Comparison Of Buffered Grazing Systems For Beef Cattle, Charles R. Wolfe Iii May 2002

Comparison Of Buffered Grazing Systems For Beef Cattle, Charles R. Wolfe Iii

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

To evaluate the productivity of a rotational versus continuous grazing system for beef production within a buffer grazing system, thirty crossbred beef cows and their calves were randomly assigned to one of two grazing systems replicated twice over three years of the experiment. Each replication of the rotational system was stocked with 8 cow/calf pairs while the continuous system was stocked with 7 cow/calf pairs. The grazing season was divided into 3 periods to aid in analysis. Period 1 was further divided into grazing cycles consisting of 4 weeks each. Pasture growth during cycle I was found to be higher …

Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi May 2002

Modulation Of Thiols And Pulmonary Immune Responses Due To Diesel Exhaust Particle (Dep) Exposure, Nabil Hussain Al-Humadi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Environmental exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEP) has been of concern because of its potential contribution to the increased prevalence of acute and chronic airway diseases. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of thiol changes (due to DEP exposure) in immune responses. Rats were exposed to OVA, DEP, or both by intratracheal instillation (IT) and/or inhalation. IT-DEP exposure significantly increased the inflammatory parameters and thiol levels in both Sprague-Dawley and Brown Norway rats. Exposure to DEP and/or OVA resulted in significant increases in neutrophils, LDH, total protein, and albumin content in lavage fluid. Alveolar macrophage (AM) …

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen May 2002

Shifting Goals And Mounting Challenges For Statistical Methodology, Pranab K. Sen

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Modern interdisciplinary research in statistical science encompasses a wide field: agriculture, biology, biomedical sciences along with bioinformatics, clinical sciences, education, environmental and public health disciplines, genomic science, industry, molecular genetics, socio-behavior, socio-economics, toxicology, and a variety of other disciplines. Statistical science has historically had mathematical perspectives dominating theoretical and methodological developments. Yet, the advent of modern information technology has opened the doors for highly computation intensive statistical tools (i.e., software), wherein mathematical aspects are often de-emphasized. Knowledge discovery and data mining (KDDM) is now becoming a dominating force, with bioinformatics as a notable example. In view of this apparent discordance …

The Influence Of Predator Exclosures And Livestock Grazing On Duck Production At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah, Benjamin C. West May 2002

The Influence Of Predator Exclosures And Livestock Grazing On Duck Production At Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah, Benjamin C. West

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Nest predation is a major factor impacting duck production and recruitment on breeding areas in North America. I surveyed waterfowl managers employed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. state wildlife agencies to determine their beliefs about nest predation and its management. Over 64% of respondents believed that rates of nest success on their management units averaged < 30% between 1996-2000. Managers believed habitat management and direct predator control were the most effective techniques to reduce nest predation. The construction of predator ex closures around nesting habitat also has been recommended to reduce nest predation. Between 1999-200 I, I evaluated the effectiveness of 4 predator ex closures to enhance duck nest success at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, Utah. During this period, rates of nest success in the exclosures were slightly higher than that within control plots, but still < 15%. Although published guidelines commonly recommend predator fences < 117 cm in height, I observed red foxes jump the 11 4-cm-high fences. Additional research is needed to identify effective predator fence designs.

Wildlife managers have argued that periodic disturbance of vegetation should be a component of management on waterfowl breeding areas. Although many techniques are available to manipulate vegetation, grazing by domestic livestock has been controversial. Some researchers have reported that livestock grazing …

Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts May 2002

Effects Of Myxobolus Cerebralis On The Population Dynamics Of Kokanee In Porcupine Reservoir, Utah, Arthur E. Butts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study tracked the chronology and severity of Myxobolus cerebralis infection and related it to survival of age-0 kokanee to determine whether M. cerebralis represented a significant agent of morality in the population. Environmental conditions and losses to predation were identified and linked to age-0 kokanee survival to identify other sources of mortality in the population. We attempted to track survival of age-0 kokanee from the outmigration into the reservoir until the end of the first growing season in September of each year. The number of age-0 kokanee that entered the reservoir was calculated by obtaining estimates of total egg …

The Ecology Of Lianas And Their Role In Forests, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Frans Bongers May 2002

The Ecology Of Lianas And Their Role In Forests, Stefan A. Schnitzer, Frans Bongers

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Recent studies have demonstrated the increasingly important role of lianas (woody vines) in forest regeneration, species diversity and ecosystem-level processes, particularly in the tropics. Mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of liana species diversity could yield new insights into the maintenance of overall species diversity. Lianas contribute to forest regeneration and competition, not only by competing directly with trees, but also by differentially affecting tree species and thus changing how trees compete among themselves. In addition, they contribute considerably to ecosystem-level processes, such as whole-forest transpiration and carbon sequestration. As the rate of tropical forest disturbance increases, they are likely to …

Effect Of Gestation Gain On Lactation Performance And Return To Estrus Of First Parity Sows, G.W. Libal, D.N. Peters May 2002

Effect Of Gestation Gain On Lactation Performance And Return To Estrus Of First Parity Sows, G.W. Libal, D.N. Peters

