From Benaras To Leh - The Trade And Use Of Silk-Brocade, Monisha Ahmed Jan 2002

From Benaras To Leh - The Trade And Use Of Silk-Brocade, Monisha Ahmed

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

A weaver in Benaras sits at his pit loom meticulously creating a textile piece of Mahakala, the god of protection for Buddhists.

A lama at the festival (’cham) at Hemis monastery performs the religious dance, the Mahakala image on his apron (pang-kheb) gazing out at the devotees as he pirouettes around the courtyard.

The two descriptions given above demonstrate the beginning and end of the journey of silkbrocades from Benaras to Leh. This paper looks at the historical context of the trade in silkbrocades from Benaras to Leh, and discusses how this trade first started. It …

Wesley Simpson: Designer, Stylist And Entrepreneur, Lynn Felsher

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Over 20 years ago, The Museum at FIT received an anonymous gift of approximately 165 small textile samples and 27 scarves from the company, Wesley Simpson Custom Fabrics, Inc. The textiles dating from the late 1930s through the 1940s were designed for moderately priced women’s apparel. Printed on rayon crepe grounds, they were typical of the period, loose painterly florals, paisleys, conversationals, and small geometric, abstract and stripe patterns on light-colored grounds or discharge printed on dark grounds. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Brooklyn Museum of Art also have substantial holdings of Wesley Simpson Custom Fabrics, and an …

Silk In Ancient Nubia: One Road, Many Sources, Nettie K. Adams, William S. Webb Jan 2002

Silk In Ancient Nubia: One Road, Many Sources, Nettie K. Adams, William S. Webb

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Silk in ancient Africa? Most of us think of ancient Africans as members of a tribe, living by subsistence farming or herding, in villages of grass houses. But Nubia, the ancient Kush, located along the Nile in southern Egypt and the northern part of the Sudan, (Fig.l) was inhabited by an African people who, by 1800 BC, had developed their own high civilization. The Kushites were suppliers of ivory, ebony, gold, ostrich feathers, animal skins, and slaves to ancient Egypt and elsewhere in the Mediterranean world. In exchange they received a wide variety of manufactured goods.

By the fourth century …

From Court To Convent: A Silk Embroidered Sampler From Colonial Mexico, Bobbie Sumberg Jan 2002

From Court To Convent: A Silk Embroidered Sampler From Colonial Mexico, Bobbie Sumberg

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Silk appears frequently in many Mexican textiles and garments such as rebozos, skirts, and huipils or blouses. In this paper I discuss a different tradition, that of sampler embroidery in the urban style.

Yrene Escandon was reported to be a lady in waiting for Empress Carlotta, who reigned in Mexico with her husband Emperor Maximilien from 1 863-1867. During this time and before entering a convent after her service she and some friends embroidered a sampler replete with floral, religious, animal, and bird motifs. Using this remarkable piece in the collection of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa …

The Impact Of Silk On Ottonian And Salian Manuscripts, Stephen Wagner Jan 2002

The Impact Of Silk On Ottonian And Salian Manuscripts, Stephen Wagner

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

In keeping with the theme of the symposium's title, "Silk Roads, Other Roads," the medieval roads that this essay will travel converge in a number of ways. Most importantly, two distinctive art forms came together for a brief period in Germany during the tenth and eleventh centuries, the period of Ottonian and Salian rule. The two products, silk and illuminated manuscripts shared important qualities. Not only were they among the most luxurious objects of the middle ages, but they also assisted bishops and rulers advance their political programs. This phenomenon developed as a result of increased interaction with a major …

Mice Deficient In Tnf Receptors Are Protected Against Dopaminergic Neurotoxicity: Implications For Parkinson’S Disease, Krishnan Sriram, Joanna M. Matheson, Stanley A. Benkovic, Diane B. Miller, Michael I. Luster, James P. O’Callaghan Jan 2002

Mice Deficient In Tnf Receptors Are Protected Against Dopaminergic Neurotoxicity: Implications For Parkinson’S Disease, Krishnan Sriram, Joanna M. Matheson, Stanley A. Benkovic, Diane B. Miller, Michael I. Luster, James P. O’Callaghan

United States Public Health Resources

The pathogenic mechanisms underlying idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD) remain enigmatic. Recent findings suggest that inflammatory processes are associated with several neurodegenerative disorders, including PD. Enhanced expression of the proinflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, has been found in association with glial cells in the substantia nigra of patients with PD. To determine the potential role for TNF-α in PD, we examined the effects of the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), a dopaminergic neurotoxin that mimics some of the key features associated with PD, using transgenic mice lacking TNF receptors. Administration of MPTP to wild-type (+/+) mice resulted in a time-dependent expression of TNF-α …

Wyoming Toad (Bufo Baxteri), R. Andrew Odum, Paul Stephen Corn Jan 2002

Wyoming Toad (Bufo Baxteri), R. Andrew Odum, Paul Stephen Corn

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Historically, Wyoming toads (Bufo baxteri) were abundant in the vicinity of Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming (Baxter, 1952; Corn, 1991), where they were found in the flood plains of the Big and Little Laramie rivers (Stebbins, 1985), an area of only 2,330 km2 (Lewis et al., 1985). A rapid decline was observed in the mid-1970s (Lewis et al., 1985) when they disappeared from most of their range. Surveys in the early 1980s yielded few animals, and Lewis et al. f 1985) reported their possible extinction in 1983. Wyoming toads were listed as Endangered under the Endangered Species Act …

