Cyclic Irrigation Of Turfgrass Using A Shallow Saline Aquifer, Christopher M Schaan Jan 2001

Cyclic Irrigation Of Turfgrass Using A Shallow Saline Aquifer, Christopher M Schaan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Utilization of poor quality waters in the urban landscape has the potential of saving large quantities of good quality water for higher priority uses. Bernudagrass in particular is well suited to be irrigated with poorer quality water. A two-year field study was conducted to determine the long-term effects of applying shallow saline aquifer water to two turfgrass sports fields. The water (0.69-- 3.4 dSm-1) was applied using cyclic irrigation during peak demand months (May--Oct). Treatments consisted of cycling saline water through the existing irrigation systems. Saline substitution of fresh water was set at 1, 2, 3 and 4 times per …

Craniofacial Morphology And The Consequences Of Intentional Cranial Deformation Among Prehistoric Andean Populations, Matthew Paul Rhode Jan 2001

Craniofacial Morphology And The Consequences Of Intentional Cranial Deformation Among Prehistoric Andean Populations, Matthew Paul Rhode

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This research examined the cultural practice of cranial deformation (annular and anteroposterior), and its effects on 27 craniometric measurements and biodistances among 350 prehistoric crania from the Azapa valley of northern Chile. Included among these 27 measurements were nine facial measurements previously considered to be unaffected by deformation. One-way ANOVA, Bonferroni multiple comparisons, and discriminant function analyses indicated that out of the 27 measurements were seven centrally located facial and basilar measurements unaffected by deformation: orbital breadth, palate (maxillo-alveolar) breadth, nasal breadth, basion-prosthion length, cranial base length, foramen magnum length, and foramen magnum breath. Included among these seven measurements were …

Terrorism In The News: A Constructionist Approach, Lisa Linn Sharp Jan 2001

Terrorism In The News: A Constructionist Approach, Lisa Linn Sharp

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines portrayals of terrorism in the New York Times during the 1990s. Using ethnographic content analysis, I analyze several dimensions of coverage including the emphasis given in articles to violence, the characterizations used to describe terrorists and their actions, the sources of information used in the reports, whether the cause of the terrorists are addressed, and the character of coverage for men and women terrorists. I argue that the portrayals focus on the most sensational and dramatic aspects of terrorism and authority's interpretations of the groups; they fail to provide readers an analysis of causes, contexts, and structural …

The 2000 Presidential Election: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Media Coverage, Jennifer Barbara Stein Jan 2001

The 2000 Presidential Election: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Media Coverage, Jennifer Barbara Stein

An Application Of The Kuleshov Experiment On Generation X: Testing Viewer Reactions To Editing, Giselle Touzard Jan 2001

An Application Of The Kuleshov Experiment On Generation X: Testing Viewer Reactions To Editing, Giselle Touzard

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Kuleshov Experiment, conducted in Russia in 1919, concluded that audiences find meaning in the juxtaposition of unrelated shots. This discovery was one of the earliest observations used to formulate the theory of montage. This study combines historical information related to the original experiment, editing techniques, and theories in visual literacy. This is a quasi-experiment applied to a new generation of viewers; A video that replicates the original experiment is used as a stimulus, and an instrument observes audience's reactions to editing. The assumption made is that a new generation of viewers will be capable of recognizing the lack of …

Characterization Of Perillyl Alcohol As A Cell Migration-Inhibiting Compound, Johanna Elizabeth Wagner Jan 2001

Characterization Of Perillyl Alcohol As A Cell Migration-Inhibiting Compound, Johanna Elizabeth Wagner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Inhibiting cancer cell migration could greatly improve the prognosis of cancer patients. Prior to commercialization of the Plopper laboratory designed a 96-well plate, we optimized our in vitro migration and cell viability assays to meet the standards set by the National Cancer Institute for use in a large-scale drug screen for anti-migration compounds. Using these assays, we measured the cytotoxicity and migration-inhibiting effect of dimethyl sulfuoxide, a drug solvent, in three cancer and one non-cancer cell lines. Next, we investigated plant-derived compounds called monoterpenes, known chemopreventive/chemotherapeutic agents, for non-cytotoxic, migration-inhibiting properties in MCF-10A normal and MDA-MB 435 cancerous breast cells. …

Clare Boothe Luce And The 1953--1954 Trieste Crisis, Jelena Velisavljevic Jan 2001

