Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

A pilot project, conducted in a prekindergarten classroom, set out to evaluate the effectiveness of sending literacy bookbags home. The classroom teacher provided children with a variety of literacy bookbags to be taken home on a weekly basis. These bookbags contained books, journals, and writing tools along with activities for family/child interactions. Children shared their home experiences with classmates when they return to school. Parents were surveyed to determine their opinions regarding the project.

Influence Of Seismic Surveys On Western Gray Whales Off Sakhalin Island, Russia In 2001, David W. Weller, Yulia V. Ivashchenko, Grigory A. Tsidulko, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Apr 2002

Influence Of Seismic Surveys On Western Gray Whales Off Sakhalin Island, Russia In 2001, David W. Weller, Yulia V. Ivashchenko, Grigory A. Tsidulko, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Western gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) aggregate off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia during summer-autumn to feed on benthic and near-benthic prey. During summer 2001, 3D seismic surveys were conducted during a six-week period in known gray whale foraging areas off Sakhalin Island. To test the hypothesis that the distribution of gray whales on the feeding ground would shift away from nearby seismic surveying, we examined the number of whales and number of pods (dependent variables) sighted during systematic scans in relation to three independent variables (i.e. preseismic, seismic, post-seismic). Results showed the main effect of condition …

American Brands In Developing Countries, Y L R Moorthi, Kevin Lane Keller

Working Papers

American brands Coke, McDonald's, Levi's and Kellogg's are known all over the world. They command high mind and market shares in the US and Europe and are leaders in their categories. They can therefore be called "High Power Brands" (HPBs). However, their performance in the developing countries has not been as impressive as expected. This paper investigates the reasons for their subdued performance and recommends an action plan. At the root of the indifferent performance of HPBs lies inadequate grasp of the realities in emerging markets. This leads to two fundamental limitations that the HPBs suffer from namely, value dysfimctionality …

Greening Indian Businesses For The World Market, Aparna Sawhney Apr 2002

Greening Indian Businesses For The World Market, Aparna Sawhney

Working Papers

There has been a steady increase in environmental notifications under the provisions in the WTO Agreements as indicated by the recent WTO environmental database. This trend threatens to reduce market access and competitiveness of traditional exports from developing countries like India. The Indian businesses need to aggressively address the green challenge in the world market, and credibly signal the eco-sensitivity oftlmr products in the market by increasing environmental certification. Other developing countries like China have been quick with proactive strategies on environmental certification to tap global opportunities in the sectors like organic food/beverage and eco-textiles. The rates of growth in …

Government - Ngo Partnerships: An Idea Whose Time Has Come?, Sarath Chandra Davala, Gita Sen

Working Papers

The last three decades have witnessed an increasing volume of activity, number of organisations, and turnover of funds in development actions undertaken outside the traditional purview of governments. In this paper we are interested in these new kinds of development action from a particular angle. Our work may be seen as part of a "second generation" of analysis that examines how different development actors - NGOs, grassroots organisations (GROs), the government - work together. It is motivated by a recognition that scaling-up and sustainability of services on the one side, and the strengthening of democratic processes and deepening of democratic …

Branding Principles - Application To Business-To-Business Branding, Y L R Moorthi Apr 2002

Branding Principles - Application To Business-To-Business Branding, Y L R Moorthi

Working Papers

This essay consists of a review of three books on Brand Management. The books are reviewed with the purpose of arriving at an approach for b2b branding. The three authors Travis, Davis and Aaker show different approaches to branding. Travis is anecdotal, Aaker is conceptual and Davis adopts a mixture of the two approaches. Consequently, Travis targets the practitioner, Aaker targets the academic and Davis targets both. The three authors give useful principles for branding in general. But none of them directly addresses the issue of b2b branding. This paper provides an approach to b2b branding integrating Aaker5 s brand …

Singular And Plural Address In The Scriptures, James R. Rasband Apr 2002

Singular And Plural Address In The Scriptures, James R. Rasband

BYU Studies

Steeped in post-Enlightenment philosophy with its primary focus on the individual, modern readers may unwittingly assume that the Lord likewise is focused solely on individuals when he promises blessings or assigns responsibilities. Although the scriptures contain many instances where the Lord speaks to individuals separately, he also speaks to the Church or his people collectively. It is not always easy to distinguish between these two modes of address, especially because the English pronoun you can be either singular or plural. However, awareness of this linguistic issue can improve our reading of the scriptures, at times revising our understanding substantially.

Fisheries Management Report No. 6 - Proceedings Of Marron Farming Open Day 2002, Greg B. Maguire

Fisheries Published Reports

The marron industry is of considerable importance to the Department of Fisheries, being one of the older aquaculture industries in Western Australia, and one that accounts for around half the aquaculture licence holders in the State. While it has not grown as quickly as many hoped in the past, in 2000/01, some 52.2 tonnes of marron were produced, worth $1.18 million at the farm gate.

It is regionally significant, particularly in the south-west, and depending on appropriate site selection, has considerable potential in other areas. Farms are distributed from near Geraldton to around Bremer Bay, with additional interest around Esperance. …

Fisheries Research Report No. 139 - A 12-Month Survey Of Recreational Fishing In The Gascoyne Bioregion Of Western Australia During 1998-99, Neil R. Sumner, P C. Williamson, B E. Malseed

Fisheries Research Reports

A 12-month creel survey of recreational boat-based and shore-based fishing in the Gascoyne bioregion of Western Australia was conducted between April 1998 and March 1999. During the survey 1,738 boat crews were interviewed at public boat ramps when they returned from their fishing trip. During patrols conducted along the coastline 695 groups of boat-based fishers and 1,060 groups of shore-based fishers were interviewed at fishing locations and camp sites.

The total annual recreational fishing effort for the Gascoyne bioregion was 243,000 fisher days (95%CI: 222,000 – 264,000). This comprised 113,000 fisher days by boats launched from public ramps, 53,000 fisher …
