The Motivational Basis Of Concessions And Compromise: Archival And Laboratory Studies, Carrie A. Langner, David G. Winter
The Motivational Basis Of Concessions And Compromise: Archival And Laboratory Studies, Carrie A. Langner, David G. Winter
Psychology and Child Development
A content analysis system for measuring positive concessions (offering concessions) and negative concessions (rejecting offered concessions) was introduced and validated through an archival study of government-to-government documents from 4 crises, 2 of which escalated to war and 2 of which were peacefully resolved. In the archival documents, concession making was positively associated with affiliation motivation and negatively associated with power motivation. A 2nd, laboratory experimental study confirmed these relationships and demonstrated priming effects of motive imagery and concession making, in a received diplomatic letter, on participants' responses. Finally, the motive imagery and concessions scores in participants' responses were related in …
Why Can't We Wait (To Spend) And The Law Of Unintended Consequences: Potential Negative Impact On Minority Employees From Well-Intentioned Organizational Compensation Practices, James R. Jones
Marketing and Management Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
In this time of increasing uncertainty about business viability and stability, many organizations are looking to gain control of their "bottom line" by strengthening the link between organizational outcomes and employee rewards. Long gone are the days of steadily and automatically increasing worker salaries as a hoped-for method of expanding productivity. Indeed, there is a school of thought that suggests that automatic pay increases act as a "demotivator" for many individuals. The more common approach currently is to utilize incentives (i.e., additional compensation/rewards given for performance beyond normal expectations) as a way of enhancing employee work motivation, thereby leading to …

Teachers Who Grow As Collaborative Leaders: The Rocky Road Of Support, Richard D. Sawyer
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
The following narratives examine three teachers over a course of ten years as they first entered teaching and began to collaborate with other teachers on curriculum. X-Ray Line Profiles From Parameterized Emission Within An Accelerating Stellar Wind, S. P. Owocki, David H. Cohen
X-Ray Line Profiles From Parameterized Emission Within An Accelerating Stellar Wind, S. P. Owocki, David H. Cohen
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works
Motivated by recent detections by the XMM and Chandra satellites of X-ray line emission from hot, luminous stars, we present synthetic line profiles for X-rays emitted within parameterized models of a hot-star wind. The X-ray line emission is taken to occur at a sharply defined comoving-frame resonance wavelength, which is Doppler-shifted by a stellar wind outflow parameterized by a "beta" velocity law, nu (r) = nu (infinity)(1-R-*/r)(beta). Above some initial onset radius for R-o X-ray emission, the radial variation of the emission filling factor is assumed to decline as a power law in radius, f (r) similar tor(-q). The computed …
From Commune To Household: Statistics And The Social Construction Of Chaianov's Theory Of Peasant Economy, David W. Darrow
From Commune To Household: Statistics And The Social Construction Of Chaianov's Theory Of Peasant Economy, David W. Darrow

Categorization plays an integral part in how we see and interpret the world. This is especially true when we attempt to comprehend the complexities of human society, where the heterogeneity of human activity across time and space demands that some criterion (class, gender, age, profession, etc.) be used to reduce the number of variables examined. From the mid-nineteenth century—as statistics evolved from the simple “political arithmetic” of tax collectors and army recruiters into a potential science of human behavior—categorizing the population became a contentious issue that reflected the social and political agendas of data collectors. At the same time, when …
