Summer Field Report, June-July 2002, W. Ross Silcock
Summer Field Report, June-July 2002, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
The big news this summer was the drought which affected most of southern and western Nebraska. Conditions were particularly severe in the southern Panhandle and in the southwest. As one observer (DP) wryly noted: "The cool, cloudy weather in the sixties this morning was a welcome contrast to the stinkin' hot dirt blowing blast furnace in the low one hundreds that was in south central Nebraska Sunday afternoon [June 3]." Some comments from western Kansas by birder-rancher Scott Seltman are pertinent: "I think there's no question that because of the ongoing drought most farmers delayed their fieldwork this spring" perhaps …

A Mechanical System For Soil Reconstruction, John Patrick Fulton, Larry G. Wells, Timothy D. Smith
Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications
One of the most perplexing problems associated with reclaiming surface–mined lands is excessive compaction of soil due to the heavy earthmoving equipment used during the reclamation process. Over the years, some innovative material handling schemes have been devised to limit vehicle traffic during reclamation on reconstructed soil. However, final grading operations can often create root–limiting bulk densities, which affect plant growth and yield. The purpose of this article is to describe a mechanism designed at the University of Kentucky whereby mine soil can be reconstructed without introducing compaction caused by surface traffic in order for the soil to sustain desirable …

The Influence Of Remnant Tree Dispersal Syndromes On The Succession Of A Secondary Forest, September 2002, Scott A. Pattison
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
A large portion of Neotropical forests are being or have been cleared for agriculture and pasture. Conserving biodiversity in these areas, therefore, will depend on efforts to restore degraded habitat. In order to examine the influence of remnant trees on regeneration in a secondary tropical forest in Costa Rica, this study compared the species composition of plants and seedlings beneath a bird dispersed tree species, Zanthoxylum fagara (Rutaceae), and a ballistically dispersed tree species, Croton draco (Euphorbiaceae), There was no statistical difference found between the two, but when both data were combined, a higher percentage of bird and bat dispersed …
Hummingbird-Mediated Pollen Flow Across A Cloud Forest Edge, September 2002, Kate Freund
Hummingbird-Mediated Pollen Flow Across A Cloud Forest Edge, September 2002, Kate Freund
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Non-territorial hummingbirds that visit more than one species of flower in mixed order can deposit pollen on heterospecific stigmas as they forage. Pollen dispersed to incorrect species lowers the reproductive success of both the pollen donor and recipient plants. While highly specific relationships between some plants and their hummingbird pollinators probably evolved to reduce this type of heterospecific pollen flow, these relationships may break down in severely disturbed areas. This may lead to high rates of pollen deposition at inappropriate flowers. This study looked at hummingbird-mediated pollen flow across a primary cloud forest-pasture ecotone in Monteverde, Costa Rica. While virtually …

IIMB Management Review
The Biotechnology and Agriculture Panel saw Indira Ramaswamy, Fellow student, IIMB and M D Nair, consultant and author, discussing the opportunities and constraints of the biotechnology sector in India. Defining biotechnology as the use and manipulation of living organisms for the purpose of commercialisation, which includes the use of tissue culture, cell fusion, embryo transfer and recombinant DNA technology, Indira Ramaswamy detailed the market segmentation of biotechnology into health care, agriculture, industry and environmental applications and the Indian scenario vis a vis each of the segments. She described the key features of a biotechnology company and the main trend being …

Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein
Conformity And Dissent, Cass R. Sunstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
Much of the time, human beings do what others do. This is perfectly sensible, because the actions and statements of other people convey valuable information about what should be done. In addition, most people want the good opinion of others, and this desire promotes conformity. But conformity can lead both groups and institutions in unfortunate and even catastrophic directions. The most serious problem is that by following others, people fail to disclose what they know and believe, thus depriving society of important information. Those who dissent, and who reject the pressures imposed by others, perform valuable social functions, often at …
Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner
Probability Errors: Some Positive And Normative Implications For Tort And Contract Law, Eric A. Posner
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This paper examines the effect of tort rules on behavior if people are optimistic or insensitive relative to true probabilities. The paper shows that under certain conditions both strict liability and negligence cause levels of care that are higher than, or equal to, what is efficient (rather than lower). The paper also shows that under certain conditions strict liability and negligence cause the same level of activity among optimists (more than is efficient). Other implications for tort law are discussed, as are the sensitivity of the results to the choice of how to model probability errors. Implications for contract law, …

Comparative Proteome Analysis Of Brucella Melitensis Vaccine Strain Rev 1 And A Virulent Strain, 16m, Michel Eschenbrenner, Mary Ann Wagner, Troy A. Horn, Jo Ann Kraycer, Cesar V. Mujer, Sue Hagius, Philip Elzer, Vito G. Delvecchio
Faculty Publications
The genus Brucella consists of bacterial pathogens that cause brucellosis, a major zoonotic disease characterized by undulant fever and neurological disorders in humans. Among the different Brucella species, Brucella melitensis is considered the most virulent. Despite successful use in animals, the vaccine strains remain infectious for humans. To understand the mechanism of virulence in B. melitensis, the proteome of vaccine strain Rev 1 was analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and compared to that of virulent strain 16M. The two strains were grown under identical laboratory conditions. Computer-assisted analysis of the two B. melitensis proteomes revealed proteins expressed in either 16M …

Alteration Of Oriented Deposition Of Cellulose Microfibrils By Mutation Of A Katanin-Like Microtubule-Severing Protein, David H. Burk, Zheng Hua Ye
Faculty Publications
It has long been hypothesized that cortical microtubules (MTs) control the orientation of cellulose microfibril deposition, but no mutants with alterations of MT orientation have been shown to affect this process. We have shown previously that in Arabidopsis, the fra2 mutation causes aberrant cortical MT orientation and reduced cell elongation, and the gene responsible for the fra2 mutation encodes a katanin-like protein. In this study, using field emission scanning electron microscopy, we found that the fra2 mutation altered the normal orientation of cellulose microfibrils in walls of expanding cells. Although cellulose microfibrils in walls of wild-type cells were oriented transversely …
