The Dharma Blues, Robert Castle Apr 2002

The Dharma Blues, Robert Castle

Journal of Religion & Film

So much attention was given to the ratings controversy for Stanley Kubrick's film, Eyes Wide Shut, that a problem with the film for members of the Hindu faith was almost entirely ignored. So worried were people about the images of the infamous orgy scene at the Long Island Mansion, that they failed to notice that the music composed for that scene generated its own protest - enough protest to cause the film to be altered for its releases outside of the United States and for both video and DVD sales. The Hindu protest, however, might have positive, if unexpected, …

Rosetta Stone: A Consideration Of The Dardenne Brothers' Rosetta, Bert Cardullo Apr 2002

Rosetta Stone: A Consideration Of The Dardenne Brothers' Rosetta, Bert Cardullo

Journal of Religion & Film

The Dardenne brothers' Rosetta has Christian overtones despite its unrelieved bleakness of tone. In fact, the titular heroine, a teenaged Belgian girl living in dire, subproletarian poverty, has much in common with Robert Bresson's protagonists Mouchette and Balthasar. Both Mouchette (1966) and Au hasard Balthasar (1966) are linked with Rosetta in their examination of the casual, gratuitous inhumanity to which the meek of this earth are subjected, and both films partake of a religious tradition, or spiritual style, dominated by French Catholics like Bresson, Cavalier, Pialat, and Doillon. Those who have argued that the Dardennes' film is merely a documentary-like …

“Certain Fundamental Truths”: A Dialectic On Negative And Positive Liberty In Hate-Speech Cases, W. Bradley Wendel

Law and Contemporary Problems

Matthew Hale is a white supremacist who likes to attract media attention. He set himself up as the leader of a racist "church" called the World Church of the Creator and immediately went about attempting to put an articulate, polite face on the organization. Hale's application to become a licensed attorney in Illinois, his subsequent denial and the litigation that followed are discussed.

Defining And Achieving Decisive Victory, Colin S. Gray Dr. Apr 2002

Defining And Achieving Decisive Victory, Colin S. Gray Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The author explores the concept of victory in the war in terrorism, but he does so by placing it within the larger currents of change that are sweeping the global security environment. He contends that the time-tested idea of decisive victory is still an important one, but must be designed very carefully in this dangerous new world. To do so correctly can provide the foundation for an effective strategy. To fail to do so could be the first step toward strategic defeat.

Stable Replication Of Papillomavirus Genomes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Peter C. Angeletti, Kitai Kim, Fiona J. Fernandes, Paul F. Lambert Apr 2002

Stable Replication Of Papillomavirus Genomes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Peter C. Angeletti, Kitai Kim, Fiona J. Fernandes, Paul F. Lambert

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Papillomaviruses normally replicate in stratified squamous epithelial tissues of their mammalian hosts, in which the viral genome is found as a nuclear plasmid. Two viral proteins, E1, a helicase, and E2, a transcriptional activator and plasmid maintenance factor, are known to contribute to the episomal replication of the viral genome. Recently, our laboratory discovered that papillomaviruses can also replicate in an E1-independent manner in mammalian cells (K. Kim and P. F. Lambert, Virology, in press; K. Kim and P. F. Lambert, submitted for publication). In this study, we describe experiments investigating the capacity of the human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV16) …

Optimization Strategies For Captive Breeding, Brigitte Tenhumberg Apr 2002

Optimization Strategies For Captive Breeding, Brigitte Tenhumberg

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

There are many uncertainties that must be evaluated when captive breeding is considered. We have begun examining methods for supporting captive breeding decision-making by combining stochastic models with optimization methods. Captive breeding decisions should be state dependent- i.e., the best decision when there are 20 animals left might be different from one when there are 100 animals left. The method we use to search for state dependent decision that minimize the risk of extinction for a species is called Stochastic Dynamic Programming. We construct stochastic dynamic programming to identify the optimal size of translocations between captivity and the wild. For …

