Searching For A Sense Of Control: The Challenge Presented By Community Conflicts Over Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Nancy A. Welsh, Barbara Gray
Searching For A Sense Of Control: The Challenge Presented By Community Conflicts Over Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations, Nancy A. Welsh, Barbara Gray
Faculty Scholarship
The growth in the number of concentrated animal feeding operations ("CAFOs"), particularly those involved in swine production, has brought with it increased community concern and outright conflict in many communities across the United States.' Most commentators have focused upon anticipated outcomes to explain the contentiousness of CAFO-related disputes.2 Meanwhile, even though the social dynamics that contribute to the development and escalation of conflicts over CAFOs parallel those exhibited in other kinds of community conflicts, little research has systematically examined the social dynamics associated with CAFO conflicts. One exception to this deficiency is recent work conducted by a team of researchers …
Analysis Of The Wilderness Experience On Commercially Guided Trips, Norma P. Nickerson, Clint Cook
Analysis Of The Wilderness Experience On Commercially Guided Trips, Norma P. Nickerson, Clint Cook
Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research Publications
The purpose of this study was to describe commercially guided wilderness visitor experiences and the factors that influence the experience. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex (BMWC) was the area chosen for the study. Forty-one clients were interviewed at the trailhead exit immediately following their commercially guided horsepack trip into the BMWC. Five common Experience dimensions emerged from the data.

A Vascular Flora Of Choccolocco Creek: Calhoun, Cleburne, And Talladega Counties, Alabama, Loretta Richardson Weninegar
Theses
A study of the vascular flora of the wetland species of Choccolocco Creek, its floodplain, and other sensitive areas within the Choccolocco Creek watershed was conducted from March 1994 to May 2002. The creek, which originates in the Talladega National Forest in Cleburne County, is located in northeast Alabama. It flows in a south/southwest direction along the eastern border of Calhoun County and across northern Talladega County to its confluence with Logan Martin Lake near Talladega, Alabama. The floodplain occupies 6,514.67 hectares of the watershed that consists of 97,128 hectares of land in the three county study area.
The bulk …

Luminous Days, Mitchell S. Jackson
Dissertations and Theses
Luminous Days is a representation of my artistic vision, literary goals, and social influences. Artistically, I intend to create fiction that is aesthetically appealing. This aesthetic appeal includes the presence of a distinct narrative voice, realistically rendered settings, multidimensional characters, meticulous attention to diction, and sentence construction. The literary goal I hold in the highest regard is the creation of a body of work that demonstrates continued growth in my craft.
What I intend to render in my thesis is an accurate portrayal of the effects that drugs on the lives of my characters, and more specifically the relational strains …

Identification Of The Vibrio Cholerae Enterobactin Receptors Vcta And Irga: Irga Is Not Required For Virulence, Alexandra R. Mey, Elizabeth E. Wyckoff, Amanda G. Oglesby, Eva Rab, Ronald K. Taylor, Shelley M. Payne
Dartmouth Scholarship
The gram-negative enteric pathogen Vibrio cholerae requires iron for growth. V. cholerae has multiple iron acquisition systems, including utilization of heme and hemoglobin, synthesis and transport of the catechol siderophore vibriobactin, and transport of several siderophores that it does not itself make. One siderophore that V. cholerae transports, but does not make, is enterobactin. Enterobactin transport requires TonB and is independent of the vibriobactin receptor ViuA. In this study, two candidate enterobactin receptor genes, irgA (VC0475) and vctA (VCA0232), were identified by analysis of the V. cholerae genomic sequence. A single mutation in either of these genes did not significantly …

How To Measure Total Dissolved Solids (Tds) Using The Hanna Portable Conductivity Meter, Julie Walker, Chuck Ullery
How To Measure Total Dissolved Solids (Tds) Using The Hanna Portable Conductivity Meter, Julie Walker, Chuck Ullery
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
The HANNA D4 portable conductivity meter allows you to quickly estimate the amount of total dissolved solids (TDS) present in a water sample. To obtain valid measurements, you need to follow proper procedures in calibrating, rinsing, and measuring. Here is a step-by-step procedure for two HANNA D4 model meters, along with instructions for converting the meter reading of each meter to TDS (ppm). Depending on which meter you have, the actual meter reading will be different, but EC or TDS results are the same.
Hostile Environment Actions, Title Vii, And The Ada: The Limits Of The Copy-And-Paste Function, Lisa Eichhorn
Hostile Environment Actions, Title Vii, And The Ada: The Limits Of The Copy-And-Paste Function, Lisa Eichhorn
Washington Law Review
Two federal circuits, borrowing from Title VII jurisprudence, recently recognized a cause of action for a disability-based hostile environment under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Neither opinion, however, considered how the analysis of a disability-based hostile environment claim under the ADA might differ from that of a race- or sex-based hostile environment claim under Title VII. This Article examines the differing theories of equality underlying the two statutes and argues that, because the statutes prohibit discrimination in fundamentally different ways, courts must resist the temptation to copy and paste Title VII doctrine into ADA hostile environment opinions. This Article …

Insulin Enhances Amylase And Lipase Activity In The Pancreas Of Streptozotocin-Diabetic Rats. An In Vivo Study, Adib A. Aughsteen, Faisal I. Mohammed
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the biochemical effect of in vivo insulin therapy on the amylase and lipase activities in the pancreatic acinar cells of streptozotocin-diabetic rats, and to detect any possible regeneration in the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans using transmission electron microscopy. METHODS: Adult male albino Fischer-344 rats were divided into 3 groups, the first group received drug vehicle and served as controls, the 2nd group was made diabetic with a single intravenous dose of streptozotocin (75 mg/kg body weight), while the 3rd group was made diabetic as in its 2nd group but the rats were treated with …

Missing In Action: Research On The Accountability Of Multicultural, Inclusive Teacher Education, Sheryl V. Taylor, Donna M. Sobel
Missing In Action: Research On The Accountability Of Multicultural, Inclusive Teacher Education, Sheryl V. Taylor, Donna M. Sobel
Essays in Education
While a substantial amount of research has been conducted on the effects of various teacher education programs to prepare teachers for multicultural, multilingual, inclusive classrooms, very little of it examines the impact of multicultural, inclusive teacher education on how pre- and inservice teachers actually teach children in the classroom. Few researchers have followed teachers into the classroom to find out if or what “carry over” exists from multicultural teacher education (Sleeter, 2001). Even if teachers show growth through their course work and learning experiences in multicultural education, what evidence is there that they are or are becoming strong teachers in …

Interpretation And Institutions, Cass R. Sunstein, Adrian Vermeule
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
To evaluate theories of interpretation, it is necessary to focus on institutional considerations—to ask how actual judges would use any proposed approach, and to investigate the possibility that an otherwise appealing approach will have unfortunate dynamic effects on private and public institutions. Notwithstanding this point, blindness to institutional considerations is pervasive. It can be found in the work of early commentators on interpretation, including that of Jeremy Bentham; in the influential work of H.L.A. Hart, Ronald Dworkin, and Henry Hart and Albert Sacks; and in much contemporary writing. This blindness to institutional considerations creates serious problems for the underlying theories. …