Clare Boothe Luce And The 1953--1954 Trieste Crisis, Jelena Velisavljevic

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

My paper argues that Clare Boothe Luce, American ambassador to Italy, greatly influenced the Trieste crisis and negotiations of 1953--1954. Luce's understanding of the Cold War in terms of aggressive anti-Communism against the Soviet Union in general and against Yugoslavia in particular, determined her actions during the Trieste negotiations. As a very powerful woman in the Eisenhower administration, Luce managed to make her voice heard on the highest levels and to direct the settlement in ways she thought best for the United States and its ally Italy. Although forceful reports she sent to the State Department and the major policymakers …

Evaluation Of In Situ Biodegradation Of Perchlorate In A Contaminated Site, Zhong Zhang Jan 2001

Evaluation Of In Situ Biodegradation Of Perchlorate In A Contaminated Site, Zhong Zhang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This thesis investigated parameters affecting perchlorate biodegradation in the Las Vegas Wash area in Las Vegas, NV. Perchlorate is known to interfere with the functioning of the thyroid gland of humans. Perchlorate concentrations along the Las Vegas Wash were found to range from zero to 1000 ppb, while perchlorate concentrations in the contaminated seepage were approximately 100 ppm. Microbial counts in 30 water samples from the Las Vegas Wash and the contaminated seepage indicated that indigenous perchlorate-reducing microbes are ubiquitous and present in reasonable numbers. In the contaminated area, natural perchlorate biodegradation seems to be limited by at least three …

The Presence Of Adverse Selection In The Las Vegas Resale Housing Market, Ryan Matthew Bledsoe Jan 2001

The Presence Of Adverse Selection In The Las Vegas Resale Housing Market, Ryan Matthew Bledsoe

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Adverse selection may affect the resale housing market. Sellers hold valuable information concerning the quality of their homes that is not directly available to buyers. If buyers are unable to identify quality, the relocation decision is different for owners of low and high-quality houses. Since information is asymmetric owners of low-quality houses are more likely to relocate than owners of high-quality houses, other things constant. Thus, I suggest that quality is decreasing in the number of times a house has been resold. The presence of a relationship between price and the number of times a house has been resold is …

Challenges For The New West: Economic Impacts Of Wilderness In Nevada's Rural Counties, Lesley Regina Argo Jan 2001

Challenges For The New West: Economic Impacts Of Wilderness In Nevada's Rural Counties, Lesley Regina Argo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Public lands designated as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System are removed from multiple-use management for protection of their natural condition. Opponents argue that "locking up" the natural resources on these lands through designation will undermine the rural economies in the west that are dependent upon extractive industries such as mining and logging. Proponents argue that the "Old West" reliance on extractive industries is declining and, in the "New West", wilderness promotes economic development in rural communities by preserving the amenity values that draw population and employment to the region. Characteristics of Nevada's economy, population and land challenge the …

Sedentism Among The Archaic Fisher-Folk Of Northern Chile: A Malacological Perspective, Sally D Llull-Billings

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Oxygen isotope analysis of shell material from the Camarones West Shell Midden and from the site of Quiani has revealed that year-round collection of shellfish for food by the people of the Chinchorro Culture was not practiced. Additional shell demographics from the site of Quiani further support the oxygen isotope results. Radiocarbon dating revealed that the midden sample spanned the Classic Chinchorro and Transitional Chinchorro epochs, from 5590 to 3830 B. P. Shell classification and quantification of these sites also revealed that shellfish collection and the types of shellfish harvested has been consistent from Chinchorro times to the present; This …

Increasing Parental Knowledge In Treatment Of Childhood Fever, Brian D Bishop Jan 2001

Increasing Parental Knowledge In Treatment Of Childhood Fever, Brian D Bishop

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fever is the single most common symptom that causes parents to seek medical attention for their young children (Kramer, Naimark, & Leduc, 1985). Parental lack of knowledge regarding the management of pediatric fever plays a roll in this phenomenon. The problem addressed in this study is inappropriate parental usage of emergency treatment resources for the treatment of non-emergent childhood fevers. This study tested if providing direct and indirect information about childhood fever and its treatment resulted in a decrease of inappropriate emergency room visits for non-emergent pediatric febrile illnesses for a select population; A quasi-experimental design was used with a …

A Qualitative Study Of The Perceived Psychosocial Outcomes Of Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lindsey Eva Bocchieri Jan 2001

A Qualitative Study Of The Perceived Psychosocial Outcomes Of Gastric Bypass Surgery, Lindsey Eva Bocchieri

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Attempts to understand postoperative psychosocial changes in the lives of individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity have (1) been guided by constructs emanating from the assumptions of researchers, and (2) have resulted in fragmented conclusions that catalogue changes without theoretically integrating them. Using unstructured and semi-structured interviews and in-depth focus groups, patients were asked in an open-ended fashion about the ways, if any, in which gastric bypass surgery had affected their lives. Grounded theory methodology was utilized in order to identify emergent themes and their interrelations, and build a meaningful, comprehensive theory of life after gastric …

