Service-Learning Delivers What Americans Want From Schools (New Poll Shows A Way To Improve Public Education), Academy For Educational Development

Service Learning, General

It is not news that: Americans are deeply concerned about the quality of public education,2 nor that almost half of them believe that improving schools should be our nation's highest priority.3 What is news is that Americans believe that service-learning can deliver what they expect from schools.

A new poll asked more than 1000 Americans4 about their views of K-12 education and service-learning, a way of teaching that integrates service projects into core academic curriculum. The poll was conducted by Roper Starch Worldwide for the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

Principles Of Good Practice For Service-Learning In Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson, Don Hill

Service Learning, General

The purpose of this document is to provide principles to guide the integration of service-learning into the preservice teacher education curriculum. The ten principles included here were developed by a group of over 80 teacher educators and service-learning practitioners from all regions of the U.S. who contributed their ideas and feedback in order to achieve consensus. (Contributors are listed in Appendix B). These principles of good practice can be used by teacher educators to design and assess their service-teaming activities, and by policy makers to guide decisions regarding resource allocation and program development.

Health Care Fraud And Abuse: A Tale Of Behavior Induced By Payment Structure, Arti K. Rai Jan 2001

Health Care Fraud And Abuse: A Tale Of Behavior Induced By Payment Structure, Arti K. Rai

Faculty Scholarship

The campaign to curtail "fraud and abuse" in the Medicare and Medicaid programs represents an attempt by regulators to evade more fundamental and difficult questions regarding cost and quality control. In the Medicare arena, tackling these larger questions will require dismantling the program's fee-for-service structure and imposing on providers financial incentives to evaluate carefully health care costs and benefits. Preparing Teachers For Educating Linguistically Diverse Students, Teresa Kennedy Jan 2001

Preparing Teachers For Educating Linguistically Diverse Students, Teresa Kennedy

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

The nations resident population on Census Day, April 1, 2000, was 281,421,906- a 13.2 percent increase over the 248, 709,873 counted in the 1990 census. Since the ethnic profile of the United States is steadily increasing, the current drive for educational reform must strive to rethink and restructure schools to serve all students well. The intended modification of curriculum and instructional practices necessary to achieve this goal must focus on challenging and engaging all students while articulating programs across grade levels in a coherent, sequential manner. The teaching contexts are changing direction, and so, too, must teacher training and staff …

Distance Learning: Creating A Teacher-As-Researcher Learning Environment Via The Internet, Gary C. Alexander

The researcher examined, analyzed, and described the learning process that took place among the teachers as novice on-line learners, between the teachers as teacher researchers, and the elements and processes that constituted their creation of a local learning community. The researcher met with the students at their request …

Sharing Stories Of Teaching, Thomas Mcfarland Jan 2001

Sharing Stories Of Teaching, Thomas Mcfarland

Northwest Journal of Teacher Education

Teaching is what matters most for improving student learning in the new millennium. Unfortunately, the teaching profession needs heros and heroines-it is sadly in need of caring teachers who have the ability to influence the general public. If teachers and teacher educators are to be influencers or public leaders, then they must consider the constraints of the unschooled mind as shown in the writings of Howard Gardner. They must present their expertise so that their ideas influence parents, students, and community members-not just other professionals. All teachers must model caring in their classroom. A few teachers or teacher educators need …
