Environmental History Of New England: William Cronon’S Changes In The Land, Tyler Veak Sep 2002

Environmental History Of New England: William Cronon’S Changes In The Land, Tyler Veak

Faculty Publications and Presentations

William Cronon’s Changes in the Land presaged a radical turn in environmental thought. His seminal work dramatically reconstructed our view of pre-colonial New England. He dismissed entirely the received history that portrayed pre-colonial America as an uninhabited pristine wilderness. In the process he gave Native Americans agency, and forever blurred the line between humans and nature. Since Changes it has become impossible to realistically think about humans as distinct from the “environment.”

A Modified Pelvic Fixation Technique Using Screws For The Treatment Of Hip Dysplasia In Dogs, Kiatpichet Komin, Marissak Kalpravidh, Atichat Brahmasa Sep 2002

A Modified Pelvic Fixation Technique Using Screws For The Treatment Of Hip Dysplasia In Dogs, Kiatpichet Komin, Marissak Kalpravidh, Atichat Brahmasa

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Eight dysplastic hips of seven dogs suffering from mild hip dysplasia, as classified by the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals (OFA), were treated using a modified pelvic fixation technique. After pelvic, ischial and ilial osteotomies, the pelvis was plane-adjusted and fixed using screws to increase the acetabular coverage over the femoral head. Evaluation was made of the animals gait, by hip palpation and by taking OFA standard, ventrodorsal radiographs before and immediately after the surgical operation, followed by further evaluation 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks later. The degree of acetabular coverage over the femoral head was …

Radiographic Evaluation Of Coxofemoral Joint Laxity In Dogs Part Ii: Comparison Of Stress - Radiographic Positioning Techniques In Dogs With Hip Dysplasia, Duangdaun Kaenkangploo, Phiwipha Kamonrat, Marissak Kalpravidh

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Two stress-radiographic positioning techniques for evaluation of coxofemoral joint laxity in dogs with hip dysplasia were compared with the standard technique. Forty, healthy, large breed dogs were divided into two groups of 20 dogs. Group 1 had normal hips. Group 2 were dogs with mild to moderate grade of hip dysplasia according to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) standard. Dogs were anesthetized and placed in dorsal recumbency before 3 radiographic techniques, standard hip-extended, 60O and 90O stress techniques, were taken. For the 60O stress technique, hind legs were extended in parallel to each other at 60O to the table …

The Application Of A Rt-Pcr Technique For The Diagnosis Of Canine Distemper Using Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells, Weerawan Tiwananthakorn, Sirichai Junsuwanaruk, Achariya Sailasuta, Anudep Rungsipipat, Somporn Techangamsuwan, Sapasiri Siripornprasert, Susumu Tateyama, Ryoji Yamaguchi, Kazuyuki Uchida

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The application of a Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) on 37 canine distemper cases was performed by the amplification of the nucleo-capsid gene derived from the canine distemper virus or CDV-infected mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The animals were divided into 2 groups according to their clinical signs. The first group of animals showed signs of distemper, such as respiratory and/or digestive signs. The second group showed the same signs as first group but with nervous involvements. The findings revealed that 74.1% (20/27) of group 1 tested positive with the RT-PCR assay compared to 60% (6/10) of group 2. These results suggested …

On The Location Of The Proto-Oceanic Homeland, John Edward Terrell, Terry L. Hunt, Joel Bradshaw Sep 2002

On The Location Of The Proto-Oceanic Homeland, John Edward Terrell, Terry L. Hunt, Joel Bradshaw

Pacific Studies

The linguist Malcolm Ross has advanced a series of inferences pointing to somewhere in the Bismarck Archipelago as the probable "homeland" in the Pacific of the Oceanic or Eastern Austronesian languages. This conclusion is not the only one that can be reached based on current linguistic evidence and inference. Reviewing why he has singled out the Bismarck Archipelago as the homeland is advisable, for Ross's deductions have been seen as substantial support for associating proto-Oceanic with what some archaeologists have characterized as the "Lapita cultural complex." We find, however, that social-network models based on alternative assumptions about linguistic variation and …

Linux As An Alternative To Windows On The Business Desktop, Donald A. Heier Sep 2002

Linux As An Alternative To Windows On The Business Desktop, Donald A. Heier

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to establish whether Linux can be an effective replacement to Microsoft Windows on a standard business desktop system. To be an effective replacement, Linux must offer all the features and usability to which the user is accustomed. These features include a graphical interface with point and click capabilities as well as applications that allow the user to complete their business tasks. Requirements of a business system are established based on the needs and expectations of the business computer user. Linux distributions were selected and tested against these requirements. If a distribution passes the requirements …

Domestic Regulation, Sovereignty, And Scientific Evidence Requirements: A Pessimistic View, Alan O. Sykes Sep 2002

Domestic Regulation, Sovereignty, And Scientific Evidence Requirements: A Pessimistic View, Alan O. Sykes

Chicago Journal of International Law

My thesis in this essay, however, is that such an accommodation is exceedingly difficult if not impossible. Meaningful scientific evidence requirements fundamentally conflict with regulatory sovereignty in all cases of serious scientific uncertainty. WTO law must then choose between an interpretation of scientific evidence requirements that essentially eviscerates them and defers to national judgments about "science," or an interpretation that gives them real bite at the expense of the capacity of national regulators to choose the level of risk that they will tolerate. The only middle ground lies in the rare cases where scientific uncertainty is remediable quickly at low …

Environmental Education And Understanding: The Case For Elementary Students In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2002, Clara Householder Sep 2002

Environmental Education And Understanding: The Case For Elementary Students In Monteverde, Costa Rica, September 2002, Clara Householder

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Education is the key to preserving biodiversity throughout the world. Not just education, but the environment in which the education takes place. In an attempt to compare the effectiveness of the environmental education program, I surveyed the 5th and 6th grade students at four of the area schools in Monteverde, Costa Rica. I also talked to the teachers about the curriculum and made visual observations of the classroom settings. I found that the Monteverde Friends School, Quaker school, and Creative Learning Center, environmental education school, had better scores than the public or Adventist schools, but that their demographics were very …
