Performativity And Performance: Representing The Tattooed Body., Mindy Elaine Fenske Jan 2001

Performativity And Performance: Representing The Tattooed Body., Mindy Elaine Fenske

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study I examine visual representations of tattooed bodies in three arenas of cultural production: tattoo conventions, advertising, and neo-tribal books. Through the methodological lens of genealogies of performance, I analyze these texts' construction of the tattooed body as classed, gendered, and exotic. I argue that contemporary representations of the tattooed body resist and reproduce discursive power regimes by surrogating prior cultural performances and representations of performance. I argue that contemporary visual representations of the tattooed body succeed in resisting discursive authority when they performatively cite multiple and transgressive authorities. I additionally indicate that the body in representation transgresses …

Teacher Efficacy, Administrator Efficacy, School Culture, And Leadership Density., Roy Wade Smith Jan 2001

Teacher Efficacy, Administrator Efficacy, School Culture, And Leadership Density., Roy Wade Smith

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This study examined new means for conceptualizing leadership in schools from a non-centrist perspective. Specifically, leadership in schools was conceived of, and studied as, an organizational construct rather than a set of personal attributes associated with positional authority. This non-centrist view of leadership is termed leadership density (Sergiovanni, 1987; Ellett, 1996), and is metaphorically represented in the study by characteristics of a small jazz combo. The primary focus of the study was the development of a new conceptual model of leadership, grounded within the small jazz combo metaphor. In an attempt to understand leadership from this new perspective, linkages between …

Framing And Counterframing Of The Middle East Peace Process In The Arab -Israeli Press: A Comparative Analysis Of "Assafir" And "The Jerusalem Post"., Houda Hanna El-Koussa

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Arabs and Israelis have been negotiating peace for the past ten years; however, the conflict still ignites with no apparent hope for any near resolution. Understanding the rhetorical construction of the peace reality may help in managing this conflict. This study examines the symbolic construction of the peace process in the Arab and Israeli press. It comparatively studies how the Arab and Israeli press, through language choice, define peace, elucidate its implications, and judge actors and actions involved in the peace process. This study identifies the metaphors used and the dominant rival frames constructed in two conflicting newspapers, Assafir …

English Immersion Program In Korea: Student Progress After Four Months Of Implementation., Jaiwon Jung Jan 2001

English Immersion Program In Korea: Student Progress After Four Months Of Implementation., Jaiwon Jung

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In Korea, efforts to teach a non-native language, such as English, to Korean students usually result in native speakers acquiring limited language abilities. As a result, the teaching of English has little effect upon making native speakers fluent in a non-native language. Many foreign language instructors in Korea attempt to find new teaching methods to improve the performance of students in foreign language proficiency. Among the various innovative approaches of the 20th century, research has shown that the immersion approach may be one of the most effective means. Thus this dissertation introduces the innovative immersion teaching methods for Korean school …

Essays On Semiparametric Estimation., Kang-Sun Lee Jan 2001

Essays On Semiparametric Estimation., Kang-Sun Lee

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation is primary concerned on the study of semiparametric estimation approaches. In the respect of the usage of econometric analysis that is evaluating theoretical relationship, the semiparametric analysis is useful to get the flexibility of functional form. The kernel-type nonparametric methods are used for semiparametric approaches in this dissertation. The first essay focuses upon performance of various bandwidth selectors in the local linear regression method. The results indicate that the variable bandwidth selector is superior to constant bandwidth selector in the more skewed data set or complicated functional form. LSCV bandwidth selector fit well in the simple functional form. …

The Relationship Between Water Vapor And Hurricane Track Using The Goes-8 Satellite., Melvin Francis Martin Jr Jan 2001