History Of Diabetes Mellitus, Awad M. Ahmed Apr 2002

History Of Diabetes Mellitus, Awad M. Ahmed

Saudi Medical Journal

Clinical features similar to diabetes mellitus were described 3000 years ago by the ancient Egyptians. The term "diabetes" was first coined by Araetus of Cappodocia (81-133AD). Later, the word mellitus (honey sweet) was added by Thomas Willis (Britain) in 1675 after rediscovering the sweetness of urine and blood of patients (first noticed by the ancient Indians). It was only in 1776 that Dobson (Britain) firstly confirmed the presence of excess sugar in urine and blood as a cause of their sweetness. In modern time, the history of diabetes coincided with the emergence of experimental medicine. An important milestone in the …

Clinicopathological Aspects Of Chediak-Higashi Syndrome In The Accelerated Phase, Durjoy K. Shome, Hussain Al-Mukharraq, Najat Mahdi, Ghada Ameen, Eman Farid

Saudi Medical Journal

This report describes clinical and laboratory features of a case of Chediak-Higashi syndrome that presented in the accelerated phase of the disorder. This female infant presented with a fever, marked neutropenia, large cytoplasmic granules in leukocytes and a constellation of features that suggested a virus-associated hemophagocytic syndrome. The clinical course was marked by limited response to the therapeutic agents that included ascorbate, cytotoxic agents and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

Sequences of ITS-1 and ITS-2 rDNA for adult males of Spiculopteragia asymmetrica,/i> and Spiculopteragia quadrispiculata in red deer (Cervus elaphus) were determined. They were found to be identical, suggesting that S. asymmetrica and S. quadrispiculata represent a single species and do not refute the concept of dimorphic species in the Spiculopteragia.

The Role Of Glutathione In The Defense Pathway Response Of Arabidopsis Thaliana To The Pathogen Pseudomonas Syringae Pathovar Tomato Dc3000 Avrb, Allison Patrice Mckenna Apr 2002

The Role Of Glutathione In The Defense Pathway Response Of Arabidopsis Thaliana To The Pathogen Pseudomonas Syringae Pathovar Tomato Dc3000 Avrb, Allison Patrice Mckenna

Masters Theses

Inoculation of Arabidopsis thaliana with Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 AvrB (Pst) results in a series of biochemical changes, including an oxidative burst, accumulation of salicylic acid, (de)phosphorylation of proteins, localization of transcription factors to the nucleus and ultimately expression of pathogenesis-related genes. The redox status within plant cells, which is maintained by a cycle of antioxidants that are largely dependent on the reduced form of glutathione (GSH), because of its ability to donate electrons that are necessary to quench reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study focuses on the role of glutathione in the early defense responses of Arabidopsis to …

The Motivational Effects Of 3, 4-Methylendioxymethamphetamine On Responding Maintained By A Progressive-Ratio Schedule Of Water Delivery, Sean P. Laraway Apr 2002

The Motivational Effects Of 3, 4-Methylendioxymethamphetamine On Responding Maintained By A Progressive-Ratio Schedule Of Water Delivery, Sean P. Laraway

Masters Theses

Relative to their reinforcing and discriminative functions, the establishing operation (EO) function of drugs has received little attention from behavioral pharmacologists. This study investigated in rats the EO function of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA, Ecstasy) using a progressive-ratio (PR) 2 schedule of water delivery. Relative to vehicle control levels, Lower doses (1.0 and 1.8 mg/kp ip) had no effects, whereas the higher doses (3.2, 5.6 mg/kg ip) significantly decreased breaking points. In contrast to previous research, this study found no evidence that MDMA functioned as an EO for water. These results, along with findings from other studies using PR schedules, emphasize the …

Roots And Shoots Of The H. Dan Heyn Vision: Indigenous Planting Design, 1950-1980, Elizabeth A. Heiny-Cogswell Apr 2002

Roots And Shoots Of The H. Dan Heyn Vision: Indigenous Planting Design, 1950-1980, Elizabeth A. Heiny-Cogswell

Masters Theses

Indigenous planting design, the practice of incorporating regional native plant species into new landscape projects, is little studied. This trend is counter to the more known and accepted American practice of using exotic ornamental plant species. This thesis studies the work and context of one Texas landscape architect, H. Dan Heyn. Beginning in the 1950's and continuing through the 1980's, Heyn became committed to, and specialized in, the use of indigenous plants in his landscape architectural design practice.

