New Techniques For The Design Of Diffractive Optical Devices For Optical Communications And Networking, Pojamarn Pojanasomboon, Okay K. Ersoy
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Three new techniques are proposed for the design of optical devices for various applications in optical communications and networking. The first algorithm shows that the nonperiodic grating-assisted directional coupler design can achieve not only the complete power transfer but also superior performances over the conventional periodic grating-assisted directional coupler in nonsynchronous waveguides. The second method is the newly proposed angular spectrum and beam propagation methods using the continuous and discrete sine transforms. This alternative approach is useful especially when the boundary conditions need to be zeroes, for example at the dielectric-metal interfaces. Search For New Physics Using Quaero: A General Interface To D0 Event Data, V. M. Abazov, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

We describe QUAERO, a method that (i) enables the automatic optimization of searches for physics beyond the standard model, and (ii) provides a mechanism for making high energy collider data generally available. We apply QUAERO to searches for standard model WW, ZZ , and tt̅ production, to searches for these objects produced through a new heavy resonance, and to the first direct search for W′→ WZ. Through this interface, we make three data sets collected by the D0 experiment at √s =1.8 TeV publicly available.

Speech delivered by WKU president Gary Ransdell at the National Governor's Association Center for Best Practices. In response to Governor Patton's challenges to create Programs of Distinction and enhance the state's capacity for economic development, we, at Western, have created a series of applied science centers. These centers are directing faculty talent toward creating a relevant curriculum in the sciences, toward solving environmental and material problems which limit economic development, and toward creating practice-based experiences for students. A by-product of these centers is a strengthened core curriculum which brings the applied sciences into focus for all WKU students.