The purpose of this study was to determine if screening tools from a self-reporting questionnaire, comprised of work-capacity questions, and physiological data, could be developed to predict treadmill test time when following a Bruce protocol. One hundred and eight subjects completed the questionnaire and performed treadmill tests. A stepwise regression analysis was used to develop equations from the research parameters established on the questionnaire, and resulted in two useful predictive equations, one for males and one for females. Results indicated 52 males and 33 females had actual treadmill times of six minutes or greater. The prediction equations predicted 59 males …

The Effects Of Irrigation And Nitrogen Management On Water Use Of Tall Fescue, Christopher Alan Brown Jan 2001

The Effects Of Irrigation And Nitrogen Management On Water Use Of Tall Fescue, Christopher Alan Brown

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) is a commonly cultivated turfgrass in Southern Nevada, one of North America's most arid climates. Recognized for its drought tolerance, tall fescue is nonetheless a significant water user in Southern Nevada. Since outdoor water use represents approximately 64% of all regional demand and peaks in the hot summer, efficient use of water on turfgrass such as tall fescue can make a significant contribution to water conservation as well as offset peak demand. Differing amounts of water were imposed, calculated as a leaching fraction (LF) of -0.40, -0.25, -0.15, 0.0 and +0.15 to reflect a continuum …

Mathematical Models For Interendothelial Cleft, Bin Chen Jan 2001

Mathematical Models For Interendothelial Cleft, Bin Chen

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Vascular endothelium is the principal barrier to, and regulator of, material exchange between circulating blood and the body tissues. Based on previous research in this field, two new theoretical models have been developed in this thesis. One is to investigate structural mechanisms in the regulation of microvessel permeability by cAMP. The other is to examine the charge effects of surface glycocalyx on microvessel permeability; To investigate the microstructural mechanisms of decreasing microvascular permeability induced by the enhancement of intraendothelial adenosine 3 ',5'-cyclic monophosphate (CAMP) levels, we extended the previous analytical model developed by Fu et al. (1994) for the interendothelial …

The Dichotomy In The Determinacy Of Certain Two-Person Infinite Games With Moves From {0,1}, Deborah Sue Fraker

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

We investigate certain well-known games from the field of set theory; namely, certain two-person games of perfect information with small complexity and with small infinite length. We consider games with moves from the natural numbers and games with moves from {0,1}. We show that the determinacy of open games with length o·n and with moves from {0,1} is true regardless of the existence of large cardinals for n ≥ 2. We show that this is not true, however, for some more complex games: For k ≥ 3 and n ≥ 2, the determinacy of P0k games with length o·n and …

Estimating Effective Discharge At Lehman Creek, Great Basin National Park, Nevada, Lisa A Glonek Jan 2001

Estimating Effective Discharge At Lehman Creek, Great Basin National Park, Nevada, Lisa A Glonek

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Effective discharge is defined as the streamflow that transports the most sediment over time and is therefore the flow that controls channel shape. Effective discharge was estimated for two sites along Lehman Creek, an alpine fluvial system. Site one (WL-1, 2951 m elevation) has an effective discharge of 0.083 m3/s and site two (WL-2, 2019 m elevation) has an effective discharge of 0.400 m3/s. Calculated bankfull discharges are 2.52 m3/s for WL-1 and 1.48 m3/s for WL-2. Bankfull/effective discharge ratios (b/e ratio) are 30.49 for WL-1 and 3.71 for WL-2. The b/e ratio difference may be due to the steeper …

Cenozoic Extension Superimposed On A Mesozoic Thrust Belt, Central Nevada, Joseph John Gilbert Jan 2001

Cenozoic Extension Superimposed On A Mesozoic Thrust Belt, Central Nevada, Joseph John Gilbert

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The central Nevada thrust belt (CNTB) is a north-south trending belt of contractile structures in the hinterland of the Sevier orogenic belt. This study tests the hypothesis that analysis and regional correlation of CNTB structures is possible after retrodeformation of younger extensional faults; The central Pancake Range underwent multiple episodes of Cenozoic extensional faulting. Fault sets generally strike N-S or NE-SW; one synvolcanic set strikes E-W. These normal fault sets: (1) form five temporally distinct episodes that correspond to regional tectonic events; (2) record a rotation in the stress field through time; and (3) locally developed within a three dimensional …

Paleoecology Of Upper Harkless Archaeocythan Reefs In Esmeralda County, Nevada, Melissa K Hicks Jan 2001

Paleoecology Of Upper Harkless Archaeocythan Reefs In Esmeralda County, Nevada, Melissa K Hicks

