Faculty Publications

Filarial infections have been associated with the development of a strongly polarized Th2 host immune response and a severe impairment of mitogen-driven proliferation and type 1 cytokine production in mice and humans. The role of this polarization in the development of the broad spectra of clinical manifestations of lymphatic filariasis is still unknown. Recently, data gathered from humans as well as from immunocompromised mouse models suggest that filariasis elicits a complex host immune response involving both Th1 and Th2 components. However, responses of a similar nature have not been reported in immunologically intact permissive models of Brugia infection. Brucella abortus-killed …

Strong Founder Effect In Drosophila Pseudoobscura Colonizing New Zealand From North America, J. Reiland, S. Hodge, Mohamed A.F. Noor

Faculty Publications

The North American native species Drosophila pseudoobscura was first identified in New Zealand in the last few decades. Here, we have studied the genetic consequences of its spread across the Pacific Ocean. Using 10 microsatellites that are highly variable in North American populations, we found that the New Zealand population has substantially fewer alleles, a much lower average heterozygosity, and significantly different allele frequencies at these loci. We have discussed the relative sensitivity of these parameters for detecting the founding event. X-linked loci were more strongly differentiated between continents than autosomal loci, as reflected by larger changes in allele frequencies …

In Her Husband’S Family: A Newly Wed Woman’S Expectations And Her New Family’S Attitudes In Rural Assam, India, Dilip K. Medhi

Journal of International Women's Studies

From the introduction:

Until recently, living in a joint family system was typical among Hindus and members of other religious groups in India. Living in an extended joint family was also a common practice. However, joint family groups and extended joint family living are now relatively rare, due to India’s economic and social developments over the past four decades or so. Currently, the most common family arrangement is that of the nuclear family, comprised of a father, mother and their children. In rural areas, this nuclear family unit operates within a number of more traditional expectations and arrangements, however. Within …

The US National Science Foundation has established a program to create a National Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology Education Digital Library (NSDL). One of the subsidiary NSDL libraries under development is the National Civil Engineering Educational Resources Library (NCERL). The first phase of NCERL is the creation and collection of digital resources in three areas of civil engineering—geotechnical (soil), rock, and water engineering (GROW). The concept of interactivities guides the design, development, and evaluation efforts of the GROW digital collection. This article describes the salient features of GROW, defines and discusses interactivities as an emerging, integral part of teaching and …

Historical Perspectives On Violence Against Women, Vivian C. Fox Nov 2002

Historical Perspectives On Violence Against Women, Vivian C. Fox

Journal of International Women's Studies

Three great bodies of thought have influenced western society’s views and treatment of women: Judeo-Christian religious ideas, Greek philosophy and the Common Law legal code. All three traditions have, by and large, assumed patriarchy as natural – that is male domination stemming from the view of male superiority. As part of the culture perpetuated by these ideologies, violence towards women was seen as a natural expression of male dominance. This paper contains three main themes. The first establishes patriarchy as an early pattern of military societies and the subsequent emergence of the Judeo-Christian, Greek and legal cultural paradigm as ideological …

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein Nov 2002

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …

Simulation Study Of Chemical Inhibition Modeling, Pali Sen, Mary Anderson

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The combined effects of the activities of different chemicals are of interest of this study. We simulate for the synthetic data, and fit experimental data for three models and estimate the parameters. We assess the fit of the synthetic data and the experimental data by comparing the coefficients of variation for the parameter estimates and identify the best model for the inhibition process.

On The Estimation Of Binomial Success Probability With Zero Occurrence In Sample, Mehdi Razzaghi Nov 2002

On The Estimation Of Binomial Success Probability With Zero Occurrence In Sample, Mehdi Razzaghi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The problem of estimating the probability of a rare event when the sample shows no incidence of the event is considered. Several methodologies based on various statistical techniques are described and their relative performances are investigated. A decision theoretic approach for estimation of response probability when the sample contains zero responses is examined in depth. The properties of each method are discussed and an example from teratology is used to provide illustration and to demonstrate the results.