The Relationship Between Water Vapor And Hurricane Track Using The Goes-8 Satellite., Melvin Francis Martin Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Hurricanes are one of nature's most destructive forces. Hurricane intensity, track, and speed of motion are possibly the most important features to forecast in order to reduce the risk to life and property. This research uses the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) water vapor channel to investigate the relationship between water vapor and hurricane track. GOES 8 satellite data was collected at the Louisiana State University Earth Scan Laboratory for 30 Atlantic Basin tropical cyclones for the 1998, 1999, and 2000 hurricane seasons. GOES 8 water vapor channel radiance temperatures were smoothed and contoured at 1°Celsius intervals to display a …

Systematics Of Neotropical Satyrine Butterflies (Nymphalidae: Satyrinae: Euptychiina) Based On Larval Morphology And Dna Sequence Data And The Evolution Of Life History Traits., Debra Lynne Murray

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Although satyrine butterflies (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) are highly diverse and found worldwide in most terrestrial habitats, they have received little attention from systematists. This research focuses on one of the largest satyrine groups, the euptychiines, found from central United States to Argentina, with the greatest diversity in the Amazon. The subtribe Euptychiina has a troubled taxonomic history. Most genera were erected without diagnoses and placed within the subtribe without being examined. Before this project was initiated, little was known of their basic biology and morphology. Therefore, considerable attention was given to this area in my research. I describe the larvae …

This study evaluated the cognitive benefits and costs of incorporating biology-textbook and student-generated photographic images into the learning and assessment processes within a 10th grade biology classroom. The study implemented Wandersee's (2000) 20-Q Model of Image-Based Biology Test-Item Design (20-Q Model) to explore the use of photographic images to assess students' understanding of complex biological processes. A thorough review of the students' textbook using ScaleMaster R with PC Interface was also conducted. The photographs, diagrams, and other representations found in the textbook were measured to determine the percentage of each graphic depicted in the book and comparisons were made to …

A Dynamic Econometric Model For The United States Rice Market., Sung Chul No Jan 2001

A Dynamic Econometric Model For The United States Rice Market., Sung Chul No

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Over the past two decades, developments in time series analysis have brought new approaches for combining structural characteristics of market models with stochastic processes that better represent available data. One line of research is the works of Zellner and Palm, which is known as structural econometric and time series analysis (SEMTSA). The other approach is the structural vector autoregressive model (SVAR), which is an economic-theory enhancement to the standard VAR approach. Empirical evaluations of how well these approaches may work in explaining the dynamics of commodity markets are lacking. The current study provides an empirical evaluation of these two approaches …

Measurement Of Bottom Quark Production In Two -Photon Collisions., Sepehr Saremi Jan 2001

Measurement Of Bottom Quark Production In Two -Photon Collisions., Sepehr Saremi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The cross section for bottom quark production in two-photon collisions, sigma( e+e- → e+e- bb¯X), is measured for the first time. The measurement is performed with the L3 detector at the Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider at the European Center for Nuclear and Particle Physics (CERN). The data corresponds to 410 pb-1 taken at center-of-mass energies from 189 GeV to 202 GeV. Hadrons containing a bottom quark are identified by detecting electrons or muons from their semi-leptonic decays. The measured cross section is in excess of the Next to Leading Order QCD prediction by a factor of three.

Physicochemical, Functional And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Crawfish Chitin And Chitosan As Affected By Process Modification., Sandeep Kumar Rout Jan 2001

Physicochemical, Functional And Spectroscopic Analysis Of Crawfish Chitin And Chitosan As Affected By Process Modification., Sandeep Kumar Rout

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Traditional isolation of chitin from crawfish shells involves three sequential steps: demineralization (DM, removing calcium carbonate/phosphate), deproteinization (DP), and decolorization (DC, removing mainly astaxanthin). The first two steps can be reversed (i.e., DMP or DPM). Chitin is converted to chitosan by deacetylation (DA). Isolation steps may be shortened, depending on intended applications of chitosan. The first study investigated effects of (1) reversing sequence and (2) eliminating DP and DC steps on physicochemical and functional properties of chitosan and conversion efficiency of chitin. Twelve different processes: DM, DP, DPM, DMP, DPMC, DMPC, DMA, DMCA, DPMA, DMPA, DPMCA, DMPCA were investigated. DA …