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Four previously unstudied reef localities occur in the upper Lower Cambrian (Bonnia-Olenellus Zone) in the Upper Harkless Formation in Esmeralda County, Nevada. These patch reefs were constructed on a shallow, carbonate platform in the subtidal zone by a consortium of archaeocyaths and calcimicrobes (Renalcis). A high diversity of dwelling organisms is found in varying quantities within and surrounding the reefs. Comparisons to the same age reefs in the Forteau Formation in Labrador, Canada preliminarily correlate these two localities. A comparison between modern sponges in Belize and archaeocyaths reveal similarities; Four phases of diagenesis occur showing synsedimentary, mixing zone, shallow and …

The dependent variables are stated below. (1) Sideswipe Crashes per Total Crashes; (2) Total Upstream Crashes per Total Crashes; (3) Total Crashes per AADT/10,000 per Intersection Lane Overall, the results of the analysis do not strongly support …

An Analysis Of Wealth Effect To Shareholders Of The Lodging Industry In Mergers And Acquisitions, Sung-Hwan Kim Jan 2001

An Analysis Of Wealth Effect To Shareholders Of The Lodging Industry In Mergers And Acquisitions, Sung-Hwan Kim

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study originated from the question of whether additional wealth gains from merger and acquisition activities accrued to shareholders of both acquiring and target hotel firms since there is no enough evidence related to the hospitality industry; The result indicated that corporate takeovers generate, on average, significant positive additional gains to shareholders of acquiring firms of non-casino hotel firms and shareholders of target firms of both non-casino and casino hotel firms. Shareholders of acquiring firms of non-casino hotel firms, on the other hand, earn "normal" returns from the takeover proposals. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a difference in …

Near-Optimal Broadcast In All-Port Wormhole-Routed Hypercubes Using Error-Correcting Codes, Hyosun Ko Jan 2001

Near-Optimal Broadcast In All-Port Wormhole-Routed Hypercubes Using Error-Correcting Codes, Hyosun Ko

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A new broadcasting method is presented for hypercubes with wormhole routing mechanism. The communication model assumed allows an n-dimensional hypercube to have at most n concurrent I/O communication along its ports. It assumes a distance insensitivity of (n + 1) with no intermediate reception capability for the nodes. The approach is based on determination of the set of nodes called stations in the hypercube. Once stations are identified, node disjoint paths are formed from the source to all stations. The broadcasting is accomplished first by sending the message to all stations, which will inform the rest of the nodes. To …

The Recent Growth Of The Las Vegas Valley And Its Effect On The Criminal Justice System, Scott William Larson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In order to succeed every city must offer its residents the opportunity and a prosperous quality of life. Local governments are charged with creating an environment which allows its citizens to find and exploit these opportunities. However, often local governments pursue their objective without planning for the future. As a result, the economic initiatives pursued by local governments may cause a period of unrestrained growth, which can lead to unforeseen consequences, such as pollution, traffic, and crime. A person's quality of life will diminish if he or she does not feel safe; This thesis will focus on the affects growth …

Precipitating And Prophylactic Factors Contributing To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology In Maltreated Children, Lisa Marie Linning Jan 2001

Precipitating And Prophylactic Factors Contributing To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptomatology In Maltreated Children, Lisa Marie Linning

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined mediating factors that lead to, or buffer against, development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after child maltreatment. Fifty-five children aged 8--17 years voluntarily completed self-report questionnaires and a structured diagnostic interview. It was hypothesized that (1) chronicity and severity of abuse amplify PTSD risk when a child has limited support networks, ineffective coping, external locus of control, affect dysregulation, and a dysfunctional family; (2) key family and victim characteristics would help to ameliorate effects of traumatic abuse; (3) the combination of precipitating and prophylactic factors would determine the effectiveness of managing traumatic maltreatment. Results suggest that dysthymia, …

Diagnostic Test And Analytical Methods For Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems In Air-Conditioning Units, Qin Liu Jan 2001

Diagnostic Test And Analytical Methods For Resolving Fan/Motor Vibration Problems In Air-Conditioning Units, Qin Liu

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this thesis is to develop test and analysis procedures to revise ASHRAE Standard 87.1 Standard for small (<36 in. diameter) propeller fans. Test and analysis procedures also need to be used to convert AHRAE Standard 87.1 - 1992 test results where the fan hub mobility is zero to corresponding results that will exist with a finite (nonzero) hub mobility; In this project, the vibration modes of a fan with three cambered blades were investigated. Experimental and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was performed on the fan blade and the fan-motor unit. The project compared the results obtained from the FEA and experimental modal analysis of the fan assembly. A very good correlation between FEA and the experimental modal analysis was found.
