Time-delay systems are common in industries. Direct analysis and synthesis of control systems with time delays are complicated and approximation methods such as Pade approximation are usually applied. However, the issues of control system robustness with respect to model uncertainties and approximation errors have not been sufficiently addressed. This dissertation focus on robustness of time-delay systems, especially robustness with respect to time delays, which has been discussed extensively using Lyapunov second method. Moreland clay (very fine, smectitic, thermic, Oxyaquic Hapluderts) derived from Red River alluvium does not exhibit redoximorphic features, though it is saturated for more than 2 months during the growing season. Sharkey clay (very-fine, smectitic, thermic Chromic Epiaquerts) derived from the Mississippi River alluvium exhibits redoximorphic features. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of energy sources and adjusted pH on Eh, pH, and iron transformation on these two Vertisols in Louisiana. The goal of this project is to introduce a successful remediation and restoration plan for a wetland and pine forest contaminated by an oil well blowout. A field study focused on the effectiveness of ammoniated bagasse (ABG) to enhance the bioremediation of the contaminated wetland. A comprehensive soil and vegetation greenhouse study investigated the effects of oil and brine on loblolly pine tree seedlings and the effectiveness of ABG to remove and remediate oil contaminated forest soils. This work demonstrates the use of pyrrole-terminated dendrimers (PTD)s for the oxidation-state-dependant encapsulation and release of various guest molecules. In order to achieve the goals of this research, a two-step approach was taken. The first portion of this doctoral work involved synthesis of low-generation (small number of peripheral groups) PTDs having a simple structure (DAB-Py x, X = 4, 8, 16) and studying the intramolecular oligomerization of the terminal pyrrole groups by well-known electrochemical methods. Sheath blight caused by fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani can cause significant yield loss in rice, especially in warm, high rainfall environments. Integrated pest management (IPM) is the key to sheath blight control. This system utilizes disease resistance, pesticides, cultural practices and biological control to control multiple pests. Silicon fertilization is an additional cultural practice that can reduce sheath blight severity and increase grain yield. Studies were conducted in the greenhouse and field to determine the effect of calcium silicate on sheath blight severity, rice grain yield, and leaf silicon concentration. Poetry slams are competitive poetry performances that have drawn increasing public attention in the last decade. Despite their widespread popularity, few people outside the poetry slam community understand the nature of the slam's appeal. This study examines the organizational culture of poetry slams, and attempts to define the characteristics that contribute to its meaning, value and success for those who participate in them. Terminos Lagoon in the southern Gulf of Mexico has 5 ecological subsystems: (1) fluvial lagoon systems (FLS) with permanent river discharge, low salinity, high turbidity and nutrients. (2) Central basin (CB) between marine and river conditions, intermediate salinity and variable transparency. (3) Inner littoral of Carmen Island (ILCI) with strong marine influence, high transparency and extensive seagrass meadows. Researchers and theorists have recognized the importance of multilevel research to gain a better understanding of organizational behavior. In particular, there is a need to assess leader-member exchange in the context within which the relationship takes place. This study assessed the associated effect of leader-member exchange and two contextual variables, team-member exchange and trust context, on individual performance, organizational citizenship behavior, fairness perceptions, and job satisfaction. At the individual level, supervisor ratings of leader-member exchange were positively associated with performance, organizational citizenship behavior directed at both individuals and the organization, fairness, and job satisfaction. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the works of Houari, Belghoul and Begag to question a prefabricated model of identity and press for new theories which value a concept of a constructed subjectivity and a rupture with a monolithic mentality. The main purpose of this study is to examine, through a series of close textual readings, how the text becomes the only dynamic space for a creative discourse of identity which emerges from an interstitial cultural space. The de Haas van Alphen (dHvA) effect, which measures the oscillatory component of the magnetization, in several CexLa1-x MIn5 (M = Rh, Co, Ir) alloys for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 has been studied in detail using torque, pulse field and field modulation techniques. The frequencies, associated extremal cross sectional areas of the Fermi surface and effective masses of each sample throughout each of the series are reported. In this study we addressed fundamental characteristics of image analysis in remote sensing, enumerated unavoidable problems in spectral analysis, and highlighted the spatial structure and features that increase information amount and measurement accuracy. We addressed the relationship between scale and spatial structure and the difficulties in characterizing them in complex remotely sensed images. This dissertation studies how small farmers of two ethnic groups manage the soil resource in a portion of Highland Guatemala that is considered marginal for crop production due to steep slopes. In the past, various groups concerned about environmental degradation tended to blame peasant farmers such as these for degrading the land resource through "primitive and backward" agricultural practices and a general lack of knowledge of the consequences of their actions. To address the role of parasites on subsequent antigenic challenge, humoral, lymphoproliferative and cytokine responses to a single intramuscular injection of keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH) were compared between groups of ponies with high, medium or low gastrointestinal parasite burdens. Heavy and moderately parasitised animals showed a trend towards reduced KLH-specific lymphoproliferation and reduced antigen specific total immunoglobulin, IgG(T) and IgA compared to lightly parasitised ponies. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from medium and heavily parasitised ponies also had significantly lower levels of IL-4. These data indicate that heavily parasitised animals have uniformly decreased cellular and humoral immune responses to …

