The Early And Late Clinical Outcomes Of Diabetic Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction Treated By Primary Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty, Mingzong Zhao, Dayi Hu, Tianchang Li, Sanqing Jia
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
We study 339 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) consecutively treated by primary angioplasty (P-PTCA) patients were divided into diabetes group (63 cases) and non-diabetes group (276 cases). The baseline clinical characteristics, coronary angiogram and major cardiovascular events (MACE) were analysed. No significant differences were observed in coronary artery lesions between the 2 groups. During early follow-up (within 1 month), in diabetes group, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was lower (0.54±0.10 vs 0.60±0.13, P0.05). At late follow-up (mean 20.6±8.7 months), in diabetes group, the incidence of non-fatal heart failure and rate of target vessel revascularization increased (P0.05). Multivariate analysis indicated …

Abciximab Usage In Percutaneous Coronary Intervention In High-Risk Patients: Early And Late Outcomes, Anna Chan, Wilson Chan, Chun-Wai Chiu, Chi-Chiu Kum
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Background: Clinical adverse cardiac events have been significantly reduced by the adjunctive usage of Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitors in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, no information on its safety and efficacy is available for Asian.
Methods: All patients who had PCI together with abciximab in the Prince of Wales Hospital from August 1998 to December 2000 were included. Hospital records, ECG records and laboratory results were reviewed retrospectively. The primary composite endpoint including death, myocardial infarction, target vessel revascularization or bypass surgery was assessed at index hospitalization, at 1 month, and 6 months after PCI. The safety of …

Current Status Of Intracoronary Radiation Brachytherapy, On-Hing Kwok, Wing-Hing Chow, Ashley Chi-Kin Cheng
Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology
Percutaneous coronary intervention has become the predominant mode of revascularization worldwide. However, its intermediate- and long-term efficacy is limited by restenosis, despite advances in pharmacological therapy, facilitated angioplasty and device synergy. Vascular radiation brachytherapy (VBT), after undergoing painstaking clinical trials and evaluations, has emerged as a viable treatment option to tackle the vexing problem of restenosis. Brachytherapy programs have been set up in heart centers throughout the world. The explosion of research in cardiovascular radiation medicine is overwhelming. However, vascular brachytherapy itself has brought about new problems, like late thrombosis, edge effects, late stent mal-apposition, etc. From the practical perspective, …

CUP Faculty Research
MtaN (Multidrug Transporter Activation, N terminus) is a constitutive, transcriptionally active 109-residue truncation mutant, which contains only the N-terminal DNA-binding and dimerization domains of MerR family member Mta. The 2.75 Å resolution crystal structure of apo-MtaN reveals a winged helix-turn-helix protein with a protruding 8-turn helix (α5) that is involved in dimerization by the formation of an antiparallel coiled-coil. The hydrophobic core and helices α1 through α4 are structurally homologous to MerR family member BmrR bound to DNA, whereas one wing (Wing 1) is shifted. Differences between the orientation of α5 with respect to the core and the revolution of …

Attracting Consumers With Locally Grown Products, Food Processing Center
Food Processing Center: Reports
This report summarizes the initial findings of a survey of 500 households in the states of Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin. The primary grocery shopper in the household was surveyed for their attitudes and opinions on locally grown and produced food, organic and all-natural food and meat purchasing behaviors.
To access a respondent’s purchasing behavior, each respondent was asked to rank the importance of twelve attributes in determining the product or brand they purchase. The attributes most important to consumers in the region* include taste, quality, nutrition/healthfulness, and price. Seven in ten respondents said that it was very or extremely …

Charitable Contributions In Rural Nebraska: A Culture Of Giving, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Sam Cordes
Charitable Contributions In Rural Nebraska: A Culture Of Giving, John C. Allen, Rebecca J. Vogt, Sam Cordes
Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)
Nebraskans have a history of being charitable. This is important for the future of rural communities since many of them rely on local donations for their civic improvement projects and expansion of capital for new business development. Given that, do rural Nebraskans contribute annually to charitable causes? How much of their contributions go to their local community?
This report details 3,199 responses to the 2001 Nebraska Rural Poll, the sixth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions regarding their charitable giving. For all questions, comparisons are made among different respondent subgroups, e.g., comparisons …

Teachers' Perceptions Of And Interventions In Episodes Of Bullying In Schools, Carynn Townsend Wiggins
Teachers' Perceptions Of And Interventions In Episodes Of Bullying In Schools, Carynn Townsend Wiggins
Doctoral Dissertations
Bullying, defined as the repeated exposure of a less powerful person to negative actions by a more powerful person or group of people, is a serious problem in schools. There are often severe negative consequences, both short-term and long-term, for both the victim and the bully. The attitudes of teachers play a major role in determining the extent and the acceptance of bullying in schools.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of selected teachers in reference to bullying. Six teachers were chosen from regional and state teacher of the year competition during 1998–2000. In addition, six …
Automated Myocardial Infarction Diagnosis From Ecg, Chen Zhou
Automated Myocardial Infarction Diagnosis From Ecg, Chen Zhou
Doctoral Dissertations
In the present dissertation, an automated neural network-based ECG diagnosing system was designed to detect the presence of myocardial infarction based on the hypothesis that an artificial neural network-based ECG interpretation system may improve the clinical myocardial infarction. 137 patients were included. Among them 122 had myocardial infarction, but the remaining 15 were normal. The sensitivity and the specificity of present system were 92.2% and 50.7% respectively. The sensitivity was consistent with relevant research. The relatively low specificity results from the rippling of the low pass filtering. We can conclude that neural network-based system is a promising aid for the …