The Call From The Stranger On A Journey Home: Curriculum As Creative Transformation Of Selfhood., Hongyu Wang Jan 2001

The Call From The Stranger On A Journey Home: Curriculum As Creative Transformation Of Selfhood., Hongyu Wang

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Both utilizing and problematizing the notions of stranger, home, journey, and self through cross-cultural inquiry, gender analysis, psychoanalysis, and autobiography, this study attempts to draw a new picture of the human self and a new vision of curriculum. It draws upon the works of three great thinkers: Michel Foucault, a French philosopher; Confucius, an ancient Chinese sage; and Julia Kristeva, a French psychoanalyst. Traveling through a contradictory yet generative space provided by the Foucaultian subject, the Confucian self, and the Kristevian subject, this study intends to address the issues of differences, connections, and creativity in depicting a new landscape of …

Reproductive biology of the cobia, Rachycentron canadum, is described from four coastal areas in the southern United States. Samples were obtained from recreational fishermen between December 1995 and November 1997 from the southeastern United States (Morehead City, NC, to Cape Canaveral, FL), the eastern Gulf of Mexico (Ft. Myers to Crystal River, FL), the north-central Gulf of Mexico (Destin, FL, to Chandeleur Islands, LA) and the western Gulf of Mexico (Port Aransas, TX). Histological evidence of spawning occurred from April through September in all areas. Some female cobia (17-32%) throughout the Gulf of Mexico had spent or regressed ovaries by …

Simulations Of Quasigeostrophic Currents Derived From Satellite Altimetry And Acoustic Tomography Of An Open Ocean Region, Max I. Yaremchuk, Dmitri A. Nechaev Jan 2001

Simulations Of Quasigeostrophic Currents Derived From Satellite Altimetry And Acoustic Tomography Of An Open Ocean Region, Max I. Yaremchuk, Dmitri A. Nechaev

Faculty Publications

Acoustic tomography (AT) and satellite altimetry (SA) measure properties of the ocean state with high temporal resolution. That makes these data suitable for long-term monitoring of mesoscale features in the open ocean regions, where the open boundaries are the major sources of model forecast uncertainties on timescales larger than 1 week. In this paper, a finite-difference quasigeostrophic model of an open ocean region is considered as a possible tool for interpolating AT-SA data in space and time. The assimilation algorithm is based upon the 4D variational data assimilation scheme controlled by the initial and boundary conditions of the model. The …

Identifying A Damped Oscillatory Thermohaline Mode In A General Circulation Model Using An Adjoint Model, Ziv Sirkes, Eli Tziperman Jan 2001

Identifying A Damped Oscillatory Thermohaline Mode In A General Circulation Model Using An Adjoint Model, Ziv Sirkes, Eli Tziperman

Faculty Publications

A damped oscillatory mode of the thermohaline circulation (THC), which may play a role in interdecadal climate variability, is identified in a global primitive equation model. This analysis is done under mixed boundary conditions using an adjoint of the primitive equation model. The linearized versus nonlinear stability behavior of the model is studied by comparing the adjoint analysis to runs of the fully nonlinear model. It is shown that a steady-state solution obtained under larger amplitude freshwater surface forcing (and hence with a weaker North Atlantic overturning) is unstable, while a steady-state solution with stronger THC is stable. In a …

Public Librarians And The Civil Rights Movement: Alabama, 1955-1965, Patterson Toby Graham Jan 2001

Public Librarians And The Civil Rights Movement: Alabama, 1955-1965, Patterson Toby Graham

Faculty Publications

Racial segregation in southern public libraries affected millions of African Americans before the Civil Rights movement, and for librarians in the South it created a conflict between professional and regional values. Ultimately, it was the efforts of black activists rather than librarians acting on their ethical impulses that ended library segregation. Librarians were constrained by local racial customs, Jim Crow laws, and, often, by their own racial attitudes. Also, librarians recognized that there were inherent dangers associated with defying the segregationists. There were a few, however, who challenged the racial status quo, and these individuals demonstrated the potential of librarians …

The Uneasy Marriage Of Export Incentives And The Income Tax, Mihir A. Desai, James R. Hines Jr. Jan 2001

The Uneasy Marriage Of Export Incentives And The Income Tax, Mihir A. Desai, James R. Hines Jr.