This investigation shows the beginning and importance in Texas of the idea to use indigenous plants, the tremendous task involved to study …

Of Pigeonholes And Principles: A Reconsideration Of Discrimination Law, Denise G. Reaume Apr 2002

Of Pigeonholes And Principles: A Reconsideration Of Discrimination Law, Denise G. Reaume

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The common law has never developed a cause of action for discrimination. Instead, the legislatures have stepped in. This article explores not whether there should be a cause of action for discrimination at common law, but whether our thinking about discrimination from a legal point of view would benefit from drawing upon common law methodology. We can contrast two methodologies for the design and development over time of legal norms: the top-down model of the comprehensive code designed to bring to life a grand theory about the norms regulating human interaction, and the bottom-up model of case-by-case analysis aiming toward …

The Challenges Associated With Change In 4-H/Youth Development, Renee K. Mckee, B Allen Talbert, Susan J. Barkman Apr 2002

The Challenges Associated With Change In 4-H/Youth Development, Renee K. Mckee, B Allen Talbert, Susan J. Barkman

Journal of Extension

This article discusses a study documenting the beliefs about proactive change among volunteers and Extension staff who develop policy for local Indiana 4-H Programs. Data analysis indicated that volunteers believe in the core values of the 4-H Program; recommend that the 4-H Program should reach more and different youth; and believe that the program's rural image inhibits progress in these areas. Staff interactions with volunteers, lack of parental involvement, policy-making group organization and structure, and youth representation were cited as barriers to a more open, inclusive organization. The article makes recommendations based on the study's findings and suggests topics for …

Agriculture And The Environment: Three Myths, Three Themes, Three Directions, J.B. Ruhl Apr 2002

Agriculture And The Environment: Three Myths, Three Themes, Three Directions, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

Three very powerful and widely disseminated myths, what I call the Three Myths, have obscured the reality that agriculture is a leading source of environmental harm in our nation. Until we can divorce the dialogue on agri-environmental policy from these myths, the discussion of goals and policy instruments will remain mired.

The Object Of Ornament: European Design, 1480-1800, Judith A. Singsen

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 18, Spring 2002. This exhibition arose from a collaboration between participants in a Brown University art-history seminar of Fall 2001 and curators from three departments at The RISD Museum: Costume and Textiles; Decorative Arts; and Prints, Drawings, and Photographs. Studying each department's resources in the area of European ornament, the group examined how the work of artisans in materials such as wood, metal, fiber, and ceramics responded to and participated in the inventions of designers who drew patterns for prints. In the exhibition, related ornamented objects are clustered according to the themes of entertaining, study, dress, and …

Taking Behavioralism Too Seriously? The Unwarranted Pessimism Of The New Behavioral Analysis Of Law, Gregory Mitchell Apr 2002

Taking Behavioralism Too Seriously? The Unwarranted Pessimism Of The New Behavioral Analysis Of Law, Gregory Mitchell

William & Mary Law Review

Legal scholars increasingly rely on a behavioral analysis of judgment and decision making to explain legal phenomena and argue for legal reforms. The. main argument of this new behavioral analysis of the law is twofold: (1)All human cognition is beset by systematic flaws in the way that judgments and decisions are made, and theseflaws lead to predictable irrational behaviors and (2) these widespread and systematic nonrational tendencies bring into serious question the assumption of procedural rationality underlying much legal doctrine. This Article examines the psychological research relied on by legal behavioralistst o form this argumenta nd demonstratest hat this research …
