conducted under the influence of a "technicity paradigm" which values objectivity, generalisability and rationality. This paper explores, from a Heideggerian perspective, the fundamental characteristics of research under the influence of technicity and discusses how these characteristics manifest in qualitative research. It includes a reflection on what qualitative research might be like if it could escape the influence of technicity and realise its potential for inclusive and relevant knowledge making.
