Impact Of Flower Harvesting On The Salt Marsh Plant Limonium Carolinianum, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Edward G. Reekie, Heather L. Hewlin, Philip D. Taylor, J. Sherman Boates Jan 2002

Impact Of Flower Harvesting On The Salt Marsh Plant Limonium Carolinianum, Jennifer L. Baltzer, Edward G. Reekie, Heather L. Hewlin, Philip D. Taylor, J. Sherman Boates

Biology Faculty Publications

Because of the potentially detrimental effects of seed production on adult survivorship and growth, moderate flower harvesting may have little negative impact on population growth of long-lived perennial plants such as Limonium carolinianum (Walter) Britton. We examined this by collecting data on survivorship, growth, and fecundity of an unharvested population over a period of 5 years and conducted a controlled experiment to examine the effect of harvesting on adult survivorship and growth over a 3-year period. Data were summarized in the form of a stage structured matrix population model with a stochastic element that incorporated year-to-year variation in transition probabilities. …

Physiological Responses To Acute Silver Exposure In The Freshwater Crayfish (Cambarus Diogenes Diogenes)—A Model Invertebrate?, Martin Grosell, Colin J. Brauner, Scott P. Kelly, James C. Mcgeer, Adalto Bianchini, Chris M. Wood Jan 2002

Physiological Responses To Acute Silver Exposure In The Freshwater Crayfish (Cambarus Diogenes Diogenes)—A Model Invertebrate?, Martin Grosell, Colin J. Brauner, Scott P. Kelly, James C. Mcgeer, Adalto Bianchini, Chris M. Wood

Biology Faculty Publications

Adult crayfish (Cambarus diogenes diogenes) exposed to 8.41 ± 0.17 μg silver/L (19.4% as Ag+) in moderately hard freshwater under flow-through conditions for 96 h exhibited ionoregulatory disturbance, elevated metabolic ammonia (Tamm) production and substantial silver accumulation in the gills, hemolymph, and hepatopancreas. The ionoregulatory disturbance included both a generally reduced unidirectional Na1 influx and an increased unidirectional Na+ efflux, leading to a substantial net loss of Na+ from the silver-exposed crayfish. The Na+ uptake in silver-exposed crayfish differed overall from controls, while the increased Na+ efflux recovered to control values 48 …

Big Media: Its Effect On The Marketplace Of Ideas And How To Slow The Urge To Merge, 20 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 247 (2002), Donald R. Simon

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

"The free flow of information is the life-blood of democracy." Americans are experiencing many media corporate mergers in recent years, and one is likely to ponder whether the idea of "marketplace of ideas" still holds true. In this article, the author discusses how economically driven censorship of journalism is blinding the public by market concentration and cross-ownership of media corporations. The fears of the Founding Fathers still lurk in the background as James Madison wrote: "a popular government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy, or perhaps both." …

Tax Fairness In Eleventh Century England, John Mcdonald Jan 2002

Tax Fairness In Eleventh Century England, John Mcdonald

Accounting Historians Journal

Alongside the Roman census from Augustus' time and the ecclesiastical surveys or polyptychs of the 8th and 9th century Carolingian kingdoms, the Domesday Survey of 1086 occupies a most significant place in accounting history. Domesday Book, the outcome of the Survey, lists the incomes, tax assessments, wealth and resources of most estates in England and was used as a working accounting document by the monarch and public officials to raise taxes, distribute resources and consolidate power. Although the Domesday document itself survives, many details of its construction and use have been lost in the mists of time. This paper describes …

Accounting And Redistribution: The Palace And Mortuary Cult In The Middle Kingdom, Ancient Egypt, Mahmoud Ezzamel Jan 2002

Accounting And Redistribution: The Palace And Mortuary Cult In The Middle Kingdom, Ancient Egypt, Mahmoud Ezzamel

