Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Ordered Multinomial Parameters, Nicholas P. Jewell, John D. Kalbfleisch Oct 2001

Maximum Likelihood Estimation Of Ordered Multinomial Parameters, Nicholas P. Jewell, John D. Kalbfleisch

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The pool-adjacent violator-algorithm (Ayer, et al., 1955) has long been known to give the maximum likelihood estimator of a series of ordered binomial parameters, based on an independent observation from each distribution (see Barlow et al., 1972). This result has immediate application to estimation of a survival distribution based on current survival status at a set of monitoring times. This paper considers an extended problem of maximum likelihood estimation of a series of ‘ordered’ multinomial parameters. By making use of variants of the pool adjacent violator algorithm, we obtain a simple algorithm to compute the maximum likelihood estimator and demonstrate …

(Review) World History For Behavior Analysts: Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, And Steel, Stuart Vyse

Psychology Faculty Publications

The article examines two important messages for behavior analysts contained in the book "Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies," by Jared Diamond. It provides an environmentalist explanation of the different fates of the world's cultures that are compatible with the views of many behavior analysts. It details ways for behavior analysts to investigate the neglected forms of individual behavior.

How To Interpret Neural Networks In Terms Of Fuzzy Logic?, Sompong Dhompongsa, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen Oct 2001

How To Interpret Neural Networks In Terms Of Fuzzy Logic?, Sompong Dhompongsa, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Neural networks are a very efficient learning tool, e.g., for transforming an experience of an expert human controller into the design of an automatic controller. It is desirable to reformulate the neural network expression for the input-output function in terms most understandable to an expert controller, i.e., by using words from natural language. There are several methodologies for transforming such natural-language knowledge into a precise form; since these methodologies have to take into consideration the uncertainty (fuzziness) of natural language, they are usually called fuzzy logics.

The Earnings And Employment Of Nurses In An Era Of Cost Containment, Edward J. Schumacher Oct 2001

The Earnings And Employment Of Nurses In An Era Of Cost Containment, Edward J. Schumacher

Health Care Administration Faculty Research

Previous research has shown that from the 1980s through the early 1990s, nurses enjoyed substantial wage and employment gains that stemmed, to some extent, from increased labor demand. Using individual data for 1988-98 to compare nurses' fortunes with those of college-educated women and other workers in the health care industry, the author documents that nurses experienced a decline in real wages beginning in the early 1990s, at the same time that the skill premium for RNs, as reflected by the return to education and experience, was increasing. Changes in measured characteristics and their returns explain very little of the decline, …

Uncertainty In Corneille's Héraclius, Nina Ekstein Oct 2001

Uncertainty In Corneille's Héraclius, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Scholars agree that Héraclius (1646) occupies the extreme point of plot complication in the Cornelian oeuvre. Numerous events have occurred prior to the action of the play, events that are necessary to the spectators' understanding of what transpires onstage. Twenty years before the play opens, Phocas assassinated the emperor Maurice as well as his sons and took his throne. Léontine, the royal governess, switched the youngest of Maurice's sons, Héraclius, with her own son, thus sacrificing the latter's life so that the royal blood of Maurice might survive. Not long after, Léontine made a second substitution, this time switching …

Accunet/Ap Multimedia Archive, Larry Sheret

Librarian Research

The Multimedia Archive is the most extensive source of photographs and sound-clips available online. Photos, sound-clips, news text, and graphics are stored in four separate databases searchable from a single Web page. The photo and sound archives are the most important components of the site since they contain files that reach back to the 1840s and 1940s, respectively. The photographic database contains 750,000 images and the audio database 500,000 audio clips. There are also 800,000 news text files that date from January 1997, and 13,760 graphics that date from January 1999. Working in conjunction with AccuWeather, the world’s largest corporate …

Architecture As A Social Art: A School Of Visual Art In Washington, D.C., Rachel A. Roellke Oct 2001

Architecture As A Social Art: A School Of Visual Art In Washington, D.C., Rachel A. Roellke

Architecture Thesis Prep

"It is the contention of this thesis that architecture is a vehicle for communication that strengthens community identity by bringing art and the public together.

The thesis research explores the social role of visual art within community, including its social effects, its relationship to the surrounding physical and social context, and the formal elements of visual language. Architecture, as a form of public art, can be explored under the same parameters."

Vorhizomeid: Nodes Of Community Services Connecting Albany, Ny, Andrew Watkins

Architecture Thesis Prep

"The contention is to reposition terrain vague into the urban fabric recreating a continuum of the urban system while attempting to detract neither from the scale of the infrastructural system, nor that of the human body. Terrain vague muse be approached in a different manner than that of the traditional urban city. Establishing community through terrain vague should be done by measure of the forces, flows, and rhythms of space."
