First Record And Habitat Notes For The Genus Lightiella (Crustacea, Cephalocarida, Hutchinsoniellidae) From The British Virgin Islands, Joel W. Martin, Donald B. Cadien, Todd L. Zimmerman

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The crustacean class Cephalocarida, as currently understood, is comprised of five genera and ten species (Hessler and Elofsson 1996, Hessler and Wakabara 2000). Although in some instances numerous specimens have been collected in a single locale (e.g., the nearly 120 specimens of Lightiella incisa Gooding, 1963 from Puerto Rico studied by Sanders and Hessler (1964), and the numerous specimens of Hutchinsoniella macracantha Sanders, 1955 now known from Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, see Hessler and Sanders 1973:193), most reports are based on very few specimens. For example, the original description of the genus Hutchinsoniella Sanders, 1955 was based on only eight specimens …

Aboriginal English Genres In Perth, Ian G. Malcolm Jan 2002

Aboriginal English Genres In Perth, Ian G. Malcolm

Research outputs pre 2011

Aboriginal Australia has a unique heritage of oral literature and Aboriginal people of all ages take delight in yarning. Despite the richness and contemporary relevance of this heritage, little is known in the wider Australian society about the oral discourse skills that are taken for granted in Aboriginal communities.

Although the art of oral narrative has developed over countless generations and by medium of Indigenous languages, previous studies (Malcolm 1994a, b; Malcolm and Rochecouste 2000; Rochecouste and Malcolm 2000) have shown that it is vigorously maintained in Aboriginal English.

The lack of general awareness of the verbal art of Aboriginal …

Postpartum Psychosis: A Legitimate Defense For Negating Criminal Responsibility?, Sandy Meng Shan Liu Jan 2002

Postpartum Psychosis: A Legitimate Defense For Negating Criminal Responsibility?, Sandy Meng Shan Liu

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Infanticide is the most prevalent violent crime committed by women and has occurred throughout history for various reasons including sacrifice, birth control, eugenics, shame, and fear of punishment for adultery. Postpartum mood disorders have been recognized as a legitimate mental illness since the fourth century, and approximately fifty to eighty percent of new mothers experience some degree of depression after giving birth. Postpartum depression can progress into psychosis so quickly that new mothers may not even notice impairment of thinking skills. Defendants face many problems when using postpartum psychosis as a defense. One of the challenges of presenting postpartum psychosis …

Community Dynamics And Diversity Of Ground Dwelling Arthropods Assemblages In A Maize Based Agroforestry System In Mtwapa, Coastal Kenya, Esther Kamunya Jan 2002

Community Dynamics And Diversity Of Ground Dwelling Arthropods Assemblages In A Maize Based Agroforestry System In Mtwapa, Coastal Kenya, Esther Kamunya

All Master’s Theses

The effect of diversification and intensification in agro ecosystems to arthropod diversity is not well understood, mainly because conservationists have greatly ignored agroecosystems, while most of the research work has been for a long time, directed towards the so called undisturbed systems like the natural forests. This study was intended to contribute towards evaluating relationships in agroecosystems and to assess the impacts of various cropping systems on the diversity and dynamics of soil dwelling arthropods. During the first phase of this study, Pitfall trapping was conducted every two weeks in all the plots from June 1999 to February 2000 and …

Probability And Statistics In The Legal Curriculum: A Case Study In Disciplinary Aspects Of Interdisciplinarity, Michael Townsend Jan 2002

Probability And Statistics In The Legal Curriculum: A Case Study In Disciplinary Aspects Of Interdisciplinarity, Michael Townsend

Articles

This Article considers interdisciplinarity and the legal curriculum in the context of probability and statistics. Section D of Part II begins the discussion by sketching some multidisciplinary, pluridisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches. Part III is the workhorse of this Article. The particular example used here is the well-known jury discrimination case of Castaneda v. Partida as described in Section A. This "case study" provides the basis for a crossdisciplinary experience that offers students an opportunity to think about law as a discipline. It is difficult for students to step back and look at law as a discipline when there is …

Defeating Environmental Law: The Geology Of Legal Advantage, William H. Rodgers, Jr. Jan 2002

Defeating Environmental Law: The Geology Of Legal Advantage, William H. Rodgers, Jr.

Articles

My talk today will: (1) introduce the metaphor of geology, (2) suggest to you that complexity has "gainers" as well as "losers," and (3) show you how environmental laws can be defeated by these twin engines of complexity and clever human adversaries.

Effects Of Selenium On Thyroid Hormone Levels In Sheep, Ahmet Ateşşahi̇n, İbrahi̇m Pi̇ri̇nçci̇, Feri̇t Gürsu, Gürkan Çikim

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the thyroid hormone levels in sheep experimentally treated with selenium were investigated. Twelve Akkaraman sheep were used in the investigation. Selenium was given intramuscularly at doses of 0.1 (Group 1) and 0.4 mg/kg (Group 2). The blood samples were taken from the jugular vein at 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 96 and 144 hours after the administration. Serum triiodotyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4), free triiodotironine (fT3) and free thyroxin (fT4) levels were determined using a hormone autoanalyzer. In the comparison between the groups, it was shown that serum T3 levels reached the maximum levels at the 96^{th} …
