University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

ABSTRACT
Two species of Hybosoridae, Hybosorus illigeri Reiche and Pachyplectrus laevis LeConte, are distributed in the United States. For the introduced species H. illigeri, three new country records are reported (Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Venezuela); six new state records are recorded in the United States (Arkansas, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, and Virginia); and 10 new state records are reported in Mexico (Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Michoacán, Nuevo León, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Querétaro, and Yucatán). Information on the predatory habits of H. illigeri and a report as a turfgrass pest in the state of Arizona are provided. Pachyplectrus …

Apocalipsis: La Obra Presente Y Futura De Dios (Estudio Del Libro De Apocalipsis), Viesturs Pavasars

Patterns And Processes Of Population Differentiation In The Chuckwalla (Sauromalus Obesus) In Southern Nevada, Paul C. Ustach May 2002

Patterns And Processes Of Population Differentiation In The Chuckwalla (Sauromalus Obesus) In Southern Nevada, Paul C. Ustach

Biology

I examined both present-day and historical patterns in the herbivorous desert lizard, Sauromalus obesus (chuckwalla), within the Mojave Desert ecoregion in Nevada. My goal was to determine the process or processes that led to their present-day distribution. I expected to recover distinct haplotypes unique to each mountain range. These unique haplotypes were expected to reveal a pattern of geographic partitioning with sequence divergence among populations increasing as a function of distance. I characterized the distribution of chuckwallas in Nevada by means of a simple model using a geographic information system (GIS). This simple model was used to enhance sampling efficiency …

Auditory Stimulation And Its Effect On Spatial Temporal Ability, Cynthia G. Edwards May 2002

Auditory Stimulation And Its Effect On Spatial Temporal Ability, Cynthia G. Edwards

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This thesis was designed to detect the type of spatial ability most effected by auditory stimulation, as described in the Mozart effect. Previous research has shown enhancement of performance on the paper-folding and cutting subtest of the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale IV with failures to replicate in research using other measures. Seventy-five college students enrolled in introductory psychology classes were exposed to one of three types of auditory stimulation, followed by two measures of spatial ability. The Purdue Visualization of Developments test correlates with tests of spatial orientation and require analytical processing, while the Vandenberg and Kuse Mental Rotation Test is …

Artificial Keys To The Genera Of Living Stalked Crinoids (Echinodermata), Michel Roux, Charles G. Messing, Nadia Améziane

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Two practical, illustrated, dichotomous keys to the 29 genera of living stalked crinoids are provided: one for entire animals and one for stalk ossicles and fragments. These are accompanied by (1) an overview of taxonomically important morphology, and (2) an alphabetical list by family and genus of the ∼95 nominal living species and their distribution by region. This is the first compilation of such data for all living stalked crinoids since Carpenter (1884) recognized 27 species in six genera in his monograph based on the H.M.S. CHALLENGER Expedition collection.

The Effect Of Different Modes Of Communication For The Deaf Student On Verbal Achievement, Maureen A. Dugan

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation compared hearing-impaired populations that have been educated with and primarily communicated with either the use of Sign Language, Cued Speech, or the Oral Method. The purpose of the study is to give an overall picture of how each method impacts the hearing-impaired learner.

The sample of this study was hearing impaired males and females over the age of 18 who have taken either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). All had a significant hearing loss labeled as profound and none were considered mild losses.

A sixteen-question survey was given to the participants consisting …

Book Review: Wild Stone Heart: An Apprentice In The Fields By Sharon Butala, Bill Draper Finlaw May 2002

Book Review: Wild Stone Heart: An Apprentice In The Fields By Sharon Butala, Bill Draper Finlaw

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In the aftermath of September 11th, the recommendation of a book by what the Toronto Star called "one of this country's true visionaries" may seem an ill-afforded luxury. Butala's odyssey may become all the more suspect when we realize that her book centers on walking in a field in southwest Saskatchewan. How might such a book address the smell of burning metal and flesh?

Actually, quite well. Wild Stone Heart asks us to descend into an underworld of both grief and possibility which works in, with, and under the land upon which Butala traverses. She envisions "layers of presence" where …

Book Review: Spirit Beings And Sun Dancers: Black Hawk’S Vision Of The Lakota World By Janet Catherine Berlo, James D. Keyser May 2002

Book Review: Spirit Beings And Sun Dancers: Black Hawk’S Vision Of The Lakota World By Janet Catherine Berlo, James D. Keyser

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In 1880 the Lakota warrior Black Hawk drew a series of seventy-six ledger drawings in exchange for credit at William Caton’s Cheyenne River Reservation trade store. In 1994, these drawings were purchased for the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York. Working with Sioux elders, Janet Berlo has analyzed Black Hawk’s drawings in a beautiful book that will interest Plains scholars. As an artist, Black Hawk drew seventeen typical ledger art warfare scenes, but probably more valuable are the drawings of his visions, Sioux cosmology and ceremonies, and even enemy Crow warriors. He also drew seventeen natural history studies showing …

William Jennings Bryan: Boy Orator, Broken Man, And The "Evolution" Of America's Public Philosophy, Troy A. Murphy May 2002

William Jennings Bryan: Boy Orator, Broken Man, And The "Evolution" Of America's Public Philosophy, Troy A. Murphy

