Whence Meiosis?, Anne M. Villeneuve, Kenneth J. Hillers

Biological Sciences

Sexual reproduction predominates among eukaryotic organisms on our planet. While debate continues over why this should be so, burgeoning genomic and functional information now allows us to begin to think reasonably about some of the events that may have occurred to make sex possible in the first place.

Generational Conflict In The Late Reformation: The Basel Paroxysm, Amy Nelson Burnett Sep 2001

Generational Conflict In The Late Reformation: The Basel Paroxysm, Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of History: Faculty Publications

It would be tempting to consider the outbreak of the Reformation as an episode of generational conflict, the ramifications of which continued during the next several generations of the sixteenth century. This article, however, focuses instead on a more limited instance of generational conflict, both temporally and geographically. Moreover, it looks not at the first generation of reformers but at their successors—-or, more precisely, at their successors’ successors—-at a time of transition from the second to the third generation of Protestant clergy.

Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Phosphorylates And Targets Inducible Camp Early Repressor To Ubiquitin-Mediated Destruction, Ghassan Yehia, Florence Schlotter, Reza Razavi, Alessandro Alessandrini, Carlos Molina

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Inducible cAMP early repressor (ICER) is an important mediator of cAMP antiproliferative activity that acts as a putative tumor suppressor gene product. In this study, we examined the regulation of ICER protein by phosphorylation and ubiquitination in human choriocarcinoma JEG-3 and mouse pituitary AtT20 cells. We found that cAMP stabilized ICER protein by inhibiting the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade. Activation of the MAPK pathway increased ICER phosphorylation. ICER phosphorylation was abrogated by inhibition of the MAPK pathway either by cAMP or directly by the MAPK inhibitor PD098059. The MAPKs extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 and 2 physically interact with ICER …

Getting Conspiratorial: Review Of: Conspiracy Culture: From Kennedy To The X-Files By Peter Knight, Martha Kuhlman Sep 2001

Getting Conspiratorial: Review Of: Conspiracy Culture: From Kennedy To The X-Files By Peter Knight, Martha Kuhlman

English and Cultural Studies Journal Articles

Peter Knight begins his foray into the conspiratorial corners of popular culture with the following provocation: conspiracy theories are no longer the “delusional rantings” of the fringe elements in society, but rather constitute “many people’s normal way of thinking about who they are and how the world works.” Conspiracy theories, in his view, reflect a general skepticism of governmental authority, covert actions, “official” versions of history, and, more broadly, express a philosophical anxiety about agency and causality in these postmodern, poststructural times—and he argues that this skepticism is largely justified.
