The Effects Of Multitasking On Quality Inspection In Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Jose A. Pesante, Robert C. Williges, Jeffrey C. Woldstad Jan 2001

The Effects Of Multitasking On Quality Inspection In Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Jose A. Pesante, Robert C. Williges, Jeffrey C. Woldstad

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Although the industrial quality inspection task has been extensively studied, the effect of multitasking on the performance of the operator in a hybrid inspection system is still unknown. The experiment described in this article compared the quality inspection performance for participants performing a single task, 3 multiple tasks, and 5 multiple tasks. The results of this research indicate that the performance of the operator in the quality inspection task while multitasking in an advanced manufacturing system will be determined by the interaction between the number of different types of defects that can be presented at the same time in the …

Guidelines For Using Process Mapping To Aid Improvement Efforts, Paul Savory, John R. Olson Jan 2001

Guidelines For Using Process Mapping To Aid Improvement Efforts, Paul Savory, John R. Olson

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Process mapping is an easy-to-visualize method for people to analyze and agree on the most efficient routes for reengineering or improving a process. It aids in determining redundant tasks, uncovering hidden interactions between processes and people, and focusing on the processes that serve customers, improve quality, and generate income. This paper presents guidelines for using process mapping as an improvement tool. It is based on the authors’ experiences in aiding a variety of healthcare, service, and manufacturing companies.

Combining Activity-Based Costing With The Simulation Of A Cellular Manufacturing System, Paul Savory, Robert Williams, Rodney Rassmuseun Jan 2001

Combining Activity-Based Costing With The Simulation Of A Cellular Manufacturing System, Paul Savory, Robert Williams, Rodney Rassmuseun

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

This paper presents an integrated simulation and activity-based management approach for determining the best sequencing scheme for processing a part family through a manufacturing cell. The integration is illustrated on a loop or U-shaped manufacturing cell and a part family consisting of four part types (A, B, C, and D). Production requirements for the cell demand that part batches be processed one type at a time. For example, all part A’s are processed until weekly demand is met, then part B’s, etc. The objective of this example is to determine the best part sequence (e.g., ABCD, DCBA or CABD). In …

Combining Activity-Based Costing With The Simulation Of A Cellular Manufacturing System, Paul Savory, Robert Williams, Rodney Rassmuseun

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Discrete-event simulation is one of the most effective techniques for analyzing a manufacturing system. Unfortunately, little attention is given to using simulation models to estimate the economic impact of a proposed system configuration. This paper defines how activity-based costing (ABC) concepts can be incorporated into a discrete-event simulation model. Special emphasis is on demonstrating how decision making can be aided by having the simulation create a detailed “Bill of Activity” describing costs associated with manufacturing a part. The integration of ABC and simulation is illustrated by evaluating the impact of a proposed manufacturing cell configuration. The additional costing information aids …

Polarimetric Processing Of Coherent Random Noise Radar Data For Buried Object Detection, Yi Xu, Ram M. Narayanan, Xiojian Xu, John O. Curtis Jan 2001

Polarimetric Processing Of Coherent Random Noise Radar Data For Buried Object Detection, Yi Xu, Ram M. Narayanan, Xiojian Xu, John O. Curtis

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Random noise polarimetry is a new radar technique for high-resolution probing of subsurface objects and interfaces. The University of Nebraska has developed a polarimetric random noise radar system based on the heterodyne correlation technique. Simulation studies and performance tests on the system confirm its ability to respond to phase differences in the received signals. In addition to polarimetric processing capability and the simplified system design, random noise radar also possesses other desirable features, such as immunity from radio frequency interference (RFI). The paper discusses the theoretical foundations of random noise polarimetry, and presents examples out of the entire data set …

Empirical Tests Of The Fundamental-Value Hypothesis In Land Markets, Angeline M. Lavin, Thomas S. Zorn Jan 2001

Empirical Tests Of The Fundamental-Value Hypothesis In Land Markets, Angeline M. Lavin, Thomas S. Zorn

