Vocs, Pesticides, Nitrate, And Their Mixtures In Groundwater Used For Drinking Water In The United States, Paul Squillace, Jonathon Scott, Michael Moran, B. T. Nolan, Dana Kolpin

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Samples of untreated groundwater from 1255 domestic drinking-water wells and 242 public supply wells were analyzed as part of the National Water-Quality Assessment Program of the U.S. Geological Survey between 1992 and 1999. Wells were sampled to define the regional quality of the groundwater resource and, thus, were distributed geographically across large aquifers, primarily in rural areas. For each sample, as many as 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), 83 pesticides, and nitrate were analyzed. On the basis of previous studies, nitrate concentrations as nitrogen ≥3 mg/L were considered to have an anthropogenic origin. VOCs were detected more frequently (44%) than …

Pharmaceuticals, Hormones, And Other Organic Wastewater Contaminants In U.S. Streams, 1999-2000: A National Reconnaissance, Dana Kolpin, Edward Furlong, Michael Meyer, E. Michael Thurman, Steven Zaugg, Larry Barber, Herbert Buxton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

To provide the first nationwide reconnaissance of the occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in water resources, the U.S. Geological Survey used five newly developed analytical methods to measure concentrations of 95 OWCs in water samples from a network of 139 streams across 30 states during 1999 and 2000. The selection of sampling sites was biased toward streams susceptible to contamination (i.e. downstream of intense urbanization and livestock production). OWCs were prevalent during this study, being found in 80% of the streams sampled. The compounds detected represent a wide range of residential, industrial, and agricultural origins …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Research was conducted during 1996–2000 to develop baits for delivering an oral rabies vaccine to raccoons (Procyon lotor) and coyotes (Canis latrans). A bait was sought that: (1) was attractive to the target species, (2) could be distributed by aircraft, (3) was as effective (or more so) than the currently used fish meal polymer bait, and (4) could be produced in large numbers by automated procedures and could be purchased by user groups at substantially lower cost.

Ten field trials were conducted to document raccoons’ bait flavor preferences, evaluate a new vaccine sachet bait coated with …

The Brazilian Legal Tradition And Environmental Protection: Friend Or Foe, Janelle E. Kellman

UC Law SF International Law Review

Brazil is home to almost forty-two percent of the area known worldwide as the Amazon basin. Despite its tremendous beauty and ecological richness, the Amazon forest is being destroyed at an unprecedented rate. Legal historians and international scholars have argued that the controversy surrounding the Amazon has stemmed from conflicting economic uses of the forest. Economics, however, is only one piece of the puzzle that accounts for the massive destruction of the rainforest and its surrounding ecosystem. Brazil has a complex set of environmental regulations and statutes. This Article examines how Brazilian legal culture and society have made it virtually …

Phosphorus Risk Assessment Index Evaluation Using Runoff Measurements

Published by University of Nebraska – Lincoln’s Livestock Environmental Issues Committee. Manure and composted manure are valuable and renewable resources that can be effectively utilized for crop production and soil improvement. However, runoff from cropland areas receiving manure or compost may contribute to increased phosphorus (P) in streams and lakes. The main factors controlling P movement in surface runoff are transport (runoff and erosion) and source factors such as manure or fertilizer application method and rate, and soil P test level. Elevated soil P levels may result from application of manure at …

Assessing Odor Risk

Odors from animal production operations are a major concern in rural communities. Pressure from the public and the potential impact on the rural economy has caused strong emotional conflicts. Currently livestock producers and urban planning officials have few tools to objectively evaluate scientifically based setbacks between livestock operations and residential areas. Conversely, livestock producers have few tools available to them to demonstrate how odor control technologies can reduce the risk potential of odor incidents.

Recognizing this concern in Minnesota, the Minnesota Legislature provided funds to their University to develop a tool to help predict offsite odor movement …

The Economic Potential of Methane Recovery for Swine Operations: Projected Impacts of Various Public-Policy Scenarios

Economic analyses were performed on anaerobic digestion of manure from finishing operations. The main factors considered were herd size (1,000 head; 3,500 head; and 10,000 head) and method of financial support provided (cost-share program, no-interest loans, tax subsidies, and subsidized electrical sales).
Installation of a digester system is a significant investment that is currently very difficult to justify economically to Nebraska producers based upon consideration of readily quantifiable income and expenses, regardless of farm size. Swine finishing operations looking to invest in this technology would …

Wood Thrush Movements And Habitat Use: Effects Of Forest Management For Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers, Jason Lang, Larkin A. Powell, David Krementz, Michael J. Conroy

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We monitored adult and juvenile breeding-season movements and habitat use of radio-tagged Wood Thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina) at the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, central Georgia, USA. We investigated the effects that management for Red-cockaded Woodpeckers (Picoides borealis), thinning and burning >30 year old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) habitat, had on Wood Thrushes, a ground-foraging and midstory-nesting species. Adult Wood Thrush pairs regularly moved long distances between nesting attempts (range 1 to 17,388 m). The only experimental effect we found on adult movements was a decrease in weekly emigration rates (AP) from thinned and burned compartments …