Our model examines the allocation of medical research funds at the National Institutes of Health using public interest theory, incremental budgeting theory, and special interest group theory. We use the allocation of research funds among various diseases and measures of the burden of disease on the population to test the hypothesis that the N.I.H. is allocating funds on a pure public interest basis, to test for incremental budgeting effects, and to test for the influence of lobbying and other political variables representing special interest groups. A series of experiments was conducted to gain a better understanding of the effects of nutrition and hormonal manipulation on the reproductive processes of the horse. In Experiment 1, body condition score (BCS) and ultrasonic backfat measurements were highly correlated in mares, especially over the tailhead area. In Experiment 2, high BCS (HBCS) mares continued to ovulate during the winter anestrous period, whereas low BCS (LBCS) mares went deeply anestrous. Daily hormone concentrations were not affected by BCS, however, responses to hormonal challenges indicated cyclicity in HBCS mares and reproductive quiescence in LBCS mares. This dissertation used statistical and simulation modeling to examine population dynamics of brown shrimp, Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus ) aztecus. Brown shrimp are ideal to use in examining recruitment because shrimp represent a common life history strategy, because they are commercially important, and because there are extensive data available. In the first section of this dissertation, I used long-term monitoring data to examine correlative relationships between annual, stage-specific abundance estimates and environmental factors. Criticisms of traditional correlative studies were addressed by using a spatially and temporally-extensive dataset, by comparing stepwise multiple regression to Bayesian model averaging, and by investigating nonlinear relationships with …

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the addition of lipids, amino acids, and beta-cyclodextrin effects on commercial rice starch gelatinization, pasting, and retrogradation properties by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rapid visco analysis (RVA), and x-ray diffractometry (XRD). Analyses from commercial rice starch showed that the presence of 0.6% monopalmitin (MP) increased the peak viscosity (PV), minimum viscosity (MV), and final viscosity (FV) by 38, 27, and 72 RVU respectively. The pasting temperature was also increased by 6°C, whereas the total setback (TSB) was increased by 45 RVU. The Great White Heron was originally described as a distinct species (Ardea occidentalis), but is currently considered to be the white morph of a polymorphic Great Blue Heron subspecies (A. herodias occidentalis). Great White and Great Blue heron breeding ranges overlap in the Florida Keys (USA), providing an opportunity to evaluate the degree to which these two taxa are reproductively isolated. The current classification leads to predictions of no significant size difference (H01), random mate choice (H02), and no genetic divergence (H03) between sympatric white and blue herons. Jacques Leguerney, French composer who lived from 1906--1997, is at last gaining a much-deserved place in the history of the French melodie. Primarily a composer of melodie, Leguerney was strongly drawn to the poetry of the French Renaissance, with more than one-third of his songs utilizing the poetry of members of the French Renaissance School known as La Pleiade, founded by poet Pierre de Ronsard. Eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr.) is the fastest growing tree in southeastern United States with great potential as a biomass source. DNA-based molecular marker techniques are playing increasingly important roles in elucidating genetic diversity within species. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were employed to study genetic relationships among 57 clones from subregion Lower Mississippi river, West Central, and West Gulf. A total of 101 polymorphic RAPD markers were amplified from 14 primers. Six AFLP primer pairs resulted in a total of 457 polymorphic markers. Both RAPD and AFLP markers were able to uniquely …

This dissertation presents a novel and efficient diagnostically lossless compression scheme (predicted wavelet lossless compression method) for sets of magnetic resonance (MR) brain images, which are called 3-D MR brain images. This compression scheme provides 3-D MR brain images with the progressive and preliminary diagnosis capabilities. Between 45--55% of viscera, head, skin, intestine and slurries are generally generated as byproducts or waste from catfish filleting process. Our preliminary study showed that the crude fat content of the whole catfish viscera was 30--35% (wet basis) and the total o-3 fatty acids of oils recovered from the whole and/or portioned viscera ranged from 4.3--20.9 mg/g (dry basis). Catfish viscera may serve as an excellent source of health-promoting oil. Yield of purified (deodorized) catfish visceral oil was 65.7% and contained considerable amounts of DHA (1.21 mg/g of oil) and omega-3 fatty acid (4.6 mg/g of oil). A rapid microwave-assisted …

A mainly spectral code along with domain-decomposition, a combination that is not widely in use in complex problems, has been developed for the solution of the 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The code uses fully spectral or a combination of spectral-collocation and finite difference approximations and a 3-step splitting time-marching scheme. The developed Poisson solver utilizes matrix diagonalization and incorporates a direct sub-structuring method based on the influence matrix technique. Surveys of ichthyoplankton assemblages were conducted from four oil and gas platforms located in the northern Gulf of Mexico from November 1994 through July 1997. Diurnal collections, supplemented with light trap collections from the surface and -20 m depth, were taken quarterly during 1994 and 1995. Quarterly ichthyoplankton sampling at dawn and dusk only during 1996 and 1997 were supplemented with surface "lighted plankton net" collections. In 1912, five residents of Charleston, South Carolina purchased 5,000 acres of land in the area called "the Neck," a marshy and pestilential portion of the peninsula connecting the City of Charleston with the balance of South Carolina. On this property these leaders, tied to the progressive spirit sweeping America and the effort to create the New South, planned a new city called North Charleston. The 1,000-acre city was to be a complete community, with industrial, commercial, and residential activities to serve a population of 30,000 residents. A system is proposed for classifying the species occurring in the hypogean environment in relation to their ecological and evolutionary characteristics. The ecological criteria utilized relate to the preferred habitat of the animals (the epigean, endogean or hypogean environment) and the evolutionary criteria specify the grade of adaptive modification in three characteristics: reduction of eyes, amount of pigmentation and extent of elongation of the appendages.