Department of Finance: Faculty Publications

The land-price boom of the 1970s followed by the bust of the 1980s generated considerable interest in the determination of land prices and the study of whether those prices reflect fundamental value. In this article, three techniques are used to examine the fundamental- value hypothesis in Iowa and Nebraska agricultural land markets. Duration dependence tests indicate that land markets are not affected by rational expectations bubbles. Conversely, Markov chain and time-reversibility tests suggest that land prices depart from fundamental value due to the existence of nonrandom price changes and asymmetric land price patterns. The results of this research should be …

Technology As The Representative Anecdote In Popular Discourses Of Health And Medicine, Lynn M. Harter, Phyllis Japp Jan 2001

Technology As The Representative Anecdote In Popular Discourses Of Health And Medicine, Lynn M. Harter, Phyllis Japp

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

Using a Burkean framework (1969), this article approaches medical dramas as cultural texts to be read for dominant meanings of health and health care. Burke’s representative anecdote illuminates the melding of science, technology, and healing in popular discourses of health, establishing technological intervention as the norm and marginalizing nontechnological (i.e., alternative) forms of health care. Popular entertainment reinforces this anecdote in narratives of healing as technological competence triumphing over nature.

Finding The Meanings Of College Drinking: An Analysis Of Fraternity Drinking Stories, Thomas Workman Jan 2001

Finding The Meanings Of College Drinking: An Analysis Of Fraternity Drinking Stories, Thomas Workman

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

College drinking has traditionally been studied from a public health perspective that attempts to quantify behavior as a means toward description, explanation, and intervention. This article offers a critical and cultural approach to understanding the meanings and functions of high-risk drinking and the ways in which those meanings are reproduced within the culture. Data were collected via an ethnographic study of fraternity members at a large midwestern university to explore the communication of excessive drinking norms. Viewed from various narrative and structural theories, the study examines collected drinking stories as a source for analyzing the construction of meanings surrounding drunkenness …

Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki Jan 2001

Optimization Of Orthogonal Polyphase Spreading Sequences For Wireless Data Applications, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)

In this paper, we propose a simple but efficient method for optimizing correlation properties of polyphase spreading sequences for asynchronous DS CDMA applications. The proposed method can be used to minimize the mean square value of aperiodic crosscorrelation or the mean square value of aperiodic autocorrelation, the maximum value of aperiodic crosscorrelation functions, merit factor or other properties of the sequence set. The important feature of the method is that when applied to orthogonal sequences, it modifies correlation properties of the sequence set, while preserves their orthogonality for perfect synchronization.

Wyclif And Lollardy, Stephen E. Lahey Jan 2001

Wyclif And Lollardy, Stephen E. Lahey

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

John Wyclif’s place in the history of Christian ideas varies according to the historian’s interest. As scholastic theology, Wyclif’s thought appears an heretical epilogue to the glories of the systematic innovations of the thirteenth century. Historians of the Protestantism, on the other hand, characterize him as a pioneer, the “Morning Star of the Reformation,” acknowledging his theology and the Lollard and Hussite movements associated with it as forerunners of sixteenth-century change. It has been difficult to understand Wyclif as a man of his age because the late fourteenth century itself is easily viewed as a period of transition from “Late …

Spellbinding Performance: Poet As Witch In Theocritus' Second Idyll And Apollonius' Argonautica, Anne Duncan Jan 2001

Spellbinding Performance: Poet As Witch In Theocritus' Second Idyll And Apollonius' Argonautica, Anne Duncan

Department of Classics and Religious Studies: Faculty Publications

The connection between poetry and enchantment in Greek literature is by now a familiar subject. The poet enchants (θέλει) his audience as a magician chants a spell or administers a drug, causing pleasure and the forgetfulness of pain in the listener. As with most other poetic topoi, this one goes back to Homer, to figures like Circe, the Sirens, and even Helen. In this paper, I will argue that two witches from Hellenistic poems should be regarded as poet-figures: Simaetha in Theocritus' Idyll 2, and Medea in Apollonius' Argonautica. Theocritus and Apollonius use the performing female voice of the witch …