Experimental Measurements Of Stretching Fields In Fluid Mixing, G. A. Voth, G. H. Haller, Jerry P. Gollub Jan 2002

Experimental Measurements Of Stretching Fields In Fluid Mixing, G. A. Voth, G. H. Haller, Jerry P. Gollub

Physics Faculty Scholarship

The mixing of an impurity into a flowing fluid is an important process in many areas of science, including geophysical processes, chemical reactors, and microfluidic devices. In some cases, for example periodic flows, the concepts of nonlinear dynamics provide a deep theoretical basis for understanding mixing. Unfortunately, the building blocks of this theory, i.e. the fixed points and invariant manifolds of the associated Poincaré map, have remained inaccessible to direct experimental study, thus limiting the insight that could be obtained. Using precision measurements of tracer particle trajectories in a two-dimensional fluid flow producing chaotic mixing, we directly measure the time-dependent …

Ordered Clusters And Dynamical States Of Particles In A Vibrated Fluid, Greg A. Voth, Ben Bigger, Mark R. Buckley, Jerry P. Gollub

Physics Faculty Scholarship

Reports the discovery and explanation of ordered arrangements of particles that are immersed in a fluid. When they move with respect to the fluid, dynamical forces arise that are mediated by the fluid. These forces lead to self-assembly of structures. --author-supplied description

Federal Courts, Magistrate Judges, And The Pro Se Plaintiff, Lois Bloom, Helen Hershkoff Jan 2002

Federal Courts, Magistrate Judges, And The Pro Se Plaintiff, Lois Bloom, Helen Hershkoff

Faculty Articles

The literature on access to justice generally uses the term "legal assistance" to mean the provision of counsel, whether subsidized by the government or compensated by contingency fee or other arrangement, to a party who cannot afford representation. Access to justice, however, should also entail other forms of legal assistance, including a court structure that responds fairly and efficiently to claimants who lack the legal equipage needed to present their cases in an effective way. In this Article, we describe various institutional adaptations made by one federal district court in response to the increasing number of claims filed by pro …

Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa Murray Jan 2002

Whatever Happened To G.I. Jane?: Citizenship, Gender And Social Policy In The Postwar Era, Melissa Murray

Faculty Articles

In this Article, I argue that the GI Bill is consistent with the social welfare policies of the New Deal period, in particular the Social Security Act of 1935, and so should be examined within the analytical framework established by scholars like Linda Gordon and Theda Skocpol in their studies of the Social Security Act's social welfare programs. Although the Bill is gender-neutral on its face, it was framed by normative assumptions about military participation and work that ensured that it was socially understood to benefit male veterans.

Eisgruber's House Of Lords, Jeremy Waldron Jan 2002

Eisgruber's House Of Lords, Jeremy Waldron

Faculty Articles

Professor Eisgruber, in my opinion, succeeds in rebutting originalist and naive textualist approaches to the United States Constitution. He is right, I think, in arguing that moral judgments-judgments about justice, for example, and about the rights that people ought to have against one another are inescapable in constitutional law. And if he were to make the case-which in the book he rather assumes than argues for-that many of the issues on which the Constitution instructs us to make moral judgments are issues on which sound politics requires moral judgment, I would be inclined to agree with that too. What I …

Human Rights Treaties And The U.S. Constitution, David Golove Jan 2002

Human Rights Treaties And The U.S. Constitution, David Golove

Faculty Articles

Much of the focus of this Symposium has been on the exportation of U.S. laws and procedural practices to the rest of the world. I suspect that this focus will seem quite natural to most Americans, who are accustomed to thinking that our legal system, especially our constitutional commitment to fundamental rights, provides a model that other countries would be well advised to emulate. This confident, perhaps arrogant, self-conception as a moral beacon for the rest of the world has deep roots in U.S. history and seems as strong today as it has ever been. In contrast, many Americans are …

Digging Up The Bones Of The Past: Colonial And Indigenous Interplay In Winona Laduke's Last Standing Woman, Eclt Admin

In decolonization, there is the need of a complete calling in question of the colonial situation. If we wish to describe it precisely, we might find it in the well-known words: “The last shall be first and the first last.” Decolonization is the putting into practice of this sentence. That is why, if we try to describe it, all decolonization is successful. —Frantz Fanon, Wretched of the Earth Anishinaabe politician, author, and activist Winona LaDuke is one of the most recognizable tribal figures in modern America. Press Reports Of Animal Hoarding, Arnold Arluke, Randy Frost, Gail Steketee, Gary Patronek, Carter Luke, Edward Messner, Jane Nathanson, Michelle Papazian

Psychology: Faculty Publications

This article explores how the press reports nonhuman animal hoarding and hoarders. It discusses how 100 articles from 1995 to the present were content analyzed. Analysis revealed five emotional themes that include drama, revulsion, sympathy, indignation, and humor. While these themes draw readers' attention and make disparate facts behind cases understandable by packaging them in familiar formats, they also present an inconsistent picture of animal hoarding that can confuse readers about the nature and significance of this behavior as well as animal abuse, more generally.