Preference And Perceived Danger In Field/Forest Settings, Thomas R. Herzog, Glenn E. Kutzli Nov 2002

Preference And Perceived Danger In Field/Forest Settings, Thomas R. Herzog, Glenn E. Kutzli

Peer Reviewed Articles

The authors investigated preference, perceived danger, and fear for a sample of 70 field/forest settings. Predictor variables included perception-based variables (visual access, penetration, movement ease), information-based variables (mystery, concealment, refuge), and variables thought to intervene between concealment and danger (entrapment, rearview concern). All variables were rated by independent groups. Danger and fear were strongly positively correlated for these settings, but preference and danger had a more modest negative correlation. Factor analysis of the strongly inter-correlated predictor variables yielded two factors, interpreted as Visibility and Locomotor Access. Both factors were positive predictors of preference and negative predictors of danger. Further analyses suggested …

Mechanical Properties Of Corn And Soybean Meal, Marek Molenda, Michael D. Montross, Jozef Horabik, Ira Joseph Ross Nov 2002

Mechanical Properties Of Corn And Soybean Meal, Marek Molenda, Michael D. Montross, Jozef Horabik, Ira Joseph Ross

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Ground corn and soybean meal are common ingredients in feed mixes. The knowledge of their mechanical properties is important to the feed manufacturer and consumer. Changes in these properties can lead to abnormally high or low levels of active ingredients in finished feed, thus decreasing its quality. Mechanical properties of wheat, corn meal, and soybean meal were investigated using a modified direct shear apparatus. The moisture content (wet basis), uncompacted bulk density, and particle density were: 10.4%, 733 kg/m3, and 1410 kg/m3 for soft red winter wheat; 11.4%, 583 kg/m3, and 1350 kg/m3 for …

Freedom Is To Confinement As Twilight Is To Dusk: The Unfortunate Logic Of Sexual Predator Statutes, Julia C. Walker Nov 2002

Freedom Is To Confinement As Twilight Is To Dusk: The Unfortunate Logic Of Sexual Predator Statutes, Julia C. Walker

Missouri Law Review

This Law Summary begins with a brief overview of the clinical treatment of sexual predators. The clinical background section enhances the discussion of legislation and jurisprudence because the adjudication of an individual as a sexually violent predator, in many states, involves testimony form medical experts and findings as to the individual’s ability to control his behavior, and, consequently, the likelihood that he will re-offend if he is released. This Law Summary then describes the legislative and judicial responses to sexual predators as well as the United States Supreme Court’s interpretation of sexually violent predator statutes and its declaration of their …

Election 2000: Aarp Portrayals Of Presidential Candidates And Issues, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

The 2000 United States presidential election was one of the closest in history, and issues of importance to older Americans such as Social Security, prescription drugs, and taxes were front and center in the national debate. This article examines how AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, portrayed the candidates and issues through its two publications: AARP Bulletin and Modern Maturity.

The 2000 United States presidential election was one of the closest in history (Kranish & Johnson, 2000). Additionally, throughout the summer and fall of 2000, poll data suggested a split electorate (Whitman, 2000). Issues of importance to older …

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Mapping The Domains Of The New Interactionist Paradigm, Douglas T. Kenrick, Jon K. Maner, Jon Butner, Norman P. Li, D. Vaughn Becker, Mark Schaller Nov 2002

Dynamical Evolutionary Psychology: Mapping The Domains Of The New Interactionist Paradigm, Douglas T. Kenrick, Jon K. Maner, Jon Butner, Norman P. Li, D. Vaughn Becker, Mark Schaller

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Dynamical systems and evolutionary theories have both been proposed as integrative approaches to psychology. These approaches are typically applied to different sets of questions. Dynamical systems models address the properties of psychological systems as they emerge and change over time; evolutionary models address the specific functions and contents of psychological structures. New insights can be achieved by integrating these two paradigms, and we propose a framework to begin doing so. The framework specifies a set of six evolutionarily fundamental social goals that place predictable constraints on emergent processes within and between individuals, influencing their dynamics over the short-term, and across …

The Sociophysiology Of Caring In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Herbert M. Adler Nov 2002

The Sociophysiology Of Caring In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Herbert M. Adler

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

The emotional investment required to construct a caring doctor-patient relationship can be justified on humane grounds. Can it also be justified as a direct physiologic intervention? Two lines of evidence point in this direction. People in an empathic relationship exhibit a correlation of indicators of autonomic activity. This occurs between speakers and responsive listeners, members of a coherent group, and bonded pairs of higher social animals. Furthermore, the experience of feeling cared about in a relationship reduces the secretion of stress hormones and shifts the neuroendocrine system toward homeostasis. Because the social engagement of emotions is simultaneously the social engagement …