Adaptive Segmentation Of Document Images, Don Sylwester, Sharad C. Seth Jan 2001

Adaptive Segmentation Of Document Images, Don Sylwester, Sharad C. Seth

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

A single-parameter text-line extraction algorithm is described along with an efficient technique for estimating the optimal value for the parameter for individual images without need for ground truth. The algorithm is based on three simple tree operations, cut, glue and flip. An XY-tree representing the segmentation is incrementally transformed to reflect a change in the parameter while intrinsic measures of the cost of the transformation are used to detect when specific tree operations would cause an error if they were performed, allowing these errors to be avoided. The algorithm correctly identified 98.8% of the area of the ground truth bounding …

Learning Styles: Teaching Technology Subjects Can Be More Effective, Ronald I. Sutliff, Virginia A. Baldwin Jan 2001

Learning Styles: Teaching Technology Subjects Can Be More Effective, Ronald I. Sutliff, Virginia A. Baldwin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

Learning style theory has been developed and applied in various curricula for all levels of education. Kolb (1985) developed one particular method of assessing student learning style. The use of this method has been documented in the engineering and technology programs of several universities. Variations in learning style due to cultural diversity have been studied and are described in the literature.

This article describes and recommends the use of learning style theory to assess individual learning styles in the classroom and the use of teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles. Sutliff (one of the authors) administered the Learning Style …

Review Of Gregor Wittkop: Hölderlins Nürtingen: Lebenswelt Und Literarischer Entwurf, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Jan 2001

Review Of Gregor Wittkop: Hölderlins Nürtingen: Lebenswelt Und Literarischer Entwurf, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Gregor Wittkop, a name familiar to Hölderlin scholars following his 1993 publication of documents relating to Hölderlin‘s Tarmzeit (Hölderlin. Der Pflegsohn. Texte und Dokumente 1806—1843 mit den neu entdeckten Nürtinger Pflegschaftsakten), has combined archival research with literary interpretation to present in his newest study a nuanced view of Hölderlin‘s Nürtingen. The study consists of two parts: the first deals with Hölderlin‘s biography and his relationships with family members throughout his life, the second discusses a number of the poet‘s writings whose thematic center is «home» in both a biographical and idealized sense. Wittkop‘s familiarity with the social and legal …

Mitochondrial Phylogeography, Subspecific Taxonomy, And Conservation Genetics Of Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis; Aves: Gruidae), Judith M. Rhymer, Matthew G. Fain, Jane E. Austin, Douglas H. Johnson, Carey Krajewski Jan 2001

Mitochondrial Phylogeography, Subspecific Taxonomy, And Conservation Genetics Of Sandhill Cranes (Grus Canadensis; Aves: Gruidae), Judith M. Rhymer, Matthew G. Fain, Jane E. Austin, Douglas H. Johnson, Carey Krajewski

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Six subspecies of sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) have been denoted based on perceived morphological and/or breeding locality differences among them. Three subspecies are migratory, breeding from the high arctic in North America and Siberia (lesser sandhill, G. c. canadensis), south through central Canada (Canadian sandhill, G. c. rowani) and into the northern United States (greater sandhill, G. c. tabida). A review of sandhill crane taxonomy indicates that the size variation, on the basis of which these subspecies were named, may be clinal and not diagnostic. The other three subspecies, all listed as endangered or threatened, …

Use Of Macroinvertebrates To Identify Cultivated Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson Jan 2001

Use Of Macroinvertebrates To Identify Cultivated Wetlands In The Prairie Pothole Region, Ned H. Euliss Jr., David M. Mushet, Douglas H. Johnson

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

We evaluated the use of macroinvertebrates as a potential tool to identify dry and intensively farmed temporary and seasonal wetlands in the Prairie Pothole Region. The techniques we designed and evaluated used the dried remains of invertebrates or their egg banks in soils as indicators of wetlands. For both the dried remains of invertebrates and their egg banks, we weighted each taxon according to its affinity for wetlands or uplands. Our study clearly demonstrated that shells, exoskeletons, head capsules, eggs, and other remains of macroinvertebrates can be used to identify wetlands, even when they are dry, intensively farmed, and difficult …

