A Game Theoretic Analysis Of U.S. Rice Exports Under Alternative Japanese And South Korean Policy Scenarios, Dae-Seob Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As a result of the Uruguay Round (UR), the impact on the international rice market is profound. In addition, another round of the WTO trade negotiations has started and the impacts of potential policy changes on rice trade are unknown. The major U.S. benefit of the UR has been the access to the Japanese market. However, the U.S. share of this import market has been unstable and the share of Korean rice market is zero percent. Therefore, this study attempts to analyze the potential implication of U.S. rice exports to Japan and Korea. The Japanese and Korean rice economies as …

Role Of Chondrocyte Apoptosis In The Pathogenesis Of Equine Osteoarthritis, Dae Young Kim Jan 2002

Role Of Chondrocyte Apoptosis In The Pathogenesis Of Equine Osteoarthritis, Dae Young Kim

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Osteoarthritis (OA), a non-inflammatory, degenerative disease of articular cartilages, is a common cause of poor performance and early retirement in equine athletes. Pathologically, OA is characterized by matrix degradation and decreased chondrocyte numbers. A mechanical stress is believed to be the major etiologic factor of OA development. Recent studies have indicated that apoptosis is responsible for hypocellularity in OA cartilage and that chondrocyte death by apoptosis could directly contribute to matrix degradation. Increased nitric oxide (NO), a free radical, has been implicated as a cause of chondrocyte apoptosis. No studies, however, have been performed on chondrocyte apoptosis in equine OA. …

Aspects Of The Behavioral Ecology, Life History, Genetics, And Morophology Of The Hawaiian Kuhliid Fishes, Lori Keene Benson Jan 2002

Aspects Of The Behavioral Ecology, Life History, Genetics, And Morophology Of The Hawaiian Kuhliid Fishes, Lori Keene Benson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Flagtails, members of the Genus Kuhlia, are Indo-Pacific fishes found in marine and freshwater habitats. Known locally as āholehole, they are important food fishes in the Hawaiian Islands and were often used by Hawaiians in traditional ceremonies. Local fishermen have noted the presence of two morphotypes in Hawai'i, although at the beginning of this study only one species, Kuhlia sandvicensis, was identified in the scientific literature. For this dissertation research, morphological and DNA studies of the two morphotypes determined that two species of the genus Kuhlia do exist in Hawai'i. Subsequently, Randall and Randall (2001) published a revision of this …

Experience-Based Language Acquisition: A Computational Model Of Human Language Acquisition, Brian Edward Pangburn Jan 2002

Experience-Based Language Acquisition: A Computational Model Of Human Language Acquisition, Brian Edward Pangburn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Almost from the very beginning of the digital age, people have sought better ways to communicate with computers. This research investigates how computers might be enabled to understand natural language in a more humanlike way. Based, in part, on cognitive development in infants, we introduce an open computational framework for visual perception and grounded language acquisition called Experience-Based Language Acquisition (EBLA). EBLA can “watch” a series of short videos and acquire a simple language of nouns and verbs corresponding to the objects and object-object relations in those videos. Upon acquiring this protolanguage, EBLA can perform basic scene analysis to generate …

Ontogeny And Intervals Of Development In Five Reef-Associated Species Of Blenny From The Northern Gulf Of Mexico (Teleostei: Blenniidae), James G. Ditty

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

I examined patterns and timing of ontogeny and relative growth in five species of blenny (Teleostei: Blenniidae) from the northern Gulf of Mexico by assigning a suite of discrete character state scores to ontogenetic events (10 external traits; 218 total specimens). This is the first study to evaluate developmental patterns in reef-associated fishes relative to the timing of metamorphosis and settlement by applying scaling techniques and statistical methods to quantify, differentiate, and select criteria for defining intervals of development across taxa. Blennies settle at a common state of ontogeny and share a common pattern of body and fin/cirrus growth. Three …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The goal of this dissertation research is to investigate the defense systems of strawberry plant by characterizing the genes and their products involved in plant disease-resistance. Pathogenesis-related proteins, including hydrolytic enzymes chitinases and â-1,3- glucanases, have been known to be induced in plants upon infection with various pathogens. Highest total chitinase activity was found in strawberry crown, whereas root, petiole, fruit, leaf, and runner showed successively lower activities. Chitinase isoform analysis showed that up to six acidic and two basic isoforms were present in various organs. The total chitinase activity was stable at 50oC. The pH optimum for chitinase activity …

Violence And The Scapegoat In American Film: 1967-1999, Paul E. Graham Iii Jan 2002

Violence And The Scapegoat In American Film: 1967-1999, Paul E. Graham Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study addresses the proliferation of cinematic violence since the demise of the MPAA’s Production Code in 1966. Bonnie and Clyde and The Wild Bunch were films that projected violence to comment on the civil fervent caused by the Vietnam War. Yet the floodgates these films opened allowed for virtually unlimited and graphic displays of bloodshed to redden big screens for the next three decades. Using the theories of René Girard, namely the scapegoating motif, this study proposes readings of film that, through cinematic ambiguity, contain humanitarian statements against violence by examining the consequences of using force to cause pain. …

