Site As A Measurement Of Place, Creighton Willis Oct 2001

Site As A Measurement Of Place, Creighton Willis

Architecture Thesis Prep

"PLacement and relationship of a city within its physical environment is a dynamic process that is revealed through its architecture and constructed (designed) interventions. The lift of this dynamic process deposits cicatrices, inscriptions, footprints, and artifacts within the city and place. These events inscribed in the landscape of a city reveal this changing relationship of city-environment. The contention is that a new construction within the city can actively manifest the current city landscape while also revealing the history of the place."

Traces Of Time: Urban Palimpsest And Transformations, Tomas B. Fernandez Oct 2001

Traces Of Time: Urban Palimpsest And Transformations, Tomas B. Fernandez

Architecture Thesis Prep

"I contend that the city is a deeply scored palimpsest that through specific natural, social, and cultural changes reveals its traces of permanence and temporality; therefore, to create in the urban realm is to respond to these vestiges of time through decoding and transformation, as if one was gently manipulating the genome of the city."

Flarr Pages #25: Rolf Hochhuth's Der Stellvertreter And The Culture Of Death, Edith Borchardt Oct 2001

Flarr Pages #25: Rolf Hochhuth's Der Stellvertreter And The Culture Of Death, Edith Borchardt

FLARR Pages

Hochhuth's play Der Siellvertreter (The Deputy) similarly raises moral issues and questions, specifically about the responsibility of individuals as part of greater entities (such as the medical profession, the defense apparatus, and the Church). It is a very dark and controversial play from the 1960' s, dealing with "the culture of death" by using representations of figures from the holocaust of WWII in Europe and Central Europe as characters, and it has sparked a great deal of debate, which continues to this day.

Flarr Pages #22: From Movies To Film: From Entertaining To Learning, Sonja Bertucci Oct 2001

Flarr Pages #22: From Movies To Film: From Entertaining To Learning, Sonja Bertucci

FLARR Pages

Today movies are a mass entertainment vehicle likely to be used as a class entertainment one. How to use movies so that the "didactical" nature of the relationship between student and teacher is not changed into a "commercial" relationship, where the student is the client and must be entertained, is a real question. To use movies in the classroom risks a kind of pop-culture education, but not to use them is to give up a potentially innovative method of teaching and resort only to what can be gained from words, books, and the like.