Human Herpesvirus 8 Can Be Transmitted Through Blood In Drug Addicts, Carlos Sosa, Jorge Benetucci, Colleen Hanna, Laura Sieczkowski, Gabriel Deluchi, Ana Maria Canizal, Hamakwa Mantina, Winslow Klaskala, Marianna Baum, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Human Herpes virus type-8 (HHV-8) seroprevalence was studied in a population of HIV positive intravenous drug users (IVDUs) from Argentina. Analysis of this population also indirectly made it possible to study HHV-8 blood transmission, because these individuals frequently engage in needle sharing behavior and are capable of acquiring a broad array of blood borne pathogens, including Hepatitis B/C virus. The seroprevalence of HHV-8 in IVDUs was compared to a group of non-IVDUs and HIV negative individuals. Of the 223 individuals tested, 13.45% were HHV-8 positive, 16.99% in the IVDUs group, and 5.71% in the non-IVDUs. Among HIV positive IVDUs, 25/144 …

Implementation Of The Biological Opinion For The Missouri River Main Stem System, Missouri River Bank Stabilization And Navigation Project, And Kansas River Reservoir System

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) requires that the Corps of Engineers (Corps), in coordination with the appropriate resources agency, will ensure that any action authorized, funded, or carried out is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of any federally listed threatened or endangered species or result in the destruction or adverse modification of critical habitat. Formal consultation between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Corps under Section 7 of the ESA culminated with the "Biological Opinion on the Operation of the Missouri River Main Stem System, Operation and Maintenance of the Missouri River Bank Stabilization and …

Duck Populations As Indicators Of Landscape Condition In The Prairie Pothole Region, Jane Austin, Thomas K. Buhl, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Wayne Norling, H. Thomas Sklebar

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

The Prairie Pothole Region of the northern Great Plains is an important region for waterfowl production because of the abundance of shallow wetlands. The ecological significance of the region and impacts from intensive agriculture prompted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to select it as one of the first areas for developing and evaluating ecological indicators of wetland condition. We examined hypothesized relations between indicators of landscape and wetland conditions and waterfowl abundance on 45 40 km2 study sites in North Dakota for 1995–1996. Landscape condition was defined a priori as the ratio of cropland area to total upland area …

Evaluation Of The Bird Conservation Area Concept In The Northern Tallgrass Prairie: Annual Report 2001, Maiken Winter, Douglas H. Johnson, Jill A. Dechant, Therese M. Donovan, W. Daniel Svedarsky

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

In 1998 we initiated a test of the concept that Bird Conservation Areas (BCA's) can maintain populations of breeding grassland birds. The underlying hypothesis is that large core areas of quality habitat (such as native prairie) that are surrounded by neutral habitats (such as small-grain fields), and that are isolated from hostile habitats (such as woody vegetation) will result in avian densities and reproductive rates sufficient to at least maintain population levels of breeding birds. This concept was proposed by the Midwest Working Group of Partners In Flight (e.g., Pashley and Fitzgerald 1996) and endorsed also by the Prairie Pothole …

Fluvial Processes And Passive Rehabilitation Of The Lisbon Bottom Side-Channel Chute, Lower Missouri River, Robert B. Jacobson, Mark S. Laustrup, Michael D. Chapman

United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District

Multiple large floods in 1993-1997 on the Lower Missouri River carved a side-channel chute through the river bottom at Lisbon, Missouri. Although similar in some respects to engineered side-channel chutes designed for habitat rehabilitation projects, the Lisbon Bottom chute has been unique in that it was allowed to evolve for more than four years with minimal stabilization. During the wet years, 1996-1999, the chute was subjected to abnormally high discharges and passed as much as 20% of the total discharge of the Missouri River. Relatively unrestrained fluvial processes during this time created a wide channel with highly diverse habitats. The …

Estimated Areal Extent Of Colonies Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs In The Northern Great Plains, John Sidle, Douglas Johnson, Betty Euliss

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

During 1997-1998, we undertook an aerial survey, with an aerial line-intercept technique, to estimate the extent of colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) in the northern Great Plains states of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. We stratified the survey based on knowledge of colony locations, computed 2 types of estimates for each stratum, and combined ratio estimates for high-density strata with average density estimates for low-density strata. Estimates of colony areas for black-tailed prairie dogs were derived from the average percentages of lines intercepting prairie dog colonies and ratio estimators. We selected the best estimator …
