Don’T Lose Scarce & Expensive Hay Through Storage Or Feeding, Bob Durland, Steve Pohl Apr 2002

Don’T Lose Scarce & Expensive Hay Through Storage Or Feeding, Bob Durland, Steve Pohl

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Does it make sense to invest the time, labor and equipment in harvesting hay and then lose 30% of it during storage? With a 1l50 # round bale, worth $65/ton, this would amount to a loss of 345 # of hay, valued at $11.21, per bale. A producer who feeds his own hay is not only out the value of the damaged hay, but may have to purchase additional feed to replace that lost, doubling his expense.

Homeowner's Responsibilities For Using On-Site Sewage Treatment Systems, Russ Derickson Apr 2002

Homeowner's Responsibilities For Using On-Site Sewage Treatment Systems, Russ Derickson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Do not generate more wastewater than the average daily flow (gallons per day) for which the on-site system was designed. Install a water meter to measure the volume of water being used by the household (or other facility) to determine the flow released into the on-site treatment system. If the system has a pump/lift station delivering septic tank effluent to the soil treatment unit, install an electrical event counter on each lift station. Install a water meter to measure water usage. The event counter will tally the number of pump operation cycles, which, if multiplied by the gallons pumped per …

Drinking Water Standards- Health Advisories Levels, Russ Derickson Apr 2002

Drinking Water Standards- Health Advisories Levels, Russ Derickson

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Testing water is the first step in tackling domestic water quality problems. Water test reports will confirm your suspicion of quality problems. With results in hand you can determine the extent of the problem and the best alternative to solve it. A water test gives a quantifiable level of a contaminant at the time the sample was taken. These values usually are reported in mg/L (milligrams per liter).

Computer Games And The Military: Two Views, J.C. Herz, Michael R. Macedonia Apr 2002

Computer Games And The Military: Two Views, J.C. Herz, Michael R. Macedonia

Defense Horizons

Simulations are a critical aspect of U.S. military training. Commercial computer games are a growing part of our entertainment industry. The two fields have much in common, and the military can learn from the successful experience of the commercial sector. J.C. Herz provides an industry look at gaming technology and culture and suggests ways in which commercial experience can be applied to the military. Michael Macedonia responds to Herz’s analysis and provides a military gamer’s perspective on computer games and the military.

Despite their common antecedents, the commercial gaming and defense simulation industries have developed differently since the 1970s. Once …

Knowledge-Economy Ilites, The International Law Of Intellectual Property And Trade, And Economic Development, Michael P. Ryan Apr 2002

Knowledge-Economy Ilites, The International Law Of Intellectual Property And Trade, And Economic Development, Michael P. Ryan

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article challenges the simplistic view of the TRIPS Agreement as a tool solely for corporate power, emphasizing instead the agency and strategic choices of developing countries in shaping intellectual property (IP) policies to their economic benefit. It highlights the complexity of IP laws, including trademarks, patents, and copyrights, and their varying acceptance and impact in developing nations. The analysis underscores the importance of understanding sector-specific dynamics and the role of international organizations in promoting IP standards, ultimately advocating for a nuanced approach to IP policies that align with local development goals and global economic integration.

Use "The Filter You Were Born With": The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Internet Filtering For The Adult Patrons Of Public Libraries, Richard J. Peltz Apr 2002

Use "The Filter You Were Born With": The Unconstitutionality Of Mandatory Internet Filtering For The Adult Patrons Of Public Libraries, Richard J. Peltz

Washington Law Review

The only federal court (at the time of this writing) to consider the question ruled unconstitutional the mandatory filtering of Internet access for the adult patrons of public libraries. That 1998 decision helped the American Library Association and other free speech advocates fend off mandatory filtering for two years at the state and federal level, against the vigorous efforts of filtering proponents. Then, in 2000, the U.S. Congress conditioned federal funding of libraries on filter use, forcing the question into the courts as the latest colossal struggle over Internet regulation. This Article contends that the federal court in 1998 was …

Chemical, Isotopic, And Hydrogeologic Investigations Of An Agriculturally Impacted Area, Nottawa Creek Watershed, Calhoun County, Michigan, Gerald A. Unterreiner Apr 2002

Chemical, Isotopic, And Hydrogeologic Investigations Of An Agriculturally Impacted Area, Nottawa Creek Watershed, Calhoun County, Michigan, Gerald A. Unterreiner

Dissertations

A 4 km2 agricultural area within the somewhat poorly drained Nottawa Creek Watershed, south central Michigan, was investigated to help understand transport and transformation processes of nutrients and herbicides to surface water. Geology o f the study area is comprised of a thin glacial drift cover overlying shale bedrock. A one layer, two-dimensional numerical triangular finite element groundwater flow model was developed to evaluate regional groundwater flow. Selected horizontal hydraulic conductivities ranged from 3 x 10‘3 m/day to 107 m/day. Field-scale infiltration modeling with the computer program GLEAMS, substantiated with water level measurements, suggest significant recharge events occur during summer, …

Reconceptualizing Professional Responsibility: Incorporating Equality, Rosemary Cairns Way Apr 2002

Reconceptualizing Professional Responsibility: Incorporating Equality, Rosemary Cairns Way

Dalhousie Law Journal

Are legal professionals concerned with "doing good" or just with "doing well" financially? In an age of increasing and intensifying public scrutiny there is a need to examine and challenge the legal profession's conception of professional responsibility, and how it translates into practice. This paper expresses the concern that the profession has moved too far in the direction of a "billable hours" culture, a culture that is falling short of the legal profession's obligation as a self-regulated entity to consider and acknowledge the public interest at all points. The author calls for a broader conception of professionalism, one that encompasses …

On Jean Baudrillard's Impossible Exchange, Liam Mcnamara Apr 2002

On Jean Baudrillard's Impossible Exchange, Liam Mcnamara

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In many ways, Jean Baudrillard has never really attracted the critical attention that he deserves; his early brilliant books, such as For a Critique of the Political Economy of the Sign (1981) and The Mirror of Production (1975) remain resolutely out of print, perhaps because they do not accord with his recent high profile in the media. The hermetic obscurantism of these older texts repels a more casual reader, steeped as they are in poststructuralist theory and remote Marxist anthropology. They are also more rigorously scholarly than books such as Impossible Exchange, and therefore a less pleasurable …