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper examines detailed historical material drawn from primary sources to explore the role of accounting practices in the functioning of several key stages of the redistributive economy of the Middle Kingdom, ancient Egypt. First, the paper attends to the role of accounting in securing a regular flow of commodities to the state, in the form of taxation in kind. The historical material suggests clearly that accounting practices played a crucial role in levying and collecting precise tax liabilities, and in monitoring the storing of commodities in state granaries and storehouses. The second level of analysis is concerned with the …

Arbuscular Mycorrhizae Of Mojave Desert Plants, J. H. Titus, P. J. Titus, R. S. Nowak, S. D. Smith

Life Sciences Faculty Research

Roots of 15 Mojave Desert plant species were assessed for arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) colonization in spring and autumn 1999. Another 19 species were assessed in autumn only. Perennial species were AM colonized, whereas annual species contained very low levels of AM hyphae or were nonmycorrhizal. The nonnative tree Tamarix ramosissima was also nonmycorrhizal. Levels of hyphae changed over the season in 2 species, arbuscle levels increased in 1 species, and vesicles decreased in 7 species. Mycorrhizal inoculum potential (MIP) was assessed in the soils associated with spring-collected plants. All soils were found to contain MIP. MIP values were not correlated …

The History Of The Discovery And Initial Seed Dissemination Of Metasequoia Glyptostroboides, A "Living Fossil", Jinshuang Ma

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Ever since the "living fossil ", Metasequoia glyptostroboides, was discovered during the 1940s in China, accounts of its mysterious discovery and introduction throughout the world have been told many times in different languages. However, information has often departed considerably from the true story. This paper represents a synthesis of more than 1000 original letters, manuscripts and publications both in Chinese and other languages, and addresses two main questions about details of the story: (1) how was the living fossil really discovered , and (2) who introduced the seeds into the U.S.A. and the rest of the world? Several controversies surrounding …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

This manuscript extends our previously published work (based on data from one clinic) on the association between three drinking water-treatment modalities (boiling, filtering, and bottling) and diarrhoeal disease in HIV-positive persons by incorporating data from two additional clinics collected in the following year. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of drinking water patterns, medication usage, and episodes of diarrhoea among HIV-positive persons attending clinics associated with the San Francisco Community Consortium. We present combined results from our previously published work in one clinic (n = 226) with data from these two additional clinics (n = 458). In this combined analysis we …

Risk Factors In Hiv-Associated Diarrhoeal Disease: The Role Of Drinking Water, Medication And Immune Status, J. N. S. Eisenberg, T. J. Wade, S. Charles, M. Vu, A. Hubbard, C. C. Wright, Deborah A. Levy, P. Jensen, J. M. Colford Jan 2002

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

In a cross-sectional survey of 226 HIV-infected men, we examined the occurrence of diarrhoea and its relationship to drinking water consumption patterns, risk behaviours, immune status and medication use. Diarrhoea was reported by 47% of the respondents. Neither drinking boiled nor filtered water was significantly associated with diarrhoea (OR = 0.5 [0.2, 1.6], 1.2 [0.6, 2.5] respectively), whereas those that drank bottled water were at risk for diarrhoea (OR = 3.0 [1.1, 7.8]). Overall, 47% always or often used at least one water treatment. Of the 37% who were very concerned about drinking water, 62% had diarrhoea, 70% always or …

Using Cowpea To Manage Soil Phosphorus Accumulation From Poultry Litter Applications In A Cool-Season Vegetable Rotation, Clydette M. Alsup-Egbers, B A. Kahn

College of Agriculture

Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] cover crops were grown in a rotation with broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck.), spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.), and turnip greens [Brassica rapa L. var. (DC.) Metzg. utilis] to evaluate the legume's ability to remove excess P from soils when poultry litter was used as a fertilizer. Fertilizer treatments were: 1) litter to meet each crop's recommended preplant N requirements (1×); 2) litter at twice the recommended rate (2×); and 3) urea at the 1× rate as the control. Following the vegetable crops, cowpeas were planted on half of each replication, while the other …
