Urbanization and associated landscaping has increased the abundance of year-round habitat for waterfowl, resulting in vegetation damage, loss of recreational activities, air transportation mishaps and health hazards. As part of a research program to develop socially acceptable techniques for management of pest bird populations, we are evaluating nicarbazin as a contraceptive in pest and surrogate avian species. As reproductive studies with Canada Geese (Branta canadensis) are tedious due to the difficulty of conducting controlled field studies and/or breeding geese in captivity, we evaluated the effects of oral nicarbazin administration on the production and hatchability of chicken studies are …
Aristotle On Knowledge, Nous And The Problems Of Necessary Truth, Thomas Kiefer
Aristotle On Knowledge, Nous And The Problems Of Necessary Truth, Thomas Kiefer
The Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy Newsletter
In this paper, I argue that nous for Aristotle concerns necessary truths. (1) Nous is the solution to the dilemma raised in Posterior Analytics I.3. (2) Knowledge and nous have necessary truths as their subject matter, and are identical to this subject matter. (3) This position creates two problems concerning (i) the innateness of knowledge and nous, and (ii) the mind-dependency of necessary truths. (4) The end of DA III.5 reveals an attempt to solve (i) and (ii): The necessary truths of knowledge and nous are for us innate in a certain way, appear to come to be and pass …

Initial Survey Of The Butterflies And Skippers In The Vicinity Of The Buck Creek Serpentine Barrens, Clay County, North Carolina, Ronald R. Gatrelle
The Taxonomic Report of the International Lepidoptera Survey
Summary
General. Serpentine barrens are generally low in biotic diversity. However, these barrens are known to frequently harbor unusual species of plants and animals not usually found elsewhere. A survey was conducted from May 4 through October 2, 2001 in and around the Buck Creek Barrens located in Clay County, North Carolina, United States to document the butterfly and skipper taxa present at this location and their status. The site was visited 15 times during this period with at least two visits each month except September and October. A total of 76 different taxa were located with another 14 …
Tailoring Harmonic Radiation To Different Applications Using A Genetic Algorithm, L. Roos, M. B. Gaarde, A. L'Huillier
Tailoring Harmonic Radiation To Different Applications Using A Genetic Algorithm, L. Roos, M. B. Gaarde, A. L'Huillier
Faculty Publications
We use a genetic algorithm to theoretically optimize several properties of extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation, generated as high-order harmonics in xenon and argon. We maximize the harmonic pulse energy, minimize the pulse duration or optimize the temporal coherence by varying at the same time two or three parameters that are easily accessible in experiments, related to the characteristics of the laser beam and the nonlinear medium. For the 15th and 29th harmonics in argon, we find up to 109 photons per pulse, and pulse durations as short as 6 fs generated by a 50 fs laser pulse. We can also …

A Synopsis Of The Ferns And Fern Allies Of Nebraska, With Maps Of Their Distribution, Steven B. Rolfsmeier, Robert B. Kaul, David M. Sutherland
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
An annotated list and county-by-county distribution maps are presented for the 32 species of ferns and fern allies native to Nebraska, based upon field and herbarium studies and critical evaluation of the literature. Native to the state are Isoetes melanopoda, Selaginella rupestris, five species of Equisetum, and 25 species in 18 genera of ferns. Three native species are here verified for the first time, based upon recent collections: Matteuccia struthiopteris var. pensylvanica, Ophioglossum engelmannii, and Pellaeaglabella ssp. glabella. Isoetes melanopoda was rediscovered in 2000, the first record since 1941. Rejected are published reports …
Water Policy And Theoretical Models: Political, Bureaucratic And Class Dynamics In A Growth Economy, Kelly Michelle De Vine
Water Policy And Theoretical Models: Political, Bureaucratic And Class Dynamics In A Growth Economy, Kelly Michelle De Vine
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Water Policy and Theoretical Models: Political, Bureaucratic and Class Dynamics in a Growth Economy explores the three major socio-political theories of the state and public policy: pluralism, elite/managerialism and class-dialecticism using a case study of a series of policy decisions and outcomes during the period from 1989 to 1995 related to the Las Vegas Valley Water District which serves Las Vegas, Nevada. This time period is important due to the unprecedented levels of population growth experienced in the Las Vegas Valley and due to the extreme scarcity of water resources. This case study explores the issues of popular politics, bureaucratic …
Martin Bucer And The Church Fathers In The Cologne Reformation, Amy Nelson Burnett
Martin Bucer And The Church Fathers In The Cologne Reformation, Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Martin Bucer’s theology is perhaps the most difficult of all the major reformers to characterize because of its evolving nature. Although there are certainly fundamental features that remained constant through his career, what makes Bucer so unusual and so fascinating is the evolution of his thought as he worked out the implications of those fundamental beliefs and their specific applications over his years of experience as pastor, teacher and church organizer.

Scroll Waves In The Presence Of Slowly Varying Anisotropy With Application To The Heart, S. Setayeshgar, Andrew J. Bernoff
Scroll Waves In The Presence Of Slowly Varying Anisotropy With Application To The Heart, S. Setayeshgar, Andrew J. Bernoff
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
We consider the dynamics of scroll waves in the presence of rotating anisotropy, a model of the left ventricle of the heart in which the orientation of fibers in successive layers of tissue rotates. By choosing a coordinate system aligned with the fiber rotation and studying the phase dynamics of a straight but twisted scroll wave, we derive a Burgers’ equation with forcing associated with the fiber rotation rate. We present asymptotic solutions for scroll twist, verified by numerics, using a realistic fiber distribution profile. We make connection with earlier numerical and analytical work on scroll dynamics.

Earth Sciences
Nine ecosystem process models were used to predict CO2 and water vapor exchanges by a 150-year-old black spruce forest in central Canada during 1994–1996 to evaluate and improve the models. Three models had hourly time steps, five had daily time steps, and one had monthly time steps. Model input included site ecosystem characteristics and meteorology. Model predictions were compared to eddy covariance (EC) measurements of whole-ecosystem CO2exchange and evapotranspiration, to chamber measurements of nighttime moss-surface CO2release, and to ground-based estimates of annual gross primary production, net primary production, net ecosystem production (NEP), plant respiration, and …

Earth Sciences
Ecosystem models are useful tools for evaluating environmental controls on carbon and water cycles under past or future conditions. In this paper we compare annual carbon and water fluxes from nine boreal spruce forest ecosystem models in a series of sensitivity simulations. For each comparison, a single climate driver or forest site parameter was altered in a separate sensitivity run. Driver and parameter changes were prescribed principally to be large enough to identify and isolate any major differences in model responses, while also remaining within the range of variability that the boreal forest biome may be exposed to over a …

Open Source Software: A History, David Bretthauer
Open Source Software: A History, David Bretthauer
Published Works
In the 30 years from 1970-2000, open source software began as an assumption without a name or a clear alternative. It has evolved into a sophisticated movement which has produced some of the most stable and widely used software packages ever produced. This paper traces the evolution of three operating systems: GNU, BSD, and Linux, as well as the communities which have evolved with these systems and some of the commonly-used software packages developed using the open source model. It also discusses some of the major figures in open source software, and defines both “free software” and “open source software.”