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Perhaps more than any other figure in American history, William Jennings Bryan is remembered for specific and identifiable moments of rhetorical action: the much-revered 1896 "Cross of Gold" speech and the much-maligned Scopes "monkey trial" of 1925. The dissonance between these two events, at least with respect to the ways in which political and rhetorical history has traditionally recorded them, could not be more striking. Bryan, the "Boy Orator," was, at thirty-six years, the youngest and most left-leaning candidate ever to receive a major party nomination for the US presidency. He is often regarded as the founder of the modern …

Book Review: The Natural West: Environmental History In The Great Plains And Rocky Mountains By Dan Flores, Emily Greenwald May 2002

Book Review: The Natural West: Environmental History In The Great Plains And Rocky Mountains By Dan Flores, Emily Greenwald

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Prolific environmental historian Dan Flores has gathered together and revised many of his previously-published short works in The Natural West. Two ideas link the essays together: genetic evolution that has produced ingrained, even instinctive, environmental behaviors in humans; and the West's distinctiveness, deriving not from aridity but from the ecological (and historical) interrelationships of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains.

Drawing from the fields of sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, Flores argues that humans are revolutionarily adapted to transform the environment in order to perpetuate the species. But, he admits, "I can't imagine that many historians are going to …

Changes In Sugar Concentration And Volume Of Nectar In Centropogon Solanifolius (Campanulaceae), May 2002, Jeffrey Benjamin Sanders May 2002

Changes In Sugar Concentration And Volume Of Nectar In Centropogon Solanifolius (Campanulaceae), May 2002, Jeffrey Benjamin Sanders

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Changes in both the sugar concentration and nectar volume produced by hummingbird-pollinated plants may be evolved features to dictate the actions of the pollinators to optimize reproductive success in the flower. This study attempts to determine the changes in sugar concentration and nectar volume produced over the lifespan of Centropogon solanifolius (Campanulaceae), a hummingbird-pollinated flower. Hummingbird mites (Ascidae) data was examined to look for correlations between colonization and nectar volume. Nectar volume and sugar concentration were recorded for bagged flowers rose early in the plants life and slowed as the chance of the flower already being pollinated increased. Mite colonization …

The Population Structure Of Hummingbird Flower Mites In Centropogon Solanifolius (Campanulaceae), May 2002, Shelly Gordon May 2002

The Population Structure Of Hummingbird Flower Mites In Centropogon Solanifolius (Campanulaceae), May 2002, Shelly Gordon

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Hummingbird flower mites of the genus Rhinoseius (Mesostigmata: Ascidae) are nectar thieves of several species of cloud forest plants, including Centropogon solanifolius (Campanulaceae). Rhinoseius sp. disperses by riding on the bills of the hummingbirds that pollinate the flowers. The population size, flower colonization rate, and sex ratio of Rhinoseius sp. in C. solanifolius were examined in relation to flower age and the distance to the nearest open neighbor flower (NND) in Lower Montane Rain Forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Population size and the rate of flower colonization were not significantly influenced by the flower age or the NND. Flowers were …

Identification Of Neutralizing And Nonneutralizing Epitopes In The Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Gp5 Ectodomain, M. Ostrowski, J. A. Galeota, A. M. Jar, K. B. Platt, Fernando A. Osorio, O. J. Lopez May 2002

Identification Of Neutralizing And Nonneutralizing Epitopes In The Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Gp5 Ectodomain, M. Ostrowski, J. A. Galeota, A. M. Jar, K. B. Platt, Fernando A. Osorio, O. J. Lopez

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

After infection of swine with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), there is a rapid rise of PRRSV-specific nonneutralizing antibodies (NNA), while neutralizing antibodies (NA) are detectable not sooner than 3 weeks later. To characterize neutralizing epitopes, we selected phages from a 12-mer phage display library using anti-PRRSV neutralizing monoclonal antibody (MAb) ISU25-C1. In addition, phages carrying peptides recognized by swine antibodies with high seroneutralizing titer were isolated after subtracting from the library those clones binding to swine anti-PRRSV serum with no neutralizing activity. Two epitopes located in the ectodomain of PRRSV GP5 were identified. One of these epitopes, …

Copyright As A Rule Of Evidence, Douglas Gary Lichtman May 2002

Copyright As A Rule Of Evidence, Douglas Gary Lichtman

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Many copyright doctrines serve to exclude from the copyright regime cases particularly prone to evidentiary complexity. The implicit logic is that for these cases the social costs of litigation would likely outweigh the social benefits derived from offering copyright protection in the first place. Doctrines that serve this evidentiary function include some doctrines where an evidentiary purpose is readily apparent, for example the requirement that eligible works be fixed in tangible form, and some where the link is quite subtle, for example the rule against protecting work that lacks creativity. Understanding these doctrines in this light helps to refine their …

Seeds Of Distrust: Federal Regulation Of Genetically Modified Foods, Thomas O. Mcgarity May 2002

Seeds Of Distrust: Federal Regulation Of Genetically Modified Foods, Thomas O. Mcgarity

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

This Article describes and evaluates the existing federal regulatory regime for protecting public health from risks posed by foods derived from GM plants. Part I briefly describes the technology involved in genetically modifying plants and relates the ongoing debates over the risks and benefits of GM food plants. Part II examines in detail the regulatory regime that has evolved in the United States to regulate the safety of GM foods, focusing in particular upon the pervasive role that the substantial equivalence doctrine has played in that regime. Finally, Part III suggests a more precautionary approach toward regulating GM foods that …
