Data were obtained opportunistically from 28 adult (14M; 14 F) bullfrogs collected during April 2001 from Meadow Valley Wash located between the cities of Carp and Elgin, Lincoln County. Nevada, USA (37⁰17’N, 114⁰30'W). Although there are two summary reports that provide publication lists of bullfrog food/diet literature (Bury and Whelan I 984. Ecology and Management of the Bullfrog. USDI, FWS Resource Publ. 155. 23 pp.; Casper and Hendricks, in press. In M.J. Lannoo [ed.], Status and Conservation of U.S. Amphibians. Univ. California Press, Berkeley), there are, to our knowledge, no published bullfrog diets from this region.

Heart Rate And Energy Expenditure Of Incubating Wandering Albatrosses: Basal Levels, Natural Variation, And The Effects Of Human Disturbance, H Weimerskirch, Scott A. Shaffer, G Mabille, J Martin, O Boutard, J-L Rouanet
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
We studied the changes in heart rate (HR) associated with metabolic rate of incubating and resting adult wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans) on the Crozet Islands. Metabolic rates of resting albatrosses fitted with external HR recorders were measured in a metabolic chamber to calibrate the relationship between HR and oxygen consumption (V̇O2) (V̇O2=0.074×HR+0.019, r2=0.567, P<0.001, where V̇O2 is in ml kg–1 min–1 and HR is in beats min–1). Incubating albatrosses were then fitted with HR recorders to estimate energy expenditure of albatrosses within natural field conditions. We also examined the natural variation in HR and the effects of human disturbance on nesting birds by monitoring the changes in HR. Basal HR was positively related to the mass of the individual. The HR of incubating birds corresponded to a metabolic rate that was 1.5-fold (males) and 1.8-fold (females) lower than basal metabolic rate (BMR) measured in this and a previous study. The difference was probably attributable to birds being stressed while they were held in the metabolic chamber or wearing a mask. Thus, previous measurements of metabolic rate under basal conditions or for incubating wandering albatrosses are likely to be overestimates. Combining the relationship between HR and metabolic rate for both sexes, we estimate that wandering albatrosses expend 147 kJ kg–1 day–1 to incubate their eggs. In addition, the cost of incubation was assumed to vary because (i) HR was higher during the day than at night, and (ii) there was an effect of wind chill (<0°C) on basal HR. The presence of humans in the vicinity of the nest or after a band control was shown to increase HR for extended periods (2–3 h), suggesting that energy expenditure was increased as a result of the disturbance. Lastly, males and females reacted differently to handling in terms of HR response: males reacted more strongly than females before handling, whereas females took longer to recover after being handled.

A Comparison Of Perceived Stress Levels And Coping Styles Of Junior And Senior Students In Nursing And Social Work Programs, Robin L. Walton
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in the perceived stress levels and the coping styles of junior and senior students in nursing and social work programs. The study used a descriptive comparative approach and was non[1]experimental. Research questions were developed to guide this research. The population for this research included all junior and senior nursing and social work students preparing for or in clinical courses at a selected university. The sample consisted of 89 nursing students and 33 social work students. Data was obtained through self-reported survey procedures. The researcher visited appropriate classrooms …

Hope's Haven is a story about a young girl who is subjected to the challenges of homelessness when her mother loses her job. It is based on the true events of my own childhood. The curriculum included is geared toward 2nd grade. It is created to increase awareness of and tolerance for those in adverse conditions. The research paper documents the process by which I wrote the book as well as giving information about manuscript preparation and submission for publication. A mock-up ofthe book is included as an example of how the post-publication product might look. It is illustrated with …

Le Silence Du Bonheur And The House Of Forgiveness: Space And Silence In Flood, Aimee Berger
Robert Penn Warren Studies
Katrin Meise reformulates Wittgenstein's famous dictum-"What we cannot speak about, we must pass over in silence"-in a way that is particularly germane to a reading of Warren's novel Flood: ''What we pass over in silence, we must speak about." Warren establishes a complex aesthetic that incorporates silence into the circuit of discourse, forcing characters to confront the limitations of language, even as they realize the redemptive power of telling a "true" story.

Thinking Trees and Laughing Cats includes fifty-four stories intended to be used with puppets (even if the story is told by a narrator, the narrator should be a puppet). Each story is preceded by an indication of some key concepts found in it, and is followed by a short list of leading Ideas that correlate to the New Jersey state core curriculum standards for early childhood (ages three to four). Those standards are provided in an appendix to the book, which includes an additional category of standards developed at the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children for young …

The Effects Of Enclosure Type On Aggressive Behavior In Captive Chimpanzees, Erica Renee Findley
The Effects Of Enclosure Type On Aggressive Behavior In Captive Chimpanzees, Erica Renee Findley
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Male chimpanzees are known to be aggressively territorial in the wild. It is expected that the limited enclosures of captivity would make them even more aggressive. The Kansas City Zoo was chosen as an ideal venue to explore this assumption because it boasts the largest outdoor enclosure of its kind, and the apes alternate between this and much smaller indoor housing. Quantitative data on crowd size, time of day, temperature, and frequency/intensity/duration of aggressive behaviors were recorded for the alpha male in both enclosures during 300 hours of observation. These data were used to test the following hypotheses: as measured …

Diet and prey handling behavior were determined for Louisiana pine snakes (Pituophis ruthveni) and black pine snakes (P. melanoleucus lodingi). Louisiana pine snakes prey heavily on Baird's pocket gophers (Geomys breviceps), with which they are sympatric, and exhibit specialized behaviors that facilitate handling this prey species within the confines of burrow systems. Black pine snakes, which are not sympatric with pocket gophers, did not exhibit these specialized behaviors. For comparative purposes, prey handling of P. sayi sayi and Elaphe obsoleta lindheimeri was also examined.
