Adaptive Inference For Distinguishing Credible From Incredible Patterns In Nature, C. S. Holling, Craig R. Allen Jan 2002

Adaptive Inference For Distinguishing Credible From Incredible Patterns In Nature, C. S. Holling, Craig R. Allen

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Strong inference is a powerful and rapid tool that can be used to identify and explain patterns in molecular biology, cell biology, and physiology. It is effective where causes are single and separable and where discrimination between pairwise alternative hypotheses can be determined experimentally by a simple yes or no answer. But causes in ecological systems are multiple and overlapping and are not entirely separable. Frequently, competing hypotheses cannot be distinguished by a single unambiguous test, but only by a suite of tests of different kinds, that produce a body of evidence to support one line of argument and not …

Reanalysis Of Passive And Negative Prefixes In Seri, Stephen A. Marlett Jan 2002

Reanalysis Of Passive And Negative Prefixes In Seri, Stephen A. Marlett

Linguistic Discovery

Two productive Seri prefixes, negative and passive, are in a limited number of cases reanalyzed as part of the verb stem. This reanalysis has produced homophonous verb forms: one group is clearly analytical (affix + root) and one group is clearly synthetic. The evidence that reanalysis has taken place is presented. These new verb roots enter into new morphological constructions. And since the original analytical verb forms continue to exist, the result is the coexistence of homophonous and sometimes virtually synonymous words (such as the original transitive verb and a new causative verb that is based on a reanalyzed passive).

Summary Report On The Bird Friendly Building Program: Effect Of Light Reduction On Collision Of Migratory Birds., Lesley J. Evans Ogden Jan 2002

Summary Report On The Bird Friendly Building Program: Effect Of Light Reduction On Collision Of Migratory Birds., Lesley J. Evans Ogden

Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP)

Most migratory songbirds are nocturnal migrants, which makes them vulnerable to collision with lighted structures they encounter along their flight path during migration. The Fatal Light Awareness Program (FLAP) was formed by a group of concerned citizens to rescue and relocate disoriented birds trapped in the city centre, and to record the number and species of birds killed due to collision. Following the initiation of the Bird Friendly Building (BFB) Program by FLAP and World Wildlife Fund Canada in 1997, light emissions at 16 buildings in the downtown core of Toronto were also monitored during migration seasons. This report summarizes …

Sustaining Geographies Of Hope: Cultural Resources On Public Lands, Sandi Zellmer

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

This Article integrates constitutional principles, statutory requirements, and federal policy governing the use and preservation of cultural resources to sketch out a decision-making framework for public land managers. Specific examples of cases where American Indian interests have been pitted against competing demands at Devils Tower National Monument, the Indian Pass area of the California Desert, and the Medicine Wheel are examined to illustrate optimal solutionssolutions allowing the greatest possible accommodation of cultural, even spiritual, interests, while protecting the resources from degradation. The conflicts at these sites, and the opportunities presented by these conflicts, show that federal agencies can adopt reasonable …

Teaching Biology Using Agriculture As The Context: Perceptions Of High School Students, Mark Balschweid

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine how high school students perceived science and agriculture after completing a yearlong biology class that used animal agriculture as the context. This study utilized a case-study approach. The population for the study included all students who participated in a biology course utilizing animal agriculture as the context for teaching biology (N=531). More than 90% of the subjects reported they agreed or strongly agreed that participating in a biology class that used agriculture as the context helped them understand the relationship between science and agriculture. Over 85% of those responding agreed or strongly …