Environmental Change In The Great Plains: An Isotopic Record From Fossil Horses, Benjamin H. Passey, Thure E. Cerling, Michael E. Perkins, Michael R. Voorhies, John M. Harris, Shane T. Tucker Jan 2002

Environmental Change In The Great Plains: An Isotopic Record From Fossil Horses, Benjamin H. Passey, Thure E. Cerling, Michael E. Perkins, Michael R. Voorhies, John M. Harris, Shane T. Tucker

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of fossil horse tooth enamel from Nebraska and Texas show evidence for late Neogene environmental changes in the Great Plains. The earliest unambiguous C4 dietary signal among Texas equids coincides with the age of the classic late Hemphillian–age Coffee Ranch fauna, which we suggest is ∼6.6 Ma based on volcanic ash correlations. C4 vegetation was present in the diets of a small fraction of late Hemphillian equids in Nebraska and was thereafter ordinary in the diets of both Nebraska and Texas equids. There is no unequivocal evidence for abundant C4 vegetation in …

G02-1444 Medical Sharps Disposal From Livestock Operations, Dicky D. Griffin, Marilyn Buhman Jan 2002

G02-1444 Medical Sharps Disposal From Livestock Operations, Dicky D. Griffin, Marilyn Buhman

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains how to properly dispose of medical sharps (hypodermic needles and scalpel blades) for livestock operations. Understanding this is critical for employee safety and environmental stewardship.

Disposing livestock medical sharps presents two concerns. The first is human safety. Handling livestock medical sharps presents a potential employee safety concern and as such is addressed within the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Second, the disposal of livestock medical sharps presents an environmental hazard and as such is addressed within the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

Ec02-173 Spotted And Diffuse Knapweed, Neil L. Heckman, Ryan M. Goss, Roch E. Gaussoin, Stevan Z. Knezevic, John L. Lindquist

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Spotted knapweed (Centaure amaculosa Lam. = C. biebersteinii DC.) and diffuse knapweed (C.diffusa Lam.) are two of Nebraska’s seven noxious weeds. They are also noxious in at least 17 other states. These are closely related species that are well adapted to a variety of habitats including open forests, rangelands and pastures, Conservation Reserve Program lands, roadsides, and ditch banks. Centaurea is a large genus of over 400 species, 32 of which are common weeds of the United States and several of which [e.g., yellowstar thistle, C. solstitalis L, and Russian knapweed, C. repens L. =Acroptilon repens (L.) …

Paylean® Improves Growth And Carcass Merit Of Pigs With 25% And 50% Nebraska Index Line Genes, Rodger K. Johnson, D. Petry, Phillip S. Miller, R. Fisher

Nebraska Swine Reports

The Nebraska Index Line excels in reproduction and is being used in industry breeding programs. However, because it has been selected only for litter size since 1981, growth and carcass merit of pure-line pigs are below industry standards. The objectives of this experiment were 1) to compare growth and carcass traits of Index cross pigs with either 50% or 25% Line I genes in a crossbreeding system typical of how the line is used in the industry and 2) to determine the effects of feeding 18 g PAYLEAN® per ton during the last 28 days of the feeding period on …

Sorting And Mixing Effects In A Wean-To-Finish Facility, Mike Brumm

Nebraska Swine Reports

An experiment was conducted to evaluate whether removing and mixing lightweight pigs in a wean-to-finish facility resulted in improved pig performance to slaughter compared to never removing pigs from a pen from weaning to slaughter. Two populations of pigs were compared. The removed and mixed population consisted of pens comprised of 1) 20 pigs per pen with the five lightest pigs removed three weeks after weaning and 2) 15 pigs per pen with the pen comprised of the five lightest pigs from three of the 20 pig pens. The unsorted population consisted of 15 pigs per pen from weaning to …

Effectiveness Of Pork Quality Assurance Training For Youth, Rosemarie Nold Jan 2002

Effectiveness Of Pork Quality Assurance Training For Youth, Rosemarie Nold

Nebraska Swine Reports

Over 3,500 youth in Nebraska were trained and certified in Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) in 1999. Quality assurance training had an impact on the youths’ opinions about quality assurance and consumers and on the youths’ knowledge of quality assurance practices. Emphasis on character development and decision-making skills translated into positive responses about the responsibilities of a livestock producer to animals and consumers. While most youth understood at least some of their responsibilities prior to completing the training, the quality assurance training served to reinforce the understanding of those youth and also to help all youth recognize the breadth of the …

Economic Analysis Of The Selection Response In The Ne Index Line, D. B. Petry, B. P. Mcallister, Rodger K. Johnson Jan 2002

Economic Analysis Of The Selection Response In The Ne Index Line, D. B. Petry, B. P. Mcallister, Rodger K. Johnson

Nebraska Swine Reports

The objective was to estimate economic effects of 19 generations of selection for increased litter size in the NE Index line. Using realized biological data, 1,250-sow enterprises based on Index line and Control line females were simulated. Each system was closed to introduction of females and included pureline females mated to produce replacement pureline and F1 gilts, and F1 females mated to terminal cross boars to produce market progeny. Costs of production and income statements were produced using the reproductive, growth and carcass data from the NE Index (I) and Control (C) lines reported in the two preceding …