Articles

This paper investigates the economic effect of tax incentives for American exports. These incentives include a partial tax exemption for export profits (available by routing exports through foreign sales corporations) and the allocation of some export profits to foreign-source income for purposes of U.S. taxation. The analysis highlights three important aspects of these policies. First, official figures appear to understate dramatically the tax expenditures associated with some U.S. export incentives. Correctly measured, total export benefits provided through the income tax are equivalent to a 1-percent ad valorem subsidy. Second, the 1984 imposition of more rigorous requirements for obtaining export subsidies …

Women's International Tribunal On Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Christine M. Chinkin Jan 2001

Women's International Tribunal On Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Christine M. Chinkin

Articles

From December 8 to 12,2000, a peoples' tribunal, the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal 2000, sat in Tokyo, Japan. It was established to consider the criminal liability of leading high-ranking Japanese military and political officials and the separate responsibility of the state of Japan for rape and sexual slavery as crimes against humanity arising out of Japanese military activity in the Asia Pacific region in the 1930s and 1940s.

The immediate background to the tribunal's establishment was a series of events commencing in 1988 when the women's movement in the Republic of Korea began to learn of the research of …

Vision And Reality: Democracy And Citizenship Of Women In The Dayton Peace Accords, Christine M. Chinkin, Kate Paradine Jan 2001

Vision And Reality: Democracy And Citizenship Of Women In The Dayton Peace Accords, Christine M. Chinkin, Kate Paradine

Articles

This Article examines the gendered meanings of the concepts of democracy, citizenship, and human rights in the context of the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina (GFA), negotiated in Dayton, Ohio, in 1995. The Article is predicated upon the idea that a feminist theory and politics of citizenship and democracy "must embrace an internationalist agenda" and that in turn, for effectiveness and legitimacy, the internationalist agenda must embrace feminist thinking. This Article further argues that the GFA provided an opportunity for the renegotiation of a contested space where democratic concepts of access and participation and citizenship issues …

Federalism, Preclearance, And The Rehnquist Court, Ellen D. Katz Jan 2001

Federalism, Preclearance, And The Rehnquist Court, Ellen D. Katz

Articles

Lopez v. Monterey County is an odd decision. Justice O'Connor's majority opinion easily upholds the constitutionality of a broad construction of section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) in language reminiscent of the Warren Court. Acknowledging the "substantial 'federalism costs" resulting from the VRA's "federal intrusion into sensitive areas of state and local policymaking," Lopez recognizes that the Reconstruction Amendments "contemplate" this encroachment into realms "traditionally reserved to the States." Justice O'Connor affirms as constitutionally permissible the infringement that the section 5 preclearance process "by its nature" effects on state sovereignty, and applies section 5 broadly, holding the statute …

Hidden Agendas And Ripple Effects: Implications Of Four Recent Supreme Court Decisions For Forensic Mental Health Professionals, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2001

Hidden Agendas And Ripple Effects: Implications Of Four Recent Supreme Court Decisions For Forensic Mental Health Professionals, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

Supreme Court decisions have implications far beyond the legal principles they articulate, and it is essential that individuals working in the forensic mental health and correctional systems understand the extent to which such decisions can affect their practice and the facilities in which they work. The seemingly-unrelated cases of Godinez v. Moran (1993) (establishing a unitary standard for the determinations of competency to plead guilty, competency to waive counsel, and competency to stand trial), Kansas v. Hendricks (1997) (upholding the constitutionality of one state's “Sexually Violent Predator Act”), Pennsylvania Department of Corrections v. Yeskey (1998) (ruling that the Americans with …