South Dakota Swine Research Report, 2001

One of the most costly problems in the swine industry is the high turnover rate of sows in the herd. Failure to consume adequate feed and excess weight loss during lactation has been associated with subsequent reproduction problems. Research has proven that high gestation feeding levels and excessive gestation gain results in low lactation feed intake and excessive sow weight loss during lactation. Sows completing their first parity and sows from extremely productive lines have been identified as those most likely to be lost from the operation because of failure to conceive after weaning. Recommended gestation feeding levels often result …

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone May 2002

Longitudinal Analysis Of Behavior Patterns In A Captive Chimpanzee Population, Amy Augusta Tirone

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Data collected over an 11 year period were analyzed for behavioral constancy, reaction to environmental change, and the differential influence of environment and genetics in a group of captive chimpanzees using the framework of the Five Factor Model of Personality. Results suggested environment was a more influential factor in behavioral production, although expected reactions of specific individuals were not evidenced. Improvements upon this research include use of a more chimpanzee-specific personality model and more detailed data collection to support more precise conclusions regarding behavioral etiology.

Statistics And Sufficiency: Toward An Intellectual History Of Russia's Rural Crisis, David W. Darrow May 2002

Statistics And Sufficiency: Toward An Intellectual History Of Russia's Rural Crisis, David W. Darrow

History Faculty Publications

The article examines the impact of the ‘rise of statistical thinking’ and statistical measurement on elite perceptions of the condition of the Russian Empire's post-emancipation peasant economy. Using archival and published sources, it argues that the increased use of statistical measurement did much to concretize in numerical (‘objective’) terms the idea of rural crisis. In particular, the combination of traditional paternalistic concerns about the sufficiency of peasant resources and the use of cadastre measurement yielded an image of the peasant household economy in which the value (the income-producing capabilities) of post-emancipation peasant allotments nearly always fell short of subsistence requirements …

Function And Size Optimization In Mucuna Urens Vexillum, May 2002, Mark Macedo May 2002

Function And Size Optimization In Mucuna Urens Vexillum, May 2002, Mark Macedo

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study examines the role of the vexillum as an aural nectar guide in the species Mucuna urens. Field manipulations show that the vexillum of M. urens enhances visitation and pollen removal (X2 = 52.8, p<.001). Subsequent observational studies conducted on bat visited hummingbird feeders support this finding as well (X2 = 10.67, p< .005). Data also show an increase in vexillum size correlated with number of bats visits (X2 = 32.06, p < .001). Two explanations are offered for why M. urens and other bat pollinated flowers in the genus have not developed as large a vexillum as possible. Investment return optimization is one possible explanation. Niche partitioning of potential pollinators is another.

The Implementation Of A Disciple-Making Process In The Local Church, Eldon Babcock May 2002

The Implementation Of A Disciple-Making Process In The Local Church, Eldon Babcock

Doctor of Ministry

The project for this dissertation is to look at a disciple-making process for the local church and how to implement this process with a suggested curriculum. In order to accomplish this project I will visit five churches with the purpose of viewing the successes and failures of the disciple-making process that they may or may not have. In the first section of my dissertation I give an introduction covering why I believe the churches need a philosophy of discipleship and in later chapters address the need for one-on-one ministry that reproduces disciples for Christ. I will give definitions for Life …

Large Fries, Two Apples Pies: Rotational Leadership - An Ethnographic Investigation Into The Assimilation Of Corporate Values, A. Damos Solaru

Student Scholarship

The Problem: State and Federal welfare reform programs have had the effect of increasing the size of the work force by reducing the availability of benefits available to the long-term unemployed. Coming at a time when unemployment fell to record low levels, all new entrants to the work force were greeted with a large array of opportunities. For the previously unemployed welfare recipient, the experience of moving into the work force has not been easy. Unlike better-educated new entrants into the work force, former welfare recipients have lived in a society essentially outside of the mainstream. By developing outside of …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Non-heart-beating donor (NHBD) livers represent an important organ pool, but are seldom utilized clinically and require rapid retrieval and implantation. Experimental work with oxygenated perfusion during preservation has shown promising results by recovering function in these livers. This study compared sanguinous perfusion with cold storage for extended preservation of the NHBD liver in a porcine model.

METHODS: Porcine livers were subjected to 60 min of in vivo total warm ischaemia before flushing, after which they were preserved by one of two methods: group 1 (n = 4), University of Wisconsin (UW) solution by standard cold storage for 24 h; …

Efficiency Of Shear-Induced Agglomeration Of Particulate Suspensions Subjected To Bridging Flocculation, Sushant Agarwal May 2002

Efficiency Of Shear-Induced Agglomeration Of Particulate Suspensions Subjected To Bridging Flocculation, Sushant Agarwal

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examines the problem of shear-induced agglomeration of particles such as fillers and pigments in polymer solutions, where polymer molecules adsorb on the surface of particles and form a bridge between them causing agglomeration. The rate of agglomeration is usually obtained by multiplying the rate of collision of particles by the collision efficiency. In a laminar flow field, the collision frequency is readily given by Smoluchowski's expression. If agglomeration takes place by coagulation, the collision efficiency is well studied and the influences of hydrodynamic and colloidal forces are well understood. In case of polymer bridging, the collision efficiency is …