The Effects Of Stimulant Medication On The Social Behavior Of Children With Adhd During Times Of Play, Robert, Jr. H. Larue Jan 2002

The Effects Of Stimulant Medication On The Social Behavior Of Children With Adhd During Times Of Play, Robert, Jr. H. Larue

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Psychomotor stimulants are the most commonly prescribed medications for the treatment of ADHD in children and adults. A vast literature has evolved concerning the efficacy and potential side effects of these drugs. Although stimulants are generally regarded as safe and effective, there is concern that potential problems may have been overlooked. Specifically, there is some literature indicating that, at least in some cases, stimulant medications may produce significant disruptions in social behavior. To investigate these effects, a number of different measurements were employed with preschool children, including direct observations during times of play, a social reinforcer assessment and a number …

The Future In Feminism : Reading Strategies For Feminist Theory And Science Fiction, Alcena Madeline Davis Rogan Jan 2002

The Future In Feminism : Reading Strategies For Feminist Theory And Science Fiction, Alcena Madeline Davis Rogan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Contemporary feminist theory, especially in its more dialectical manifestations, is read in this study as describing a relationship between present and future. In this reading, the work of feminist theory contains a “present;” that is, an articulation of the specific problem or question that it addresses. The work of feminist theory also contains a “future,” either implicit or explicit, and often both. An explicit “future” in feminist theory states a praxis-model or specific call-to-arms that claims political effectuality; claims that its implementation might help to ameliorate, in some way, the status quo of sexual politics. An implicit “future” in feminist …

Intrinsic Biodegradation Potential Of Crude Oil In Salt Marshes, Julius Enock Jan 2002

Intrinsic Biodegradation Potential Of Crude Oil In Salt Marshes, Julius Enock

LSU Master's Theses

Understanding the influence of different perturbations on the fate of spilled oil in marine ecosystems is useful in assessing the environmental impact and remedial investigation. The effect of flooding and spill recurrence on the fate of an experimental crude oil spill (2 L/m2) was investigated using salt marsh intact cores, incubated for about 3 months, by monitoring residual petroleum hydrocarbons, heterotrophic microbial activity (fluorescein diacetate assay) and soluble organic carbon (SOC). For the flooding study, biodegradation rate of crude oil (with half-lives varying between 16.50 and 49.51 days and turnover times between 23.81 and 71.43 days) and microbial …

Clear-Cutting Eden: Representations Of Nature In Southern Fiction, 1930-1950, Christopher B. Rieger Jan 2002

Clear-Cutting Eden: Representations Of Nature In Southern Fiction, 1930-1950, Christopher B. Rieger

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines how Southern literary representations of the natural world were influenced by, and influenced, the historical, social, and ecological changes of the 1930s and 1940s. Specifically, I examine the ways that nature is conceived of and portrayed by four authors of this era: Erskine Caldwell, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Zora Neale Hurston, and William Faulkner; through their works, I investigate the intersections of race, class, and gender with the natural environment. I argue that during this time of profound regional and national upheaval there exists a climate of professed binary oppositions and that these authors’ representations of nature in …

Narrative Patterns Of Racism And Resistance In The Work Of William Faulkner, Janet Elizabeth Barnwell Jan 2002

Narrative Patterns Of Racism And Resistance In The Work Of William Faulkner, Janet Elizabeth Barnwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Keeping in mind the complicated nature of race relations in the South during the segregation era, as well as the economic volatility of the time, and recognizing Faulkner's position as a white southern writer, this dissertation poses and attempts to answer a few specific questions regarding Faulkner's work. First, beginning with New Orleans Sketches and ending with Go Down, Moses, what texts seem most devoted to examining issues of race difference? Second, where in these texts does Faulkner most strikingly incorporate and then challenge racial stereotypes and cliches about the South? Third, working chronologically, how did Faulkner reconcile his position …

Acid bogs, one of the rare plant communities, are on the brink of extinction in the southeastern United States. This study uncovers what issues are at stake in land use, land development, and regulations of two specific areas in south Louisiana that contain this type of wetland. This is an educational project oriented toward development of methods and information related to planning and design for the use of wetland sites while still protecting them. A hypothesis is presented that a combination of education with land use guidelines, helpful resources and regulatory incentives may help slow the eradication of bogs in …

Endocrine And Reproductive Responses To Implants Of Deslorein Acetate In Horses, Carrie Ann Johnson Jan 2002

