Diagnostic Test And Analytical Methods For Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems In Air-Conditioning Units, Qin Liu Jan 2001

Diagnostic Test And Analytical Methods For Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems In Air-Conditioning Units, Qin Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop test and analysis procedures to revise ASHRAE Standard 87.1 Standard for small (<36 in. diameter) propeller fans. Test and analysis procedures also need to be used to convert AHRAE Standard 87.1 - 1992 test results where the fan hub mobility is zero to corresponding results that will exist with a finite (nonzero) hub mobility; In this project, the vibration modes of a fan with three cambered blades were investigated. Experimental and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed on the fan blade and the fan-motor unit. The project compared the results obtained from the FEA and experimental modal analysis of the fan assembly. A very good correlation between FEA and the experimental modal analysis was found.

Burnt Rock Mound (26ck3601): Late Archaic And Ceramic Period Human Use Of A Northern Mojave Spring Mound, Hal Boyle Rager Jan 2001

Burnt Rock Mound (26ck3601): Late Archaic And Ceramic Period Human Use Of A Northern Mojave Spring Mound, Hal Boyle Rager

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Archaeological excavations and geological trenching at Burnt Rock Spring Mound, 26CK3601, in the northern Mojave Desert has revealed a complex relationship between paleohydrogeology and the prehistoric human use of the site. Multiple formation, accumulation, and deflation episodes since the Late Pleistocene and Holocene correlate with regional climatic models. The mound is located on the northwest periphery of the known extent of Ancestral Puebloan and Patayan peoples. Artifacts, especially micro-debitage, recovered from Late Holocene mound deposits suggest long-term use of this vital resource by Late Archaic and Ceramic peoples.

As the Theater of Nicaragua is interwoven in its politics, this paper will bring the reader a closer view of that reality. In an analysis of the history of the theater of Nicaragua, three women have stood out. These three women---Dona Gladys Ramirez de Espinoza, Socorro Bonilla Castellon, and Lucero Millan, have made the theater …

The Myth Of National Unity: President George W Bush's Rhetorical Reconstruction Of America, William Edward Belk Jan 2001

The Myth Of National Unity: President George W Bush's Rhetorical Reconstruction Of America, William Edward Belk

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

On Inaugural Day, President George W. Bush faced an unusually hostile audience. To reunite the nation, President Bush reached back to Americans' fundamental archetypal images, featuring the American founding myth. However, this reunification process was not complete until his speeches of September 14 and 20, 2001. Through his rhetorical transformation of worldwide terrorism into Evil, Bush reconstructed a broadly accepted image of America as Good and concurrently legitimated his ascendancy to the Presidency. However, myth also serves a less benign purpose of subtly promoting narrower ideology disguised as cultural tradition. Through analysis of Bush's three major speeches of 2001, this …

Specifically, parent's perceptions of their child's anxiety sensitivity and a secure attachment …

Investigating The Relationship Of Verbal Span And Spatial Span In A Combination Task, Miriam E Dunbar Jan 2001

Investigating The Relationship Of Verbal Span And Spatial Span In A Combination Task, Miriam E Dunbar

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Measurement of working memory span typically involves tasks designed to introduce stimuli to the unique slave systems. It is widely accepted that these isolated measurements indicate, at a relatively simple level, the span of the given working memory system. This study hypothesizes that separate working memory systems can be combined to enhance span length. To evaluate this hypothesis, the Corsi Block Task, a commonly used measure of spatial working memory, will be altered to include verbal information (colors). One hundred subjects completed the following typically used cognitive tasks to observe the relationship between verbal abilities in working memory and spatial …

After incubation, spheroids were sized (250--350 mum) and injected into the rat brain (10 spheroids per injection). Following the induction and development of glioblastoma multiforme tumors in vivo, Rowett nude rats were …

Complexity: Theoretical And Methodological Applications For Sociology, Kathryn A Gilpatric Jan 2001

Complexity: Theoretical And Methodological Applications For Sociology, Kathryn A Gilpatric

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the usefulness of Complexity as a new tool for sociology. Complexity, as its own branch of study, developed from the new science of Chaos. Recent paradigmatic disputes occurring in the scientific community have been the force of a growing sense of change in the way many different disciplines view complex systems. Since it is evident that social systems are typically highly complex, it makes sense that a scientific paradigm, which investigates the nature of complex systems, should also be applicable to social systems. Science now argues that the old Newtonian clockwork mentalities and classical experimental models cannot …

Characterization Of The Pleiotropic Effects Of The Drosophila Gene Mushroom Body Miniature B, Michael Louis Ginsburg Jan 2001

Characterization Of The Pleiotropic Effects Of The Drosophila Gene Mushroom Body Miniature B, Michael Louis Ginsburg

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The mushroom body miniature B ( mbmB) mutation has documented defects in adult mushroom body anatomy, olfactory memory and female fertility. In this thesis I report that mbmB mutants also have reduced viability and growth rate. I further demonstrate, using the mushroom body cell marker dachshund, that loss of mbmB function does not affect the early development of mushroom body neuroectoderm and neuroblasts. Additionally, I found the observed delay in growth and reduced viability were not manifested during embryonic development; Courtship behavior assays and immunohistochemical techniques were used to investigate causes of mbmB female sterility. Courtship involving mbmB females is …

Weighted Running: Effect On Impact And Oxygen Consumption, Wendy Ann Hibner Jan 2001

Weighted Running: Effect On Impact And Oxygen Consumption, Wendy Ann Hibner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate if runners adjust running style based on impact magnitude instead of running economy while wearing 30% added trunk weight. Runners ran overground at a self-selected pace with and without 30% added trunk weight. Impact magnitudes and other force parameters were analyzed. Runners also ran on a treadmill with 30% added trunk weight at their preferred stride frequency (PSF) and at +/-10% PSF. Oxygen consumption (VO2) and PSF were recorded. VO2 and PSF were greater during nonweighted compared to weighted running (p < 0.05). During weighted running, VO2 was greater when running at the -10% PSF than the PSF, but not different than the +10% PSF. The slightly greater stride frequency during weighted running compared to nonweighted running may be a strategy to keep F1 magnitudes constant concurrent with maintaining and economical gait pattern. It was concluded that individuals optimized on VO2 and impact concurrently.
