The Political Personality Of U.S. President George W. Bush, Aubrey Immelman

Psychology Faculty Publications

This paper presents the results of an indirect assessment of the personality of U.S. president George W. Bush, conducted 1998–2000 from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.

Psychodiagnostically relevant data regarding Bush was extracted from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with Axis II of DSM–IV.

The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed in accordance with interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality Styles manuals. Bush was found to be …

Design And Operation Of A Pilot Plant For Biodiesel Production From Triglycerides, Balasubramaniam Karthikeyan

Masters Theses

"In the wake of the events of September 11th 2001, the quest to relieve the nation’s dependence on petroleum fuels have taken a new urgency, there is a renewed interest in use of renewable biogenic fuels in particular -- the “biodiesel.” Biodiesel generally refers to fatty acid methyl esters of monohydric alcohols -- predominantly the methyl alcohol.

The principal sources of fatty acids are vegetable oils - soybean oil and canola oil. However, there are other “cheaper” sources of fatty acids that include beef tallow, poultry fats, pork fats and the used cooking oils. The first two are available in …

Mechanical Response Of Nets Of Graphical Objects, Rakesh Kumar Bajaj Jan 2002

Mechanical Response Of Nets Of Graphical Objects, Rakesh Kumar Bajaj

Masters Theses

"This research produces networks of graphical objects that respond to human manipulation in a fashion that would be deemed physically reasonable. That is, a graphical network is given a mechanics-like behavior in the presence of the human interaction. In this approach, nonlinear models replace commonly used linear models to mimic physical reality better. Software solutions are provided via a class library useful for such interactive visual modeling"--Abstract, page iii.

Strategies For Evangelizing The Upper-Class People In Ghana, Ampofo Benjamin Akyiano Jan 2002

Strategies For Evangelizing The Upper-Class People In Ghana, Ampofo Benjamin Akyiano

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The Seventh-day Adventist Church, which began its ministry in Ghana in 1888, is experiencing difficulty evangelizing upper-class people. The traditional method of soul-winning, public evangelism, has been successful to evangelize middle and lower social classes but not the wealthy and well-educated class. Currently, the church and the upper-class minority are far apart. The church must update its evangelistic methods to reach all classes to finish the gospel commission in Ghana.

Method

This study presents Ghana's upper-class, their social characteristics, lifestyles, world-views, population, and social and religious groups. Interviews and questionnaires were used to discover the factors that hinder the …

Kitchener's Volunteers, Peter Brauer Jan 2002

Kitchener's Volunteers, Peter Brauer

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

The fourth of August 1914 was a day of jubilation throughout Britain. German armies, numbering in the millions, had overrun Belgian border stations the previous day and were advancing unchecked across the frontier. As the morning progressed, a buzz of enthusiasm began to grow. News placards throughout Britain broadcast the news of the German invasion to the eager public from every street corner. Those British in the big cities were first to hear. From London to Birmingham, Manchester to Cardiff, and Edinburgh to Belfast, people gathered to hear the news. By noon, Trafalgar Square was packed end to end with …

Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski Jan 2002

Vicarious Traumatization And Its Impact On The Pennsylvania Child Welfare System, Jo Ann Jankoski

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Although many studies have addressed burnout, secondary trauma, and job satisfaction among child welfare workers throughout the United States, a review of the current and available literature revealed limited research addressing the impact of vicarious trauma and its relationship to worker retention, recruitment, and job satisfaction. This study was conducted within the context of traumatology theory and examined how vicarious trauma affects child welfare workers and to what degree vicarious trauma has had an impact on their collective community, the child welfare system. The research question that guided this study was: How does vicarious trauma affect child welfare workers and …

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Arsenic, R. Stephen Fisher Jan 2002

Groundwater Quality In Kentucky: Arsenic, R. Stephen Fisher

Information Circular--KGS

Arsenic is a naturally occurring element found in low concentrations in rocks, soils, water, plants, and animals (Nriagu, 1994 a, b). In Kentucky, arsenic is commonly found in iron sulfide minerals associated with coal deposits and black shales. Arsenic is released when iron sulfides oxidize during weathering. Once released, it is readily sorbed onto iron oxides and iron oxyhydroxides, which limits arsenic concentrations in the near-surface environment.

A Test Of The Ideal Free Distribution In Panhandling Humans, Leann Louise Milinder Jan 2002

A Test Of The Ideal Free Distribution In Panhandling Humans, Leann Louise Milinder

Doctoral Dissertations

The Ideal Free Distribution (Fretwell and Lucas, 1970), an optimization model from behavioral ecology, predicts that a group of animals will distribute themselves across habitats with unequal resources such that all animals have equal success rates. The six experiments of this dissertation demonstrated that humans conform to the IFD with about the same sensitivity as animals and respond similarly when assumptions of the model are violated. The present study also revealed that cooperation, and its effect on the functional size of the foraging unit, may be an important factor in understanding the distribution of social foragers.

Experiments 1 and 2 …

Transgenic Manipulation Of Polyamine Metabolism In Poplar, Pratiksha Bhatnagar Jan 2002

Transgenic Manipulation Of Polyamine Metabolism In Poplar, Pratiksha Bhatnagar

Doctoral Dissertations

Polyamines are low molecular weight polycations found in all living organisms. They are involved in plant stress response and development. The study was aimed at analyzing the effects of altered polyamine metabolism on the polyamine and related pathways in transformed poplar cells overexpressing a mouse odc cDNA under the control of 2X 35S CaMV promoter. The transgenic cells (line 2E) showed elevated levels of mouse ornithine decarboxylase enzyme activity, several fold higher amounts of putrescine, a small increase in spermidine, and a small reduction in spermine as compared with non-transgenic (NT) cells. The conversion of labeled ornithine into putrescine was …

Principles For Water, Andrew P. Morriss, Bruce Yandle, Terry L. Anderson Jan 2002

Principles For Water, Andrew P. Morriss, Bruce Yandle, Terry L. Anderson

Faculty Scholarship

Water issues are often contentious. How much water can one individual use? What must the water quality of water returned from use be? How much water must be allocated to uses such as maintaining sufficient instream flows for aquatic species? For the last century, the United States has largely such answered questions through command and control regulatory schemes rather than through markets and common law dispute resolution processes. The choice of regulation by institutions over other mechanisms has meant a reliance on centralized decisionmaking and a rejection of both the market's more decentralized institutions and the common law.

Recently, water …

Trademark Exhaustion In The European Union: Community-Wide Or International--The Saga Continues, Irene Calboli Jan 2002

Trademark Exhaustion In The European Union: Community-Wide Or International--The Saga Continues, Irene Calboli

Faculty Scholarship

This Article analyzes the principle of "trademark exhaustion" or "first-sale rule" in the European Union (EU), with particular attention to the language and different interpretations of Article 7(1) of the First Council Directive 89 104 EEC of December 21, 1988. Traditionally, most jurisdictions define the extent of trademark exhaustion as either "national" or "international" exhaustion, depending on whether the rights granted by a mark are considered exhausted only in the domestic territory or also in foreign jurisdictions. Because of its nature as a regional integration of sovereign countries, the EU has historically favored a compromising approach toward the issue, and …