Endocrine And Reproductive Responses To Implants Of Deslorein Acetate In Horses, Carrie Ann Johnson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Four experiments were performed to study the effects of the gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) analog, deslorelin acetate (Ovuplant™), on endocrine and reproductive characteristics in mares. The first experiment tested whether anecdotal field reports of Ovuplant causing extended interovulatory intervals would be detectable under controlled, experimental conditions. The use of Ovuplant to hasten ovulation in 13 mares, compared to 12 controls, increased (P < 0.05) the interovulatory interval by 6.2 d and suppressed (P < 0.05) plasma concentrations of both luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) for approximately 11 d. Two mares receiving Ovuplant did not return to estrus within 30 d. In the second experiment, 10 control mares and 10 mares induced to ovulate with Ovuplant were administered GnRH (50 μg) on d 1, 4, 7, and 10 after ovulation. Again, treated mares had a longer (4.4 d, P < 0.05) interovulatory interval and suppressed LH and FSH concentrations in daily plasma samples. The gonadotropin response to GnRH was lower (P < 0.05) in the deslorelin mares on d 1, 4, and 7, indicating a lack of pituitary responsiveness. In the third experiment, 9 stallions and 12 steroid-treated geldings were used to determine if males were potential models for studying the deslorelin-induced gonadotropin suppression. In both cases, treatment with Ovuplant caused an initial rise in both gonadotropins followed by suppression for about 14 d. In the last experiment, 21 mares were used to determine if multiple doses of deslorelin would cause complete ovarian shutdown. Mares received either sham injections, three Ovuplant implants on the first day, or one implant per day for 3 d (n = 7 per group). Treatment with multiple deslorelin implants increased (P < 0.05) the interovulatory interval by 14.8 d and suppressed LH and FSH concentrations for approximately 25 d, however no mares exhibited complete ovarian shutdown. In conclusion, deslorelin acetate implants in horses in the form of Ovuplant induce short-term increases in LH and FSH secretion followed by long-term suppression of these concentrations and an insensitivity of the pituitary to GnRH. In a small percentage of mares, long-term ovarian shutdown is a possibility.

The Cultural Ecology Of Pastoralism In Eritrea: A Geographical Inquiry, Woldetensae Tewolde Kahsaye Jan 2002

The Cultural Ecology Of Pastoralism In Eritrea: A Geographical Inquiry, Woldetensae Tewolde Kahsaye

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation is an investigative cultural ecologic study of the pastoralists in the eastern and northwestern lowlands of Eritrea. Tigre, Hidareb, and Rashaida herders were identified and studied throughout the fieldwork. These ethnic groups constitute people with defined cultural and economic characteristics inhabiting environments characterized by marked seasonal variations in precipitation. Their livelihoods are almost wholly dependent on livestock forming types of modes of production identified as pure-pastoralism and agro-pastoralism. The distinction between these two forms lies primarily in the type of economic strategy pursued (i.e., wholly livestock-based economy versus livestock-crop economy) as well as in the pattern of pastoral …

The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of feeding chlamydospores of the fungus at a dosage of 5 x 105 spores/kg of BW to ewe/lamb pairs (Trial 1) and weaned lambs (Trial 2) for a total of 17 and 8 …

Neo-Onnagata: Professional Cross-Dressed Actors And Their Roles On The Contemporary Japanese Stage, William Hamilton Armstrong Iv Jan 2002

Neo-Onnagata: Professional Cross-Dressed Actors And Their Roles On The Contemporary Japanese Stage, William Hamilton Armstrong Iv

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Neo-Onnagata: Professional Cross-dressed Actors and Their Roles on the Contemporary Japanese Stage explores the representation of male and female gender in the contemporary Japanese theatre. I particularly discuss a specialized subset of Japanese actor: the neo-onnagata, a contemporary theatre counterpart to Japan's highly stylized classical kabuki tradition of cross-dressed representation. This dissertation represents my attempt to provide these basic aims: to situate the contemporary Japanese cross-dresser in Japanese tradition, to show how cross-dressing acts as a sharp social commentary and mirror, and to introduce some little-represented cross-dressing actors of the contemporary Japanese stage to the academic community at large. In …

For the text recall variable, a cloze test was administered at the end of each song treatment to determine total words recalled. Students from one of the music groups heard the melody of the song while testing. For the din variable, students were asked to report on the amount of this phenomenon experienced. Data was collected …

Aspects Of Cognition In Human Mate Selection, Michael J. Stasio Jan 2002

Aspects Of Cognition In Human Mate Selection, Michael J. Stasio

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Evolutionary perspectives on human mating have provided testable hypotheses regarding what qualities people desire in their mates and why they want them. One study was conducted to replicate previous findings in mate preference using a more sophisticated paired comparison methodology to develop scales. Paired comparison scaling generally replicated gender differences in mate preferences consistent with evolutionary predictions. Further, decision-making reaction time (ms) suggested the presence of an underlying psychological continuum of selection criteria. A series of studies were then conducted applying the information processing approach (IPA) to investigate attention and knowledge organization in mate preference. The dot-probe paradigm was used …
