Just Deserts: An Experimental Study Of Distributive Justice Norms, John T. Scott, Richard E. Matland, Philip A. Michelbach, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

We present a theoretically Informed experimental study of distributive justice norms concerning income distribution. Our study consists of three related experiments that examine how individuals use four distinct allocation principles derived from both normative and empirical research— equality, merit, need, and efficiency— under a condition of impartiality. Our experiments are designed to investigate these principles and to determine how independent factors influence how individuals use them. We find that individuals tend to use all or most of these principles simultaneously in making distributive justice judgments, but that they weigh them differently according to various factors. In particular, we find an …

Hot Carbon Densities In The Exosphere Of Mars, Andrew F. Nagy, Michael W. Liemohn, Jane L. Fox, Jhoon Kim Oct 2001

Hot Carbon Densities In The Exosphere Of Mars, Andrew F. Nagy, Michael W. Liemohn, Jane L. Fox, Jhoon Kim

Physics Faculty Publications

Theoretical results of hot carbon densities in the exosphere of Mars are presented. The calculation is a two-step process: First a two-stream transport code is used to solve for the distribution function at the exobase, and then these results are used in a Liouville equation solution above the exobase. It is found that photodissociation of carbon monoxide is the largest source of hot carbon atoms in the upper atmosphere of Mars, larger than dissociative recombination of CO+ and much larger than the creation of hot carbon through collisions with hot oxygen atoms. It is also found that the high …

Photochemical Escape Of Atomic Carbon From Mars, Jane L. Fox, F. M. Bakalian Oct 2001

Photochemical Escape Of Atomic Carbon From Mars, Jane L. Fox, F. M. Bakalian

Physics Faculty Publications

We have modeled the escape fluxes of atomic carbon from the Martian atmosphere for low and high solar activities due to various photochemical escape mechanisms, including photodissociation of CO, dissociative recombination of CO+, electron impact dissociation and dissociative ionization of CO, photodissociative ionization of CO, and dissociative charge transfer of O++ to CO. Only photodissociation of CO and dissociative recombination of CO+ are found to be important, and the time-averaged escape flux is predicted to be controlled by the high solar activity values. The computed global average escape fluxes of C due to photodissociation of CO …

Solar Activity Variations Of The Venus Thermosphere/Ionosphere, Jane L. Fox, K. Y. Sung Oct 2001

Solar Activity Variations Of The Venus Thermosphere/Ionosphere, Jane L. Fox, K. Y. Sung

Physics Faculty Publications

We present models of the low and high solar activity thermospheres and ionospheres of Venus for a background atmosphere based largely on the VTS3 model of Hedin et al. [1983]. Our background model consists of 12 neutral species, and we compute the density profiles of 13 ions and 7 minor neutrals. We find that the peak production rates of some ions, such as CO2+ and N2+, vary approximately as the solar flux and that some, whose parent neutrals are photochemically produced, such as O+, N+, and C+, show variations …

Photographs Of Jerusalem, 1903, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Thomas R. Wells

BYU Studies

In 1903, just before the dramatic changes of the last century engulfed Palestine, Salt Lake City photographer Charles Ellis Johnson (1857-1926) found himself in Jerusalem, Johnson was the earliest Mormon professional photographer to capture views of the city and its inhabitants and thus freeze a unique, peaceful moment in time.

Islam: An Introduction And Bibliography, James A. Toronto, Cynthia Finlayson

BYU Studies

Long before the events of September 11, 2001, BYU Studies began working on this special issue focusing on Islam. The authors and editors who worked on this issue have tried to capture the spirit of a religion that provides guidance to the lives of millions of people worldwide. The ever expanding influence of Islam extends to the prominent and often controversial role that Islam plays in contemporary politics. In addition, Muslim theology, scripture, art, science, and communal values have made significant contributions to world civilization. And in quiet yet significant ways, dialogue and contact between Latter-day Saints and Muslims have …

Mormonism And Islam Through The Eyes Of A “Universal Historian”, James K. Lyon Oct 2001

Mormonism And Islam Through The Eyes Of A “Universal Historian”, James K. Lyon

BYU Studies

In 1912 the internationally known German historian Eduard Meyer published a book that ranked as a curiosity among his writings to that point. In it this remarkably prolific scholar, who in the previous thirty years had published a monumental five-volume history of the ancient world and 274 other books, treatises, and articles, explored two topics that were so alien to the mainstream of his previous work that it baffled his learned peers. Those topics were Mormonism and Islam. Entitled Ursprung und Geschichte der Mormonen, mit Exkursen über die Anfänge des Islâms und des Christentums (The origin and history of the …

Why Some Countries Are Rich And Some Are Poor, Douglass C. North Oct 2001

Why Some Countries Are Rich And Some Are Poor, Douglass C. North

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Professor North describes the difficulties encountered in promoting development: although economists are well aware of the conditions that promote productivity and creativity, only formal rules can be easily changed. Formal rules are but one part of a set of institutions in which people operate: informal norms of behavior and the enforcement mechanisms for both formal and informal rules have profound effects on human thought and activity. Economists have traditionally endeavored to impose simplistic sets of formal rules on developing countries; this model is largely ineffective because it ignores the role of culture and beliefs in shaping behavior. The difficult but …

A Comprehensive Approach To Conflicts Between Antidiscrimination Laws And Freedom Of Expressive Association After Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale, Adrianne K. Zahner Oct 2001

A Comprehensive Approach To Conflicts Between Antidiscrimination Laws And Freedom Of Expressive Association After Boy Scouts Of America V. Dale, Adrianne K. Zahner

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This Comment examines the United States Supreme Court decision in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, which held that New Jersey's Law Against Discrimination violated the First Amendment by preventing the Boy Scouts from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation in the selection of members and troop leaders. Zahner analyzes the Dale decision in light of prior freedom of expressive association case law, and reconciles inconsistencies by proposing a comprehensive framework for dealing with conflicts between antidiscrimination laws and freedom of expressive association. The proposed framework provides absolute protection for freedom of association for purely expressive groups, very …

The Asymmetry Of State Sovereign Immunity, Richard H. Seamon Oct 2001

The Asymmetry Of State Sovereign Immunity, Richard H. Seamon

Washington Law Review

This Article discusses whether a State has sovereign immunity from claims for just compensation. The Article concludes that the States are indeed immune from just-compensation suits brought against them in federal court; States are not necessarily immune, however, from just-compensation suits brought against them in their own courts of general jurisdiction. Thus, the States' immunity in federal court is not symmetrical to the States' immunity in their own courts. This asymmetry, the Article explains, is the result of the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Due Process Clause obligates a State to provide a means of paying just …
